HipChat is an instant messaging app built for businesses. The team chat tool lets you share files and discuss tasks in real-time with colleagues, project collaborators and even clients through unlimited chatrooms. Administrator controls mean you can choose who has access to the secure network and what they can see.

HipChat instant messaging lets you share files, such as images and documents, instantly with your whole team through live streams. You can use @mentions to direct your conversations to the correct person, and use search to find the content you are looking for. HipChat also supports video calling and screen sharing.

HipChat can be used both inside and outside of the office with support for Mac, Windows, iOS, Android, and Linux devices. The app also supports notifications, custom emoticons and bots, animated GIFs, Instagram feeds, and Twitter notifications.

Due to HipChat being part of the Atlassian family, HipChat comes with numerous integrations, including for JIRA, Bitbucket, GitHub, Heroku, Zendesk, Mailchimp, and more. You can also choose to deploy HipChat on your own server.

 Glitch

Glitches often, during login or in use. I use this app daily to communicate with co-workers and management. There has been multiple times when it's taken 10+ minutes to load. Also when I try to enlarge the window it glitches and doesn't fully expand.

Alternatives to HipChat

GetApp Analysis

People pick up the telephone much less often in offices these days, but that doesn’t mean internal office communication has stopped altogether. Instead, professionals are relying on instant messaging applications to communicate about issues that impact their companies. HipChat is a secure messaging platform that lowers the barrier of communication for teams and allows for quicker, more actionable decision making.

Designed for teams of all sizes, HipChat goes beyond basic group chatting functionality, including tools for sharing files and looping colleagues into conversations when their input is needed. Faster than email and less time consuming than the telephone, group chats conducted through HipChat can happen anywhere at any time.

What is HipChat?

HipChat was developed to give teams a better way to communicate. The web-based solution offers a way for groups to work collaboratively in real-time, with integrations that allow users to aggregate all of their system notifications in one place. Teams that use HipChat are better able to stay on the same page, regardless of their physical locations. The application can be used on both mobile and desktop devices.

Unlike its competitors, HipChat offers multi-client integration, with native apps for Mac, Windows, Linux, Android, iOS, desktop and web. Complete chat histories are kept accessible, along with persistent links and file sharing. This ensures that nothing falls through the cracks when companies communicate primarily through HipChat.

Main Features

Group Chats

The primary reason why companies adopt HipChat is to implement the platform’s group chatting feature into their workflows. Most of the most important features of HipChat are related to group chats. For example, group chat rooms are a place where colleagues can communicate about ongoing issues privately. Chat rooms are searchable, and they include capabilities for video calling and screen sharing.

Start a group chat the next time you need to discuss a topic with your colleagues. Invite the colleagues you’d like to participate, and select the privacy levels for your room based on the topics you’re discussing. You can see who is present in a chat room at any time, and you can be a part of multiple group chats at once.

Archived Discussions

Chat histories are fully searchable with HipChat, which means users can go back and revisit past discussions at any point in the future. Every HipChat room is searchable by keyword. This includes both text and files, along with links.

Click the search button in the top right-hand corner of your chat room to perform a search. To review a complete chat history, click the “Browse chat history” tab next to the search tool. You can scroll through chat histories by day and delete certain messages if necessary.

Tagging Colleagues

HipChat utilizes the same tagging features as Twitter, enabling users to @mention colleagues to bring them into conversations. When you mention a colleague by name, making sure to include the @-symbol, HipChat notifies the colleague and invites the person to join the group chat.

Before you begin typing a message into the box at the bottom of the chat room you’re currently in, include the @-symbol and the name of the person you’re trying to reach. Without sending an email or placing a telephone call, you can reach out directly and loop that person in on the conversation. @mentions are a useful way to quickly alert colleagues when their opinions are wanted.

Sharing Files

Drag-and-drop file sharing allows HipChat users to pull files from their desktops directly into group chat rooms. Users can also drag-and-drop files from DropBox, email, or anywhere else online.

