SimilarWeb PRO is a cloud-based data analytics solution that analyzes competitor and industry traffic stats that are crucial for companies to understand the competition and the market's dynamics, craft effective marketing campaigns, and identify untapped opportunities to further grow their businesses. SimilarWeb PRO allows you to: benchmark yourself against competitors; create competitive analysis reports for websites, industries or mobile apps; improve your SEO and PPC campaigns; obtain valuable insights for your M&A (merger and acquisition) strategy; get back your Google Analytics “not provided” and “not set” keywords; generate engaging content for your website, identify your website's most valuable pages for better conversion; and discover which ad networks and banners your competitors are using.
To ensure data accuracy and quality, SimilarWeb uses data that’s collected globally, across multiple devices, from thousands of sources, including ISPs (Internet service providers), clickstream, and the SimilarWeb crawler, which is then compared to a learning set comprised of millions of websites that are directly measured. Data can be viewed daily, weekly, monthly, or for a specific time period. SimilarWeb PRO combines web and mobile apps analysis in one platform, but depending on your digital marketing needs, i.e., you’re a mobile app developer and web app traffic data is an added expense you don’t actually need, separate plans for web and mobile are available.
Some of SimilarWeb PRO’s main features are competitor traffic, traffic share per channel, popular pages, custom date, and keyword analysis.
Modern-day marketing is, to a great extent, a data-driven process. Needless to say, without the right data analytics tool, marketing professionals are left groping in the dark, blindly figuring out how to outrank the competition or maximize their marketing dollars through the creation of more potent marketing campaigns. In a nutshell, SimilarWeb is like Google Analytics but with a far greater reach, in that the analytics it provides isn’t limited to just the sites the user owns or manages.
It covers a wide spectrum of industries and a whole suite of traffic data that allows users to pick the perfect sites for ad placement, therefore, increasing their media buy ROI. It analyzes competitor data by comparing up to five competing websites at a time, shows campaign landing and conversion funnel pages, organic and paid traffic sources, referral sites, industry leaders, and geographic distribution. Data can go back as far as 25 months, and all data tables, charts or graphs can be exported as Excel or PNG files.
On the mobile application side, aside from in-store traffic from both the Apple App and Google Play stores, SimilarWeb’s App Analysis feature shows out-store traffic, which breaks down the different channels driving traffic to the app outside of the app store, the traffic share of each keyword, and application/publisher traffic share per keyword. Keywords are based on actual user search terms.
To stay on top of the competition, you have to know what they’re doing. After all, “keep your friends close and your enemies closer” is an adage that applies not just to real-life friends and enemies. SimilarWeb PRO allows users to analyze up to five competing websites at any given time, and provides traffic data that includes desktop and mobile visits, visit duration, pages per visit, and bounce rate. Data timeframe is set at a default of six months and can be customized to up to 25 months.
Global, country and category ranks are also shown, as are traffic engagement metrics such as average daily visits and average visit duration. Traffic per country for each site is given, including traffic sources that are broken down into direct URL, email, referring websites, search, social media, and display ads. For search and social sources, SimilarWeb provides organic versus paid traffic figures, and for display advertising, it shows the ad networks and publishers with the most traffic share.
For mobile apps, competitor performance analysis usually begins via the Ranking and Ratings page where an app’s ranking in, say, the Google Play store, is shown over a certain period of time. Comparisons per country can also be made. The In-Store Traffic page shows you how your competitor’s app was found by users from within Google Play, such as the featured section, top charts and referring apps. The External Traffic page provides an overview into how the app fares in terms of search, referrals, social traffic, and display advertising.
There are a myriad ways to market a business online, and SimilarWeb shows which ones are effective and which ones need to be revisited. Armed with concrete traffic data per channel (direct, mail, referrals, search, social and display ads), marketers are able to clearly and objectively pinpoint their traffic strengths and areas for improvement. Let’s say your competition is ahead of you in terms of search. Boosting your SEO and other content marketing efforts is then a path worth considering.
Social and display ads data offers insight into which social media and advertising platforms are giving you the most traction in terms of organic and paid traffic, affording you the ability to focus your efforts and marketing dollars on the platforms that deliver the top results. Both the web and mobile app versions are equipped with this feature.
Knowing which pages on your website are getting the most traffic is powerful information that can be exploited to your advantage. These pages can be tweaked to turn visitors into email subscribers, create a giveaway or download bonus, turn the page into a landing page, even add content to promote your products or services – optimization strategies to boost your conversion rates, essentially.
A feature that’s available for Enterprise customers, SimilarWeb PRO’s Popular Pages gives users a comprehensive view into the most valuable pages of their websites, including the traffic share each page is getting. From your account’s dashboard, simply click on Popular Pages under Website Content, and you’re all set to analyze your website’s prime content according to geography, time period, and the like.
Traffic trends are derived from long-term traffic data. SimilarWeb PRO offers data that can go back 25 months. From there, you’ll see which months provided the most and least traffic, allowing you to anticipate what may be coming in the next few months, giving you ample time to carefully plan your marketing campaigns and capitalize on seasonal traffic spikes, if any, for improved user engagement and better CRO (conversion rate optimization) returns.
In the case of traffic drops, SimilarWeb PRO gives you accurate data to analyze, thanks to its extensive worldwide user sample, to assist you in determining the factors negatively affecting your traffic stats and what to do to turn things around.
Not too long ago, Google, the most widely used search engine, decided to no longer show the keywords searchers use to get to a website, hence, the search terms “not provided” and “not set” in web administrators’ Google Analytics dashboards. That doesn’t mean, however, that keyword usage is becoming extinct. As a matter of fact, as far as search engines and online marketers are concerned, keywords will never cease to exist (not in the distant future, at least) because they’re still the primary way users search for things they need from the Internet.
To determine your top keywords, including those of your competitors, under Traffic Sources, click Search. Aside from the usual search numbers like desktop visits, organic versus paid search, and search traffic by channels, SimilarWeb shows you the top search terms, the total group traffic share for each term, and a color-coded traffic share distribution of the compared websites for each of those terms.
To perform keyword analysis on mobile apps, open a tab for each of the apps you’d like to compare. Right away, you’ll see which app is more popular. If your app is that which lags behind, analyzing your competitors’ keywords and learning from their successes can help you boost your app’s standing in the app stores and improve your search optimization strategies through a broader range of search terms, multilingual searches, adding pertinent keywords to your app’s title, store description and tags, even use the same keywords for your PPC campaigns.
SimilarWeb readily integrates with WhatRunsWhere for insight into the banner ads used by the competition. It also has a native API (application programming interface) that allows companies to integrate SimilarWeb data with just about any third-party application.
SimilarWeb offers free analytics via http://www.similarweb.com/. Just type in the name of the website or app you want analyzed, and you get data like global, country and industry rank, monthly visits, engagement stats, traffic sources, traffic distribution by geography, among a whole slew of others.

We have been using Similarweb for already 18 months now and it has given us a lot of insights about our competitors's traffic. The UI is slick and easy to navigate thru. It’s easy to drill down into the data by clicking on the left-hand navigation icons. The data is really accurate especially for trends (we can confirm it by looking at our own Google analytics) The "also visited" section is particularly interesting to identify new competitors or potential sites to partner with to get more traffic.
