QlikView and Qlik Sense

2015-06-23

Pros

QlikView's unique in-memory, associative data engine makes it possible for an organization to gain insight quickly from vast amount of data. QlikView is trend setter in the business discovery space and a leader in the Gartner's magic quadrant for business discovery tools.

Cons

QlikView's visualization capabilities are not as strong as one offered by Tableau but Qlik Tech is addressing that with a new product -- Qlik Sense. It has yet to be seen how QlikView and Qlik Sense will work as a suite.

Recommendations to others considering QlikView

Analyze the business need for adopting a business intelligence tool. If you have need to analyze vast amount of data quickly from various sources, QlikView may be a good fit. But if you are looking for a tool to produce standard reports, it may not be the best choice.

Somewhat clunky but overall it gets the job done

2017-07-11

Pros

It also has a lot of customization options that are not currently offered in Qlik Sense.

Cons

This product requires a lot of SQL knowledge which can lead to high costs employing someone with a SQL background or using a consultant.

Qlik products are powerful and flexible, great ROI.

2019-04-11

Remembering that this is a platform, not just a BI tool, there is some back-office IT work required to implement, launch and maintain the software. Once up and running (which was very cost effective to outsource) the maintenance costs were minimal and we never had any problems.

Pros

Everything. This is a well engineered and powerfully designed tool that dominates the ETL and BI Visualization space for those that need both aspects combined into one. A decade of fine tuning make this a great tool for your analytical and data management toolbox.

Cons

The only con here is the cannibalization factor in the release of Qlik Sense, a far better and more modern take on the same tool.

Like it’s little brother Qlik Sense, this program works well.

2018-11-23

We had decided to switch to the much-cheaper Qlik Sense but still occasionally use QlikView for the customers we already had in the system.

Pros

While this program takes some time to get used to, once you learn it, it’s a breeze. The ability to manipulate data to make it just as you want is a major plus. Many other programs restrict your ability to show your data in just the way that you want.

Cons

They did listen and thus created Qlik Sense, but at the higher price point, you would expect this program to have the same features as its competitors, but alas, it is still lacking.

A great reporting or dwh software

2018-02-02

Integration data and reporting with pixel perfect results.

Pros

Excellent pixel perfect software (unlike Qlik Sense) allows you to create dashboards and advanced reports, the platform is complete and allows you to read data from multiple data sources, the tools provided are the classic tools of reporting software and allows you to customize to the maximum your needs.

Cons

Unlike Qlik Sense it is less optimized for data discovery but it is an excellent software able to create reports and also to populate (using data in memory) a kind of DWH or better internal Datamart containing the data loaded in the file.

Qlik Sense provides excellent self-service BI tools with solid expansion capabilities

2017-08-25

We still use QlikView for most of our BI projects because the centralized model has merit.

Pros

Qlik Sense allows me to provide users with a library of BI objects (key indicators, trending charts, and other objects) based on a common data set. Users can choose to view simple dashboards or create complex analyses to support their own projects.

Cons

Some of the implementation and maintenance is still cumbersome, and I would prefer a greater capacity to centralize some areas of the published Qlik library in my organization.

Qlik Sense

2018-01-06

Qlik is a leader in guided and self-service analytics tools.

Pros

The best of class business discovery software in the market. It's ability to handle large volume of data APIs that can extend its capabilities

Cons

Qlik Sense still lacks some functionalities and features that are so useful in QlikView. For example, Alternate States and AND-mode.

A work in progress, though it will get you there!

2018-07-31

Though it really has its place in the market for simpler deployments, do take care when planning bigger or complex deployments as the servicability of such a deployment is difficult and tricky (but doable).

Pros

-Qlik code is easy, Qlikview-code is easy reusable -InMemory works!

Cons

-Visualisation not on par with 'the other big-ones'. No proper customisation, and a lot of basic visualisations are not available (Band chart, Radar chart, Combi-plot). -No analitics/statistiscs toolkit. -Presenting data/apps takes forever in a citrix-environment. -Developing a set of dashboards/apps in Sense feels clumsy and messy. There is no hierarchy, keeping track of sequential apps.(Extract/Translate/Presentation) is quite a thing. Think debugging... -No check-in/check-out tooling, no folderstructures for unpublished apps but a cluttered personal workspace so a lot of discipline and creative thinking is needed. -Building a corporate environment in Sense feels actually quite 'dirty'.

