It's easy connect and process a lot of data in one platform. Use files, FTP, TCP, REST, etc... to connect IN/OUT and process information. Send to other platform even it is in other language. All problems wiht HL7 are solved It is possible create an integration solution in few weeks, therefore the time of development is very low.
Need a lot of time to understand the language, knows the methods, etc.. the learning curve is a bit high

Very flexible, fast and strong. ORIENTED OBJECT-based. Supports most platforms - use and access to databases. Support HTTP REQUEST / REST and WS / SOAP. TLS / SSL included. Logs viewing options. Powerful debugger.
A bit complex but allows perfect integration. It is useful to know CACHE (Intersystems) programming language , but not mandatory.

Overall I am happy to use this product in my current role.
We use in our BAU day to day development, Monitoring and support for the HL7 messaging for healthcare integration using Intersystems IRIS components Studio, Management Portal, DTLs and Object Scripting.
I feel all key components are in part of IRIS product but I feel still have some documents conversion (rtf) file content base 64 not handling directly in IRIS. We need to rely on third party software.

Integration of all patient records with diagnostic systems resulting in efficiency gains
Ease of use, coupled with bespoke training package as part of purchase price. Out of the box HL7 plug ins for most market leadimg diagnosis software.
No meaningful cloud based offering meaning high capital entry cost setting up infrastructure

I used Ensemble in healthcare projects to connect and process informations regarding master patients records, and connecting departmental data to central index in a Master Patient Index pattern application.
The close integration between DB (Cache), integration server (Ensemble) and the development environment made me reach a very high productivity, specially if using the graphical BPM tools. The web interface is really impressive and permits to manage all the stages from dev to prod deployment to monitoring to data archiving.
The IDE was available only for Windows, but since 2016 this limitation is gone, as there is an eclipse plugin, and so is available anywhere java can run.
