Pros

I love that the tool is so easy to use and it turns data into a manageable and easy to digest appearance. It manages to make data fun to look at, and it's really easy to work with.
I also like the fact that the company is always striving to improve their software as it shows dedication to the field. With every update I find that the new features help with my job quite a lot.
Linking existing databases works like a charm. It has a plethora of data visualization methods which is extremely professional and helpful for users to gain valuable insights.

Pros

It's an incredible programming for examination. I love the perception highlights since it transform drilling information into fun outlines or diagrams.
The ability to filter to the specific metric we are interested in is an amazing feature.
It is a good data analytics and visualization software and its ability to import data from multiples sources is a great feature.

Cons

I'll say that it was really frustrating to use in the beginning, it is complex and if you've never been in it before it is overwhelming.
Due to my lack of familiarity in how to code, I was uncomfortable at first and found it difficult to learn.
What is even more annoying is that it also takes several minutes to cancel a query. I really don't understand how it can take that long just to cancel a query.

Cons

Could be frustrating to use when first starting as it would give you an error message but provide no specifics on what is wrong or directions to fix it.
I find it a bit frustrating when presented with a visualisation that doesn't represent the particular angle on the data I am looking for.
Had to take some training courses and even at that it was still confusing.

Breakthrough in visualization reports

Reviewed 4 years ago

In a developer perspective, Tableau is robust with its drill-down, Join and union between datasets features, it offers good product support and flexible to use with various databases. In the end user perspective, its eye-catching with its interactive and colourful stories/dashboards and is currently in trend.

Pros

1. Ease of use 2. Can be integrated with all databases including SAP HANA. 3. Reports can be viewed in different landscapes ( mobile ,tablet ,desktop ,laptop) 4. Interactive reports and stories can be made ( heat maps etc). 5. Reports can be published on the server or made public.

Cons

1. A bit hard to understand for the technical novices. 2. Power BI is giving tough competition to tableau through its integration to Microsoft office 365. 3. Small business won't be able to afford this.

Pros

At first it seemed intimidating and then I watched a 20min overview video and saw how crazy easy it is to use and drill down into data to see what you need. The insights are powerful and the views just build themselves when you drag/drop fields. Crazy easy!

Cons

The cost is high, but it's for a reason. They are kind of "alone" in this field aside from something like Microsoft Power BI, which is a whole different animal in terms of use, but same in purpose.

Tableau

Tableau is great for both quick and complex data visualizations

Reviewed 4 years ago

We are using Tableau to create complex visualizations that are utilized in automated reporting to inform our users of the current state of the business. We also use this in assisting in data mining activities for our data science endeavors. We visualize variables quickly compared to what we can do in Python and R.

Pros

I love how it is versatile in its complexities - we can use drag and drop tools, but we can also utilize code to create more complex visualizations and data aggregations.

Cons

The pricing structure is annual and a bit high - it is less versatile compared to other BI tools, like Power BI which allows for a monthly subscription at a lower rate, albeit with lessened functionalities.

Tableau is relatively user-friendly and allows me to create simple and interactive dashboards for clients to use.

Great tool, especially with the addition of Prep

Reviewed 3 years ago

It is a really nice visualization tool, and the GUI is fantastic. The most frustrating issues I have had with the software seem to have been addressed with Prep, so I am quite happy overall (although Tableau adds a charge for prep...Power BI includes its "ETL" tool in the standard product).

Pros

Before they added the data Prep "ETL" tool, Tableau really couldn't compare to Cognos or Power BI. With that tool, it's superior visualization features put it ahead in many ways.

Cons

It is nearly impossible to join more than two data sources effectively without breaking something. Luckily, prep has made this much less of a problem.

Powerful Analytics, But Some Bugs

Reviewed 4 years ago

Definitely recommended because it is the best software out there. However, if you are transitioning from Excel, and are a small company, you might want to consider Microsoft's Power BI.

Pros

Cons

There are bugs here and there in the software. The software is not perfect, but the Tableau team keeps rectifying these bugs. There is no monthly subscription plan.

Tableau has a lot of new features that are rolled out, including the Ask Data feature which allows users to utilize the natural language processing. Adding additional features allows Tableau to stay competitive in the market

Cons

Tableau does not roll-out some new enhancements at the pace that other competitors are. For instance, Power BI has certain features that Tableau took longer to offer to the users

Very nice and intutive visualization tool

Reviewed 3 years ago

I am a huge fan. The Power Query mashup tool that was added to excel and comes with Power BI is really simple to use and gives a novice the ability to do some moderately complex ETL.

Pros

Much more flexible and easy to use than Cognos or Tableau (although Tableau is really catching up with the Prep tool)

Cons

It is exceptionally slow if you do not constantly monitor and tweak for performance and they are very slow to make upgrades

Microsoft Power BI

Great for financial reporting, dismal for timelines, gantts and other date related tracking.

Reviewed 2 years ago

Frustrating. Yes, there are thousands of examples and videos of how to create financial reports (or any number related data) but forget trying to use dates, statuses, Gantt, timelines, etc. I am tired of the community asking "Why do you want to track that?" Or "Oh, I don't think Power BI can do that."

Pros

The price was better than Tableau. Free Desktop software.

Cons

Complete lack of date tracking options. it's like MS had no clue or did not care people might actually want to track dates. (Think things like say, a global pandemic.) Sure, you can find free timeline templates but they only support a single start and end date. Want multiple dates in a swim lane? Get ready to shell out $$$$ for custom development. Also, who else but Microsoft would develop a VISUAL reporting tool that requires a command line tool to develop custom templates? As for the "visual" aspect, no problem as long you don't want custom shapes or colors. Overly cumbersome/complicated architecture. Lacks easy way to group by items. Very little drag and drop functionality. (See Tableau)

Solid solution, consider alternatives

Reviewed 3 years ago

Decent enough solution. Check out alternatives such as Tableau.

Pros

Web-based software allows information and dashboards to be easily shared with co-workers, encouraging them to engage with data in an interactive fashion.

Cons

End users are not typically empowered to perform the sorts of drill-down or exploratory analytics that they may want without the report designer pre-building these scenarios in mind and making such dimensions available.

Pretty good but not better than Tableau yet

Reviewed 4 years ago
Pros

All of the features are there and it integrates well with Excel

Cons

It's pricier than Tableau. Honestly, we've been using Tableau so long that it was going to be tough to convince us to switch without a price break.

Overall the best Dashboard software at this moment

Reviewed 3 years ago

Part of our dashboards were developped using Power BI. Although the UI is not as perfect as Tableau, Basically it can achieve all Tableau can do, (maybe not as quick or few steps as Tableau).the modelling, the strong ETL support, the Power Query and integration with office can offset the drawbacks.

Pros

1. The wide and deep design and full support for upstream and downstream systems; 2. Excellent query engine with well design data modelling principals (which is better than Tableau); 3. Seamless integration with other Microsoft data integration products such as SSIS, SSRS, SSAS; 4. Excellent knowledgebase community and support; 5. Quick update to the Azure cloud support

Cons

1. UI design is a little bit inconvenient comparing to Tableau. 2. DAX is a bit complicated for power users.

Okay - A little clunky

Reviewed 3 months ago
Pros

Great tool and alternative to Tableau - useful for data visualization and analytics

Cons

When resize the internet browser, all of the report sizing is fixed relative to the browser - so if you make your browser smaller the reports become small and difficult to read.