Worthy successor to Qlikview

2018-10-09

Visually much more slick that Qlikview, and the screen layout is much more dynamic and intelligent.

Ironically the intelligent layout system that I like so much does limit the amount of visualisations that can fit on a particular screen.

2016-10-02

At the beginning QlikView and now their new product QlikSense as well.

Pros

Easy to use. Personal Edition is free - it's good for evaluating and testing product for different areas (even for personal needs like getting overview about physical activities or personal finance etc.)

Cons

Some powerful functions are missing comparing with QlikView but fortunately the product develops so quickly that I'm not worrying about that quite much :-).

Not as great as others, but still mighty.

2018-11-23

The price isn’t bad for this program, however, it’s not quite as feature-rich as it’s competitors. It’s very user-friendly and has a ton of support online, which many of its competitors do not, so there’s that.

Pros

As we have used and very much liked QlikView, we had to try this and were certainly not disappointed.

Cons

That being said, Qlik Sense isn’t like the “big boys.” It’s almost there, but not quite. The visualization objects are not as varied as we would have liked, especially when it doesn’t support third-party visualizations. This seems like it should be a standard feature.

Qlik Sense: Simple and Powerful

2017-05-18

Qlik Sense is in its early stage of industry exposure. It's an advanced BI tool which makes everyone capable of becoming a data intelligence developer. This tool is getting better in each of its updates. This is the future of Business Intelligence.

Pros

* Ability to migrate applications from QlikView. * Design and Security features

Cons

* Visualisation objects needs to be upgraded so it can match with the predecessor's performance. * So many functionalities are not available in Qlik sense which was available in Qlik View. * Customization of visual objects are limited.

The perfect software for data analysis and interactive data visualization

2018-02-08

I can easily handle big sources of data and deeply analyze them with small efforts.

Pros

It's intuitive and dynamic, I can load the data from many different inputs and analyze with the large set of tools that QlikSense has. It can also handle huge amount of data with ease, and this is a big plus compared to other solutions.

Cons

It sometimes lacks some features that are available in QlikView, which is probably more complete.

Great for Self Service Analysis

2016-10-12

I like Qlik Sense a lot because it has the power of the Qlikview Engine but with the possibility to start a dashboard just with a simple drag and drop for non technical users and it has a variety of charts or object out of the box that you could use to facilitate this, definetely a good self service BI tool.

Pros

Powerful for heavy backend processes or ETL in general, no matter how the data is you can always transform it to build a good data model

Cons

The canvas of work could be better, is strange at the begining on how the charts allign and change depending of the size of the object you are using, a smaller grid would be better.

Data analytics for the masses

2017-10-12

Qlik Sense is not QlikView. For those of us who have been working with both might seem like the next iteration of the latter.

Pros

Proven in-memory engine and robust data extraction language. Drag and drop user interface, responsive, ready to create, not just consume, from mobile devices like tablets. Overall performance and very complete integration with web technologies. Open sourced libraries. Fine-grained user access engine.

Cons

Applications are limited to the power of one single computer, although several computers (nodes) can be clustered, they act, at the end, individually (i.e.: not adding up resources from all the servers available). As of version 3.2 lacks a full governance tool and a central library across applications, so what is created for one can be reused in another. Built-in objects are basic, leaving more advanced visualizations to extensions or development of some kind, usually far from the advanced user knowledge (e.g.: widgets).

Top notch scalable self-service BI tool with cutting-edge visuals

2015-12-05

Pros

Qlik Sense is a self-service analytical tool based on the same in-memory technology as QlikView. It's associative engine allows for snappy selections, filtering and prompt re-calculation of all charts and aggregations on the fly as the user navigates throughout the dashboard, even on datasets of over 100 million rows.

Cons

It's almost impossible to get comprehensive extract of it's underlying data, something that was possible with QlikView (Export functionality e.g.) 5.

Recommendations to others considering Qlik Sense

If you need to do aggregations on the fly (Rankings, Ratios e.g.) in your dashboards on a large amount of data, Qlik is your only option. The technology used in Qlik Sense is very advanced (better than Tableau in my opinion) but not mature yet. Do not use Qlik Sense if your prime requirement is to create standardised reports and to have a platform where users can extract data to use in Excel. Qlik Sense is enterprise ready and very compatible with cloud deployments. Installation is extremely easy. Architecture of security settings requires a bit of a learning curve. If you plan to incorporate your own bespoke and customised visualisations and extensions, hiring an JavaScript developer is highly recommended.
