Apache OpenOffice Feature Reviews

25 reviewers had the following to say about Apache OpenOffice's features:

Rossella Dulbecco

Very happy

2020-08-19

I like using it when I'm working on pcs that don't have an office suite, because I have the portable version and it's good for its purpose.

Pros

I like the old style layout of the programs, with a management through menus, and the fact that it's easy to edit documents with all the functionalities of a pricey program.

Cons

Some thongs, like the incapability of keeping a specified layout of a document, the changing of format and font size, are quite annoying.

Good suite for those on a budget

2019-02-06

If you are on a tight budget and can't afford MS Office, or don't need all the fancier features that come with it, then OpenOffice could be right for you. Great for students who don't need to be spending the extra money for a word processor.

Pros

The Apache OpenOffice suite is well featured and very usable.

Cons

The interface feels a little outdated, and it's not fully compatible with Microsoft Office documents.

Good open-source alternative for famous office tools

2019-12-24

It’s a solid option if the widely accessible online tools are not enough and you have a budget constraint to buy the competition.

Pros

It’s free, open-source and include several applications that are commonly required for office tasks, such as document and presentation editors, and a spreadsheet tool.

Cons

The interface is cluttered and very outdated.

An alternate office suite.

2018-06-19

Very functional and easy to use.

Pros

OpenOffice is very easy to use and comes with all options like its competitor Microsoft Office.

Cons

OpenOffice has some difficulty when importing a .csv file. I have had issues with this and have tried everything to no avail.

Free to use Office Suite that does the Basics Well

2018-05-17

Pros

Easy to use, Free Word Processing and Spreadsheet software that can be used offline.

Cons

User interface is a bit dated compared to other products, and some file formats are proprietary so documents don't share easily.

A nice alternative to Microsoft Word

2019-05-15

Pros

Basic version is free and a more easily customizable version of Microsoft Word.

Cons

Native files sometimes don't read well by other document programs like Microsoft Word so you're better off just using OpenOffice for all document projects or importing other document formats into OpenOffice.

Great tool for document creation

2019-12-24

It's a great free solution for everyday office needs

Pros

The open office has all the minimum functionality for creating standard format documents such as text, spreadsheets and slides.

Cons

The software interface is a point that leaves a little to be desired because it is old and not updated.

Works extremely well and is not subscription based!

2018-05-09

Allows me to open and edit the occasional office document that we receive and need to reply to without dealing with a cloud editor or service.

Pros

It is not subscription based (we do not need or use an office suite for daily activities), it also opens most documents without issues and gives and option to convert or keep in the original format.

Cons

There are some issue with various macros and functions from MS Office imported documents. It is also a little resource intensive.

I use this when I'm on a system that doesn't have access to Microsoft Word.

2018-07-23

It is perfect for people who don't need to regularly use Word but need access to a similar program for occasional use.

Pros

I love that it's free! There are times I don't need to subscribe to Microsoft Office, but need to open docs, and this software works great for that purpose. It is simple so there isn't much to learn which I appreciate.

Cons

It's a bit too simple for complicated projects such as making changes to my resume or designed documents.

Great product for the price

2017-11-09

I get increased productivity by being able to create presentations, documents, and spreadsheets without having to pay a lot of money.

Pros

What's not to like about free software that helps you get stuff done? I am glad that there are great developers and companies that are willing to offer software like this for free.

Cons

One feature that is sorely missing is some kind of collaborative editor.

Decent Free Office Suite Microsoft Replacement

2017-10-03

The benefit is to have a full word processor, spreadsheets, presentation suite for free without having to pay for a Microsoft subscription.

Pros

Open Office is a product that serves as a replacement for MicroSoft Office Suite for those who can't afford the MS brand. You can save files as MS Word documents if you need to share the electronic files with others.

Cons

I can be hard to find what your looking for within the UI and that is mostly because I am used to Microsoft Word so there is an initial learning curve.

Easy to use

2019-02-02

So far, I have mainly used the Writer for my writing projects and/or notes and brainstorming. The simplicity of the software has been really beneficial to me in this regard, and it has been an overall really enjoyable experience.

Pros

Very clean user interface and streamlined workspace. Simple to learn the functions, and easy to adapt to.

Cons

So far, I haven’t had any issues. It is free software, so it would have to be a pretty big problem to justify any major complaints.

OpenOffice Review

2018-11-24

It's a great free alternative to Microsoft Office and would recommend it as an option to people who are not able to have access to Microsoft

Pros

The alternative word document has no major differences to Word itself, same sort of features and also has its own template versions, so there is an alternative to every service you are used to having.

Cons

As I was used to having word documents and just saving them, I found it hard to remember to save the documents as a word document rather than an open office document as I found that some people I was sending the documents to were having issues when the document opened.

Awesome software.

2018-08-10

You can also use the mobile app for it too.

Pros

I actually really like this software the most compared to other software that is similar because not only is it free for anyone who wishes to use it but it is also able to be customized easily.

Cons

The software is great to use but sometimes the formatting doesn't match up on other software when transferred to another software program.

Hey, it's Free, you'll always get more than what you pay for.

2017-11-07

Free ability to have lots of functionality - just don't share any working documents with people because most companies only have Office.

Pros

And as long as everyone you know uses OpenOffice (or if you only send .PDF files), you'll never have formatting issues.

Cons

As alluded to above, one of the major problems I've faced in the past when using OpenOffice, is the inability (in some cases) to have Microsoft Word open an OpenOffice file without making it look like a 1st grader tried formatting the document. Given that this is an open source code, the formatting issues and correction time might make buying Microsoft Office a more viable option.

The only office program you'll ever need

2019-06-28

My experience has been exceptional with this product. I consider it superior to Microsoft Office.

Pros

It also works with a wider range of file types. I use it to create the newsletter for a local non-profit organization.

Cons

Also, the fact it default saves text documents as an ODF file makes it difficult to share with Apple users unless you manually choose another file type when you save a document.

Most Recent Version Crashes Constantly Leading to Lost Work

2019-03-19

I really like the user interface and features overall.

Pros

Besides the options of the search function, I have never felt like there was a feature that is in Word that I needed and didn't have in Writer.

Cons

But, I resent the fact that, whatever issue my laptop may have had, OpenOffice interfaced with it in such a way that now I don't have access to my computer anymore.
