Apache OpenOffice Feature Reviews

Cheap alternative for Microsoft office

2021-07-29

Its frugal to use OpenOffice as compared Microsoft office.

Pros

OpenOffice has everything that a document management, data management tool should have.

Cons

The only downside is the look and feel, even though it has everything for the cheapest value but the UI is not eye-catching.

A nice alternative to Microsoft Word

2019-05-15

Pros

Basic version is free and a more easily customizable version of Microsoft Word.

Cons

Native files sometimes don't read well by other document programs like Microsoft Word so you're better off just using OpenOffice for all document projects or importing other document formats into OpenOffice.

Very happy

2020-08-19

I like using it when I'm working on pcs that don't have an office suite, because I have the portable version and it's good for its purpose.

Pros

I like the old style layout of the programs, with a management through menus, and the fact that it's easy to edit documents with all the functionalities of a pricey program.

Cons

Some thongs, like the incapability of keeping a specified layout of a document, the changing of format and font size, are quite annoying.

Difficult to use

2018-12-14

We have had team members that only had access to OpenOffice, so I use it to read OpenOffice files.

Pros

I like the fact that OpenOffice is free, and can be a good solution on a tight budget.

Cons

It is very difficult to import and export to various file formats, and also difficult to use various features.

OpenOffice Review

2018-11-24

It's a great free alternative to Microsoft Office and would recommend it as an option to people who are not able to have access to Microsoft

Pros

The alternative word document has no major differences to Word itself, same sort of features and also has its own template versions, so there is an alternative to every service you are used to having.

Cons

As I was used to having word documents and just saving them, I found it hard to remember to save the documents as a word document rather than an open office document as I found that some people I was sending the documents to were having issues when the document opened.

I use this when I'm on a system that doesn't have access to Microsoft Word.

2018-07-23

It is perfect for people who don't need to regularly use Word but need access to a similar program for occasional use.

Pros

I love that it's free! There are times I don't need to subscribe to Microsoft Office, but need to open docs, and this software works great for that purpose. It is simple so there isn't much to learn which I appreciate.

Cons

It's a bit too simple for complicated projects such as making changes to my resume or designed documents.

Free to use Office Suite that does the Basics Well

2018-05-17

Pros

Easy to use, Free Word Processing and Spreadsheet software that can be used offline.

Cons

User interface is a bit dated compared to other products, and some file formats are proprietary so documents don't share easily. But still a good free offline product

Decent Free Office Suite Microsoft Replacement

2017-10-03

The benefit is to have a full word processor, spreadsheets, presentation suite for free without having to pay for a Microsoft subscription.

Pros

Open Office is a product that serves as a replacement for MicroSoft Office Suite for those who can't afford the MS brand. You can save files as MS Word documents if you need to share the electronic files with others.

Cons

I can be hard to find what your looking for within the UI and that is mostly because I am used to Microsoft Word so there is an initial learning curve.

Good open-source alternative for famous office tools

2019-12-24

It’s a solid option if the widely accessible online tools are not enough and you have a budget constraint to buy the competition.

Pros

It’s free, open-source and include several applications that are commonly required for office tasks, such as document and presentation editors, and a spreadsheet tool.

Cons

The interface is cluttered and very outdated.

Works extremely well and is not subscription based!

2018-05-09

Allows me to open and edit the occasional office document that we receive and need to reply to without dealing with a cloud editor or service.

Pros

It is not subscription based (we do not need or use an office suite for daily activities), it also opens most documents without issues and gives and option to convert or keep in the original format.

Cons

There are some issue with various macros and functions from MS Office imported documents.

The only office program you'll ever need

2019-06-28

My experience has been exceptional with this product. I consider it superior to Microsoft Office.

Pros

It also works with a wider range of file types. I use it to create the newsletter for a local non-profit organization.

Cons

Also, the fact it default saves text documents as an ODF file makes it difficult to share with Apple users unless you manually choose another file type when you save a document.

Apache OpenOffice Instead of Licensed Microsoft Office Suite

2019-04-06

Overall, it is nice to have a secondary option, free option of text editing if I want to quickly create my work without having to go through the trouble of purchasing Microsoft products.

Pros

Additionally, it acts very similar to that of the paid Microsoft Office with plenty of features and capabilities to support decent text editing (text document), data inputting (spreadsheet), and presentation making (presentation).

Cons

Often, the format may change when trying to import or export documents from one tool to the other.

OpenOffice Review

2021-08-15

Pros

OpenOffice has a stable version now which makes me use it often for checking my files for compatability purposes.

Cons

Compatability issues with Microsoft Office might be one of the problems I saw since importing files from OpenOffice to Microsoft Office makes some of its content not available.

Great alternate for Office software for the general user

2021-01-21

It's compatible with other file formats and checks all the boxes that I need.

Pros

Easy to use and similar in basic feature usage to other paid applications out there.

Cons

UI and search options leave something to be desired and some additional features that one would be used to using in MS Office might be non existent or can be challenging to complete, but what more can you expect from a free tool.

This IS my office suite

2018-12-14

As mentioned above only recently have I have problems with advanced mathematical formulas from a DOCX file.

Pros

It also reasonably supports many file formats since I often have to use it to read documents from others in their format.

Cons

It could do a better job with importing complicated formulas from a DOCX file.

Good compatibility has improved

2018-09-05

You can easily export to different formats and have good overall translation to PDF and Word for most office documents.

Pros

I love that is free, I can do work stuff from home and it is compatible with Word on my work PC. Easy to download, install and use.

Cons

Translation from some files especially image heavy things, in Word and Powerpoint, are typically off a little.

Good suite for those on a budget

2019-02-06

If you are on a tight budget and can't afford MS Office, or don't need all the fancier features that come with it, then OpenOffice could be right for you. Great for students who don't need to be spending the extra money for a word processor.

Pros

The Apache OpenOffice suite is well featured and very usable.

Cons

The interface feels a little outdated, and it's not fully compatible with Microsoft Office documents.
