With construction accounting, there are unique situations that make QuickBooks less desirable to use. This program allows for work-in-process tracking and job costing better than average accounting software.
It's specialized for the construction industry
It doesn't integrate with QuickBooks if you do a conversion

Job costing
This product is great for Job cost analysis. Product allows you to get detailed information on each job/project if set up correctly.
Compared to Quickbooks this product is not user friendly. Standard reports are not built in. We spent alot of time and money to create standard reports that Quickbooks offers for free.

The software makes accounting for the construction industry very easy. We converted from QuickBooks, and there is a world of difference in what Sage 100 allows you to do vs QuickBooks.
The report writer is not especially easy to use. It could be more user-friendly to those who don't have much of a computer programing background.

Very glad we changed from Quickbooks to this program
Sage 100 ties your whole business together nicely in one product. Information on the areas of your business is at your fingertips
When trying to make some changes to information put into the program is often hard to do or cannot be done at all.

We use the product for project management, contacts and estimating. It is very robust and we have not yet found any limitation to what we wanted the product to do. The team workers have accepted the product after a relatively short training period. The web-based delivery makes the maintenance and update very smooth.
breadth of features accessible pricing for a mid sized construction business Microsoft products and QuickBooks integration
because of the breadth of functionality it takes some time to assimilate, specifically for estimators new to online estimating tools

I want to go back to quickbooks but it also can't do what we need.
It can do progress billing, but I think pretty much every software out there does and also most customers make me bill in their portal anyways.
Because the users are so expensive and it is so user unfriendly, I enter everything that happens into this software. Have to go into every recurring invoice and put the month. (ie for the month of "august" such a pain. why can't it use a code or something. I bill on the first of every single month. for 15 years. Nobody else will learn it so they do change orders in word (no calculations) so the #'s get all messed up. We have a manual PO log because it doesn't (really) track PO's. It says it can bank rec but that has never worked.

I found it to be user friendly and very easy to work with. It is also similar to QuickBooks but a bit more complex than QuickBooks and has more functionality that an accountant would use. Enough for small to large companies.

It has been used for our payroll for sometime and does the job. Don't see alot of customer support from Sage so far for this product. It may be a product they are chosing to phase out since it is older technology.
since it is a licensed platform it is on my desktop and ready to use.
the reporting set ups are cumbersome. When you need to update the software, it won't work again until every license is updated here. It can be slow as well.

Great for a construction company that has basic needs above quickbooks but isn't ready to spend a lot of money
The software is pretty straight forward, not super complicated to deal with. As a smaller specialty subcontractor we used this and it did a great job helping us keep track of jobs, accounting, and payroll, while being able to still keep certain departmental costs split up to ensure profitability. The reporting was decently robust as well.
The software feels old and not up to par with current technologies. The database is a flat file (foxpro I believe) and although you can get data out of it via odbc connections, it leaves a lot to be desired vs a SQL database.

I am able to perform all phases of accounting and generate real time reports for the owner.
I have been working with the software for over 25 years and the fact that everything is integrated helps to run a drywall company much easier.
Performing the annual updates to both the server and each desktop has always been a challenge.

I don't use the construction-specific components of this software (e.g. Job Costing) and, therefore, what's left is a very basic system which omits standard functionality found in other systems. In addition to the above, we have multiple databases setup which do not talk to each other, requiring key tables like vendor lists to be maintained in multiple places. This may be the result of bad advice from our consultant, but since they're supposed to be Sage experts, I think that reflects poorly on Sage as well.
The Sage Desktop makes it easy to maneuver in the software. It's fairly easy to import and export data.
Need separate software to print checks (not native to Sage). Not able to drill-down in reports. Difficulty with handling multiple users - when one user is viewing a report on screen, other users cannot login. Future period balance sheets which cross a fiscal year are difficult to create because of how retained earnings is posted. Unable to tell the current period when entering report parameters.
Thank you for your feedback! We appreciate your business and look forward to helping drive your continued success in construction and real estate.

Overall it is the best we could find for job costing, payroll, and GL. We could never go backwards, say to Quickbooks.
Job Costing functions are great. Integration with GL is great. Payroll is smooth and easy to use. The service module works well for our paint department.
Lack of "additional features". We use a 3rd party timekeeping app. It is a silly waste of time to have to do this. Sage should easily be able to develop their own timekeeping app that does what Clock Shark does. Along with timekeeping would be a way to schedule your people to jobs. Also, I could see a total rewrite to a html/cloud base version.

It is good, but it would be beneficial to the user to have a more in-depth accounting purpose such as quickbooks would.
The ability to work across different projects and have everything flow through to the proper financial levels.
I am not a fan of having to void incorrect transactions rather than simply correcting them. If something is not in a closed period, it should be able to be easily adjusted. The bank rec feature is not very user friendly. I can easily see non accounting professionals mess this up. The reporting functions are not that great...