When you upload a file into a group chat room, a preview of the file shows up for everyone in the room to see. Your colleagues can download the file directly or view it within their browsers. Users aren’t required to be logged in to view the files you’ve uploaded. Rather, they are visible to anyone who has the associated link.

Integrations

HipChat integrates with more than 50 other tools, including Aha!, Alias, Codeship, JIRA, and Honeybadger, to name just a few. HipChat also has an API that users can utilize to create their own integrations.

Pricing

HipChat’s Basic Plan is free. With the Basic Plan, users get HipChat Plus for 30-days automatically upon signing up. After that time, HipChat Plus is $2 per user, per month. HipChat Plus comes with video and screen sharing.

Bottom Line

  • Enables teams to communicate through group chats
  • Users can loop colleagues into communications through @mentions
  • Archived chat rooms keep discussions ongoing
  • Created for teams of all sizes
  • Advanced features include video and screen sharing

Great to use, The only problem we do have with it is the Notifications not working consistently, If the notifications were to be pushed when offline Hipchat would be great, Overall it is so great to use for messaging, I use HipChat within my company and with my clients. Easy to Use; Not Too Shabby!

19/04/2017

We use HipChat for our real-time interoffice communications. We have group chats set up, and individuals can also chat among themselves. It's really great, though it's always embarrassing when you think you're in a private chat, and in reality, you're writing in the ENTIRE company's group chat! I do wish everyone had permissions to set up groups, so you could have a chat group for, say, the company kickball team rather than just formal work chat groups. And I'm really not a fan of the emoticons. But it's a breeze to use, and I'm a huge fan of having both visual and auditory notifications. I need to hear the tone alerting me to a new message, and I need to see that flashing yellow on my desktop with the red number reminding me I've forgotten about the tone I heard. It's great having both features, and being able to utilize both simultaneously. Overall, I'm a fan of HipChat.

Pros

Ease of Use

Cons

Only Admins can set up chat groups

Way easier than Slack

18/04/2017

We use HipChat as an agency. That way the whole team can be in on the conversation - and so much information and documentation that would otherwise clog up your email, can be transferred in a quick hip chat message. Different rooms can be created for different conversations (you can set the privacy levels and participants for each), and its easy to @message people to specifically notify them. HipChat follows a more chronological order than other app like Slack, which I feel makes it more easy to follow.

Pros

Easy to set permissions, easy to mention and notify people, good file sharing, great integrations (gifs, bots etc), available on desktop and mobile. A great way to keep track, without the emails!

Cons

Not many bad points! Sometimes if you're signed in on mobile, or have hip chat open on another device, it can be easy to miss a message but that's about it .

Excellent platform

17/04/2017

I've been using Hipchat for a couple of years, and it works pretty well. I love its integrations with other apps, like JIRA, Runscope, Bamboo and so on. Moreover, users can create public and private rooms, create tasks, polls, upload images, videos, and different kind of documents.

Great messaging app

14/04/2017

Our development team has used HipChat for over two years. We highly recommend it. Its interface is simple and very intuitive. You can create message groups by inviting multiple members to be aware of all the details of a particular project. You can also initiate messages one by one. If you use other Atlassian tools it can also be easily integrated. For example, in our case we use Jira so we can integrate the creation of issues so that they automatically generate messages in a group of HipChat.

Pros

Easy to use and configure. Integrates with other Atlassian products. Has messages history, attachments, and in the paid version has video chat that works great.

Cons

None so far.

Much more convenient than inter-office emails

13/04/2017

My company has many different departments in office and out in the field. We constantly need to communicate collaboratively about clients. HipChat makes it so much easy to have a quick conversation with multiple people within our company on the fly. Our outside reps are able to communicate via their mobile devices so they always feel connected. HipChat saves a tremendous amount of time with group chats...everyone stays on the same page. You can also load documents, website links, etc. into a hipchat conversation.
