Pros
I worked on intranets for crown corporation in BC, and I have to say, I prefer Bonzai over an out-of-the-box solution because of it's modern design and team of developers working to improve each year.
Cons
It would also be nice to have a custom permissions, there's been issues with publisher posting the wrong story on the homepage, but it happens so few and far between we can make do with out it.

The Bonzai intranet platform currently needs to be installed on each site collection in your environment versus installing it at the farm level.

Our staff like the News and Events, Document Portal, Employee and Department Spotlights and Marketplace the most.
Cons
There are a couple of key features missing. We'd like a company calendar that goes beyond that of the clunky Sharepoint calendar. We are also missing site update alerts that would be helpful to authors.

We also love the directory feature. Our employee directory is so much easier to use and find what you need than what we had before.
Cons
There aren't any significant cons. There are a couple of enhancements we have requested and they are quick to reply on the viability of our suggestions.

One of our customers deployed Bonzai for the intranet refresh project they were doing, with great results. Found the Bonzai OOB deployment was quite strong, and even more importantly, that the consultants from Bonzai were extremely helpful and were'nt just trying to get more hours.

Recommendations to others considering Bonzai Intranet
Very important time-and-money saver for an intranet project. Don't expect it to be the end of the journey, you'll still need other add-ons, some consulting, etc. But it streamlines projects dramatically.
We were able to execute from design to go-live in a matter of months.