Our company has been using Sage 300 Construction and Real Estate since 2000. We like that the different applications work so well together and cover the needs of our business for Job Cost, Accounts Payable, Cash Management, Payroll, Inventory, Purchasing, Billing and Accounts Receivable, and General Ledger. There are other applications such as Estimating, Equipment, Contracts, Document Management,...
We really like Report Designer which allows us to modify the "canned reports" or create our own reports in a format we'd like to see.
It's expensive to purchase, but over the long run, it's been worth it. Not crazy about Desktop.

We moved from Quickbooks to Sage 100 Contractor. The job reporting, job costing, and percentage of completion accounting was key to our move.
Job data, inventory and vendor data are all tied together so you can run job cost reports and drill into the data easily.
At the moment - limited abilities to push/pull data through API's. Payroll works well - but the one timekeeping system that has API's into Sage 100 Contractor did not work for us.

I came in right after they had gone live with Sage, I see things that should have been done differently, but now it's too late.
I do like that you have more lock down control than you do with Quickbooks. I also like that there are several ways to get to something.
The reports need serious improvement, and that you can't have more than one address for a vendor. I also don't like that the attachments link can be broken so easily. We got a new server and moved everything over, but it broke the links to the attachment data. Also, we purchased Sage because we were told Procore would link to everything, well, here we are 2 years later and we still cannot push invoices from Procore to Sage 100. The ability to correct some issues are difficult if not impossible.
Thank you for your feedback! We appreciate your business and look forward to helping drive your continued success in construction and real estate.

I like the vendor's customer service commitment; I like that they're a phone call away. I like Sage 100 Contractor because, in comparison to QuickBooks Contractor, it's a data manager of massive proportions. I never thought I'd see the day that our little company would outgrow QuickBooks, but I'm incredibly grateful for the ease of transition and the amazing intuitive forces built within Sage 100.
It takes a bit of a learning curve to adjust after so many years of a simplistic accounting system (QB), but it's well worth it for the data results we receive and the amount of time, talent, and energy saved.

I like being able to do accounting data entry for all of our companies using one screen. Unlike QuickBooks, I don't need to close down the application for each company.
AP and Billing modules don't link. I create internal billing for our sister companies using Quick Bill and then have to manually enter into AP for each company.

I would highly recommend this software for any large sized (5 million and above) construction business. It tracks your fixed assets, as well has a variety of other strong accounting functions.
This isn't exactly the most user friendly software, and alot of the times it will be people switching from Quickbooks to this software. It may have a steep learning curve.

It's been many years of working through the quirks and intracacies of Sage, but I love what the software gives, as far as detailed, comprehensive, historical data for all types of jobs.
I love being able to enter information in once and have that info available throughout the various modules.
I'd prefer to access the software in a more stable, user-friendly way than via Microsoft Remote Desktop (which is currently used).

Sage is organized in a smart way that makes sense. Things are not generally buried somewhere, or organized in a way that you can accidentally enter things in multiple places (a nightmare I experienced repeatedly with Quickbooks). There are clear rules that follow basic accounting principles and tremendous resources for project management and business planning. It also has a lot of flexibility for customizing. The support services are unprecedented.
It leaves good audit trail for everything you do. As a bookkeeper this is invaluable for reconciling (unlike Quickbooks). Versatility in Job reports and tracking so much data for making smart business decisions.
It takes a long time to become truly proficient and is not designed for people without strong accounting abilities and knowledge. Some features are not intuitive. If you need custom reports you either need to take extensive classes or pay an expert (time consuming for the first and expensive for the second).

We have more than a year maybe of using this software. Report-generation is good, you just need to know the proper words or keywords related to the report you need in order to generate it since it was categorized in an orderly manner. Generating tax report has never been so satisfying except that the version we used did not show the total taxable amount, non-taxable amount too, just the tax due. But overall, the software is nice and very professional.
It caters to large company with inventories. Works best with companies in construction as well.
The updates are somewhat not gratifying. You need to upgrade into the latest upgrade in case you miss a feature or two if you are using a 4-year old QBD Pro software installed in your desktop.

I'm pleased overall with our purchase thus far.
The amount of detail that can be entered into the software as it relates to construction accounting.
The aesthetics of the interface design seem a little dated. It seems like it would make it a little more enjoyable to have a more contemporary-edgy design. Accounting is a pretty dry topic to begin with. Therefore, having a more fun and contemporary design could potentially make the accounting experience a little less dry.

Very positive. I have considered moving to Sage but I get on so well with Quickbooks that I will continue to use Quickbooks.
I find Quickbooks easy to use and mainly taught myself how to use it, with a little help. I use many types of software for our school so having something that is intuitive and not complicated is important to me.
I currently use an older one-time software purchase of Quickbooks. To buy the latest software is quite expensive. Purchasing a monthly subscription is an option but given many software have gone in that direction, it can all add up in monthly or annual fees

in general, love QuickBooks, but for a contractor in the construction industry, this was not a great fit.
Very easy to input data and keep things organized. Was nice to be notified when permits or certificates expired. Very user-friendly for the payroll duties.
This software requires a lot of double data entry which takes up a lot of time. This worked when we were under 25 employees great. Once we were above that we needed to upgrade. also, with the upgrades, we usually lost our security settings for each user, opening up the ability for people to possibly view things like payroll- that was a real set back
