Open Office is cheap and a great alternative to the conventional Microsoft Office package.

Pros
Open office is the best alternative to the conventional Microsoft Office package. It is easy to use and in terms of price there is no question that it is the best alternative on the market in my opinion.

Cons
Open Office does not provide as many features as Microsoft Office and the support is not as good but isn't bad either. Besides not having as many features, it has everything needed to create documents in every format needed.

My overall experience with Apache OpenOffice is great. The software is very valuable for what you get.

Pros
It's way cheaper than Microsoft Office. It has all the same options Microsoft Office has to offer at a much lower price.

Cons
It's not as easy to operate the software as the competitors. The spreadsheets are not very customizable.

If you need an inexpensive offline option to Word or Excel, this is it.

Pros
I like the price and value for all of the great features. Very comparable to any expensive software with the same purpose.

Cons
This product could be more be more compatible with other software by having more similar coding and formatting. This would allow easy transitions from one file type to another.

I depend on it daily for writing and spreadsheets and am not disappointed! Cannot beat the free price.

Pros
It does everything -- i mainly use word processing and spreadsheets -- without getting wrapped up in Microsoft's intrusive and expensive software. I can open and save as Word, can open CVS, etc. Easy and effective

Cons
What's not to like, except they leave phone apps to private developers and i do wish i could search and replace tabs and other formatting symbols, but nobody's asked this since Microsoft Works in the 1990s!

Per the pros and cons, and having stayed faithfully with OO over time, I came to the conclusion last week that it is cheaper to buy an Office suite that works well than to struggle with this free offering that doesn't. I repeat that I appreciate enormously the effort of the volunteers who sincerely create a large body of working, quality code, and who support it through the forums, but my unfortunate conclusion after all that is - it isn't worth it. Just to mention I have the standard Office suite that I paid full price for, like everybody. OO was out of interest and curiosity to see if it is an alternative even up to to a certain level, but it isn't. I'm not sure how you convert frustration to $, but at some point, you're in negative. Bugs get you there immediately. Again, many thanks to the volunteers, but if you're going to spend more than an hour or two with OO, buy yourself the standard Office suite and save yourself a lot of time and frustration.

Pros
It's free. It covers a lot of the basic day-to-day. Kudos and thanks to the volunteers who created and support this software.

Cons
It has a number of usability issues. It has some downright bugs. The cost (free) is more than offset by the time and frustration figuring out, or working around, the issues. It's cheaper to buy a proper product (sorry team, you guys do a great job, but it actually ends up costing).

Pros
We chose Apache because of the price, zero. We kept using it because it performs across all platforms and gives us the functionality we were accustomed to with Microsoft.

Cons
Like most everything. Being a well versed Microsoft user, I knew which functions were possible. Sometimes had to execute it differently. So, maybe a slight learning curve.

I can install it on low-level computers and I do not have to pay expensive licenses.

Pros
Excellent set of programs that allows me to work any file related to office automation (Spreadsheets, Word Processor, Design of presentations, Generation of flow charts and flowcharts, Home database, etc.) very easy to install and use. It can be installed in any operating system (Window, Linuz or Mac)

Cons
There is very little to say about weaknesses, as many benefits are obtained with this suite. But there is a detail that must be solved, such as the loss of format of files from other similar programs. Sometimes you have to redo them, since they distort a lot.

Best Microsoft Office Word and PowerPoint, Open Source Alternative

Used daily for 2+ years
Reviewed 2018-09-06
Review Source: Capterra

The product is easy to use, economical and a great resource for a company short on immediate funds for a paid license(s) to similar software.

Pros
The price for OpenOffice is unbeatable at free. My first favorite component of this suite is OpenOffice Writer. It carries enough features to enable a user to write and maintain an immense document, such as a novel, easily. In order to make an OpenOffice Writer document compatible with Word, simply save the .odt file as .doc. OpenOffice Impress is my second favorite software in the bundle and can be used to create very nice presentations. It is also a bit easier for a tech newbie to work with vs PowerPoint.

Cons
OpenOffice Math has a con. Simply because it is not something I would need or use often. Saying this, if I did need to use it rarely, it is a bit time consuming to justify learning for a use greater than once or twice use every two - three years.

Overall, when unable to afford Office, OpenOffice has been an excellent alternative for our users. It allows them to open, edit and save Word documents, as well as spreadsheets.

Pros
I love the fact that you can obtain the majority of Office functionality without spending a small fortune. It allows you to interact with the majority of office products at an affordable price(free).

Cons
There are a few things that the software can’t interact with due to limited functionality. MS Office does have some file types that are proprietary and nothing else interacts with them.

Everyday file editing and creation at the price of free. Awesome!

Pros
First and foremost, I love that this is open source. Free is a price that's hard to argue with. On top of that, the software works very well and is reliable. I love that this software supports the Microsoft file types.

Cons
If someone sends over a document created in a different software, I find that it will sometimes (very rarely) have trouble with formatting, but if it is important, I usually want to receive it as a PDF instead of a DOC anyway.

Great free alternative to Microsoft products.

This is a great free alternative if you can't afford the premium of Microsoft products. I'd be willing to recommend this to anyone that needs to throw together a quick spreadsheet but doesn't want to pay the full price for a product that they'll only use once or twice.

Pros
I recently setup a computer for my grandparents, who previously had a free version of Microsoft Excel that they used to manage a handful of spreadsheets for their home business. After setting up their new computer, they no longer had the free Excel version so we opted for OpenOffice instead. They hardly knew the difference and were even able to use a lot of their previous files from Excel in this product. It's a great free alternative!

Cons
The UI isn't quite as pleasing to the eye as some other alternatives, and there is a slight learning curve since mostly everyone is used to using Excel, but after you get the hang of it there isn't much to complain about.

It worked for what I needed at the time. I have recommended this option to people who simply are not in a position to buy commercial software. Their needs are such that they don't need intuitive or even know what that might be. Once I am used to the offering, it does work very well. I appreciate the efforts that go into innovation and believe that innovation should be encouraged and supported.

Pros
A philosophic opportunity at a great price. Sometimes we just want to exert our independence and use software that is being built all the time. The price is terrific, although you can donate to help developers.

Cons
Be aware that this software isn't as intuitive as it could be. There are times when it seems archaic, reminding me of office suites from the 1990s.

Great price and easy to use. More people should try and use this software.

Pros
If you have used the office suite from the only other Office company you will be amazed that you can get a free alternative that does most of what the other company charges for. Almost all of the features that normal users need. It may be able to do advance stuff in Excel but do you really need these?

Cons
Nothing! It is not as clean and doesn't have some of the advance features a few users need. This is only a small group in my mind.

We use it as a backup of our main office tools .The fact that it doesn't cost anything means we cannot afford not having Apache if something goes wrong elsewhere.

Pros
You can't beat free and Apache is exactly that .Each new update brings improvements .The formats are supported by other office administration tools which makes transitioning from one platform to the other easy .This allows for fluid working conditions . The interface is similar to what you'll already know from Microsoft Office ,which makes working with Apache easy .

Cons
While working on it ,it seems like you are running the programs on Windows 2000 .Some cosmetics issues aside ,Apache OpenOffice is an amazing bundle with little to complain about .
