Dropbox Business is easy to get started with. No need to set up a server or other infrastructure. Clients are available for mobile (Android, iOS) and desktop (Windows, Mac). There are extensive features which make collaboration easy and a history of files changes to restore previous copies. While it is not possible to edit a Word document (or other Microsoft Office files) together with other persons at the same time, there is a useful indicator showing when a file is opened at the same time by multiple users to prevent data loss.
Dropbox Business is quite expensive when compared with free alternatives such as NextCloud. The newest client is not any more available for Linux.

Dropbox is great if you want a complete solution and are willing to pay for it, but we prefer Nextcloud since in more customizable and keeps our data in our hands.
The plethora of functions, collaboration, ease of use, local client and web based...
To intrusive, a lot of commercials, upgrade offers, extra fluff

I have used Dropbox for many years and never had any problems they have always been up and provided plenty of storage for my needs. the unlimited storage with business accounts is nice when you get low you call support and they tac on a few more TB's easy peasy!
They have clients for everything. Linux, Windows, Mac, Android, iOS all covered. This is by far the best cloud storage drive around. The client syncs files in seconds between all your computers and the versioning in the cloud is top notch. They set the bar in this field and they set the bar very high. There are also many different add-ons for Drop box as well that let you mount it as a mapped drive or a fuse filesystem so that is an advantage as well if you don't want to sync down all of your files from the cloud.
It is not hosted your self that is the only drawback being on somebody else's infrastructure means that theoretically they can see your files and have access to them so if you are worried about that look into Nextcloud.

Regarding sync features, software performance and reliability, Dropbox Business is by far the best option. The only downsides are the security issues in the past and the privacy problems (that made us even think about using tresorit or a self-hosted Nextcloud).
- stunning syncing technolgoy (delta sync) that only uploads changes (if you edit one sentence in a 800 pages book Dropbox only uploads that one sentence, and not the whole document) - by far better performance than all other competitors (tested on Android, Linux Mint and Windows 10) - great looking & native apps for all operating systems we use - good pricing - no security issues in the last months - strong API that integrates with many third-party programs and makes own integrations easy - additional software for businesses included (e.g. Dropbox Paper)
- huge security issues, especially in the past (e.g. I remember that it was possible to login only using the email address without password for a few hours many years ago) - files are stored in the US and Dropbox lets security agencies access all files without judicial order

Great self-hosted dropbox alternative.
This is a great dropbox alternative with the ability to be self-hosted.
It can be tricky to setup remote storage options.

I am independant from organizations like Dropbox or Google.
Next to files, contacts and calendars you could store notes, read news, listen to music, create mindmaps and many more
You have to maintain your own server to keep the data absolute private. You need an DDNS service as well.
Dear Mark Thank you for the review on Capterra! We're very glad you are happy with Nextcloud! If you want to get the most out of Nextcloud, don't forget we have Nextcloud Subscriptions available. That improves much on the community help aimed at home users like you'll find on the forums and gives access to additional documentation and capabilities like our Outlook integration, Global Scale and more. Take care!

Excellent replacement for other files in the cloud software such as DropBox
1. Securely host data on our own servers and encrypted on AWS 2. Enabled us to access and backup our data on current projects and their resources across different computers/phones and across national boundaries 3. Removed the need to carry data on laptops 4. Useful software integrated into Nextcloud
Logs and deleted files can build up on the server. 'Talk' was more difficult than expected to set up

As mentioned in the last point above: 3. UI is poorly integrated with the OS. It is usable, but it can be better. Compare scrolling in browser and scrolling in a list there. You will see the difference. 4. android upload/share is not reliable. User experience in the android app leaves much to be desired. For example on fairly modern phone and on wifi connection, the UI hangs on every screen for some time (sometimes fractions of seconds, but sometimes for multiple seconds). This is unacceptable. If I want to show my friends a funny picture that fits into conversation and can not open it very fast. It is a frustrating experience. 4.1. What is more important is that the file sync function works reliably. And that is not a case, at least not in the android app. When my wife selects some photos or videos that she wants to move to nextcloud folder and only a subset of it actually gets moved. What can I say, please check which of 100 photos were uploaded and retry those that were not uploaded. First, have fun finding them. Second, watch that it works this time, or you have to repeat. What do you think she tells me? Oh, I like how this peace of software works. Definitely not. And that's frustrating to me because I setup and maintain the nextcloud instance.
That it exists! And it is on the market for a while now. Free, and more importantly self-hosted, alternative to Dropbox. I know it is more than dropbox, but more on that later.
Initially it was a software to share files between different computers and possibly with other people. Managing files is nextcloud's core competence. And even after years using it, it is sad to see that it doesn't always work reliably! I can tell couple of examples from experiences. 1. constant conflicts. I use a diary software to keep notes and often get conflicts when doing notes. Luckily it is in plain text so I can resolve conflicts, in contrast to binary files where it is mostly not trivial at all. While keeping doing notes it is tiresome and tedious to being obligated to solve these conflicts although it is just an ongoing stream of changes. 2. Activity view is not usable. It is just frustrating to not being able to see and find the information you need. Sometimes it is just a list of files that are being ignored on top of the list. I don't care about the files that are ignored all the time. A dropdown menu can be provided to select the files I want to see. Filter the conflicts or ignored files or whatever else is there. 2.1. File(s) that are being synced right now, where are they? If it's a big iso image being synced now and if I interrupt have to start over. The main tab with folders gives me only numbers like "syncing file 5 out of 72". 2.2. In the same Activity tab so much space is wasted. You could move this date of sync to the right on the same line if it fits, and only if it doesn't fit into one line move it to the next. Ok, this box is limited to 1500 symbol

