Metrics for software engineering management

GitPrime overview

GitPrime is a productivity analytics solution for software development teams which analyzes data from Git-based code repositories, including GitHub, GitLab, and BitBucket, to measure team productivity, understand individual work patterns, identify areas for improvement, and more.

GitPrime highlights each engineer’s recent work patterns, giving users an at-a-glance view of individual working practices and contributions compared to team averages. Each engineer’s commit risk can also be viewed, and work focuses are also visualized on graphs alongside team averages, covering new work, legacy refactoring, helping others, and code churn, giving users insight into how much work goes into dealing with technical debt and how much is immediately overwritten. Feedback aimed at specific areas requiring improvement is presented to users to be passed on to engineers. A global view of daily progress enables users to track progress made by all engineers across all repositories in a single view.

GitPrime allows users to map any significant organizational events against team productivity, to show the impact of events such as team growth, requirements revisions, and process changes on the average number of commits per engineer, codebase impact, or other productivity metrics. Users can also view a leaderboard which ranks engineers using a score calculated across 5 metrics, including efficiency, impact, commits per day, and tt100 productive (the amount of time required to contribute 100 lines of code, after churn). GitPrime can also deliver daily or weekly digest emails, which include details of daily or weekly impact, work focus, repository focus, pull requests, contributors ranked by impact, and more.

Increases my ability to make confident performance decisions. A must have to data driven teams.

Data. Period. Data that I can use to operate my teams.GitPrime increases my ability to make confident decisions about performance, and it allows me to do so much more quickly. I no longer have to rely on larger more abstract mechanisms or my gut only, now I can validate or invalidate it with data. The ability to drive after goals using team based data and/or individual based data allows me to customize how I want to use it across my teams. I also love how it easily and readily gives me coaching opportunities to take to a 1:1 with a team member.

Data and metrics on engineering team performance that aid in efforts to ramp up, develop, and retain engineering talent.GitPrime peels back the curtain and exposes a wealth of metrics around the productivity and behavior of your engineering team. This allows everything from getting a great 10,000 ft view to diving into a specific team member. We've effectively used the tool to evaluate the impact (or lack of impact) of process/cultural changes, check in on team member performance and evaluate how new team members onboard and ramp up.

Fantastic tool for understanding you developer team's work

At my previous startup we were early users of GitPrime and it's fantastic to watch this product evolve. Although we were only a small team of 2-3, we got a lot of value from GitPrime's stats and analysis. It really helped us to see where we were spending our time and assess the effects some of our decisions had on our code base. We found it to be great for management and for personal development and analysis of our work patterns. The team at GitPrime were always super responsive to any feedback we had and even sought to understand how some of the product colours looked to me being colour blind..

Great tool for highlighting best engineering practices and setting goals on getting there.

Although expensive for small groups, fact-based conversations that result in better engineering is worth a lot.It is all about focus. Choosing just 3 metrics to track (there's hundreds) fosters conversations focused on fixing work processes and doing the right things. It is hard to argue with facts. After a few cycles, select 3 new metrics. Take gitprime up on data walkthroughs, really helps navigate through the metrics.

Benefits

Recent work patterns for each engineer are presented in an at-a-glance view, with specific feedback on areas requiring improvement.

Organizational events, such as team growth, process changes, and late-stage requirements revisions can be mapped on to charts and graphs to visualize how these events affect team productivity.

A global view of daily progress allows users to track progress across all repositories, as work moves through the development pipeline.

Digest emails are sent out on a daily or weekly basis, keeping users informed of work focus, daily/weekly impact, pull requests, most notable commits, and more.