save of money, immediate integration with mobile devices, quick portability from other service (like Dropbox)
rich of functions easy integration with PC desktop (exactly like Dropbox) easy integration with Android mobile
for domestic usage you can get big saving of money against 2 terabyte web services provided by Google / Dropbox / Microsoft etc. and small cost of hardware (raspberry plus 2 terabyte HD USB 3 is much lower than QNAP Nas).

We get to keep a huge amount of our data in our cloud and manage security of our data very easily. We get transparent access to our data and the operations we perform on it. This is very important from a privacy and security perspective and nextcloud wins hands down compared with Dropbox or Box.
Very secure. Own your data. Plugins are easy to add. Very easy to administer. Setup is easy. Ample and ever growing feature set. Privacy, security are prime features.
There have a few issues that come up sometimes but are similar to issues we had faced with Dropbox. Unlike Dropbox though, addition of plugins and the transparency with which nextcloud works made making changes to nextcloud to suit our needs very easy.

Very good, good performance. Ease of use. Well-maintained.
It is very straightforward to set up and very easy to enroll users. It is a very credible in-house replacement for dropbox, contacts, and calendar.
Its dependence on apache and php. There is a real vulnerability there. Beware when rushing into upgrades of those. If they break, your Nextcloud is broken too.

I was looking to self host an alternative to Dropbox that had good ease of use and places importance on privacy, but can still share to friends and family.
Desktop and mobile clients are good, and the server is simple to install and keep updated. Syncing works flawless.

The ability to desktop sync and have your own in-house dropbox. Its fast without too many issues. The apps available are pretty good and provide a lot of features.
Implementation and configuration is very painful. With many advanced things required in order to set it up properly. Which can take a very long time!

Great experience, good usersupport and because the software is that simple to install and use you hardly need support from them.
The software is easy installable, configurable and especially easy in use. Besides we have our own cloud now without the thought that dropbox or google is watching in the documents.
There are no cons, just use it. The use is that simple, that's why I'm postitive and don't see any disadavantages compared to other products.

Nextcloud has given me the opportunity to be able to share with customers their pictures that I would normally not be able to email or use for free with Dropbox.
Being able to host cloud storage on my own server.
Seems a little slow to load but that could have everything to do with my server speed and not nextcloud. Hard to say.

We have a positive reaction from our users. They like that files are synced to their pc for offline access, versioning in case something happened to a file.
A free tier is offered with a large host of features that you won't get on the hosted competiton (Dropbox) except in the higher tiers. Love the versioning features as well as sharing files.
Upgrading can be difficult although it has come a long way since the split from OwnCloud. Also for those not tech savy the initial setup can be a bit complex, for those I would recommend a docker image.

I had a pleasant experience with the software, but it's not for me and doesn't live up to my expectations of such a software.
It's easy to use, setup, and maintain functional file sharing and backup systems effectively... It's good for that.
It lacks a lot of the selling points of alternative options for this purpose, such as MEGASync, Google Drive, Dropbox, and similar services. I could not rely solely on Nextcloud without some of my needs going unmet.

The initial set up of the linux system and th nextcloud install/ upgrade required quite some time and a steep learning curve. But now I am extremely happy with this software and the accompanying iOS applications. It allows me to automatically upload all my photos to the cloud, similar to the native iOS iCloud app. All my data, music, photos, are save on my personal server.
I was able to ditch monthly fees for iTunes Match and iCloud monthly storage fees by switching to Nextcloud. Privacy concerns lead me to abandon Microsoft/Apple/Amazon/Google/Dropbox cloud drives in favor of Nextcloud who can do it all.
It takes some initial effort if you want to build your own webserver on an old PC, installing linux, etc. but its doable for non-linux people.

NextCloud is an incredible piece of software and community of people. It allows you to replace replace big tech monsters like Dropbox, Google docs, Hangouts, and more by hosting NextCloud yourself. You are in complete control of your data.
Self-hosted, easy to install and manage, reliable functionality, quality mobile apps.
Not much! I wish more of the apps/plugins were usable in the mobile app. Sometimes I run across occasional sync conflicts with the desktop apps, which can be resolved, but it could be a smoother and more intuitive process to fix.

Very quick start by simple deployment with Linux based installation. Was able to quickly roll it out on a pilot deployment.
Extensibility. The open source foundations of the product helps us to customize and innovate on the product base.
The available commercial pricing models should be more agile to compete with cloud scale EFSS solutions. If they could offer a pricing model to take this to consumer level (E.g. Dropbox alternative) with PAYG pricing this would be great.

It's like Dropbox that you control. Except it's also like Google Apps that you control. Or MS365. Or... And entirely brandable, for use with clients. Essentially the app approach and open ethos (source/development/community) allows both a great core technology and infinite extendability.
The notifications system still needs some work, although it gets better with each release.
