HipChat is an instant messaging app built for businesses. The team chat tool lets you share files and discuss tasks in real-time with colleagues, project collaborators and even clients through unlimited chatrooms. Administrator controls mean you can choose who has access to the secure network and what they can see.

HipChat instant messaging lets you share files, such as images and documents, instantly with your whole team through live streams. You can use @mentions to direct your conversations to the correct person, and use search to find the content you are looking for. HipChat also supports video calling and screen sharing.

HipChat can be used both inside and outside of the office with support for Mac, Windows, iOS, Android, and Linux devices. The app also supports notifications, custom emoticons and bots, animated GIFs, Instagram feeds, and Twitter notifications.

Due to HipChat being part of the Atlassian family, HipChat comes with numerous integrations, including for JIRA, Bitbucket, GitHub, Heroku, Zendesk, Mailchimp, and more. You can also choose to deploy HipChat on your own server.

 Wishing for stronger features

I want to be able to edit my chats after I send them and not just with the s// feature. I wish I could change the display so it took up less real estate on my screen. Have used HipChat at work with my software development team, and while it does the job, it's not my favorite chat application out ...

Alternatives to HipChat

GetApp Analysis

People pick up the telephone much less often in offices these days, but that doesn’t mean internal office communication has stopped altogether. Instead, professionals are relying on instant messaging applications to communicate about issues that impact their companies. HipChat is a secure messaging platform that lowers the barrier of communication for teams and allows for quicker, more actionable decision making.

Designed for teams of all sizes, HipChat goes beyond basic group chatting functionality, including tools for sharing files and looping colleagues into conversations when their input is needed. Faster than email and less time consuming than the telephone, group chats conducted through HipChat can happen anywhere at any time.

What is HipChat?

HipChat was developed to give teams a better way to communicate. The web-based solution offers a way for groups to work collaboratively in real-time, with integrations that allow users to aggregate all of their system notifications in one place. Teams that use HipChat are better able to stay on the same page, regardless of their physical locations. The application can be used on both mobile and desktop devices.

Unlike its competitors, HipChat offers multi-client integration, with native apps for Mac, Windows, Linux, Android, iOS, desktop and web. Complete chat histories are kept accessible, along with persistent links and file sharing. This ensures that nothing falls through the cracks when companies communicate primarily through HipChat.

Main Features

Group Chats

The primary reason why companies adopt HipChat is to implement the platform’s group chatting feature into their workflows. Most of the most important features of HipChat are related to group chats. For example, group chat rooms are a place where colleagues can communicate about ongoing issues privately. Chat rooms are searchable, and they include capabilities for video calling and screen sharing.

Start a group chat the next time you need to discuss a topic with your colleagues. Invite the colleagues you’d like to participate, and select the privacy levels for your room based on the topics you’re discussing. You can see who is present in a chat room at any time, and you can be a part of multiple group chats at once.

Archived Discussions

Chat histories are fully searchable with HipChat, which means users can go back and revisit past discussions at any point in the future. Every HipChat room is searchable by keyword. This includes both text and files, along with links.

Click the search button in the top right-hand corner of your chat room to perform a search. To review a complete chat history, click the “Browse chat history” tab next to the search tool. You can scroll through chat histories by day and delete certain messages if necessary.

Tagging Colleagues

HipChat utilizes the same tagging features as Twitter, enabling users to @mention colleagues to bring them into conversations. When you mention a colleague by name, making sure to include the @-symbol, HipChat notifies the colleague and invites the person to join the group chat.

Before you begin typing a message into the box at the bottom of the chat room you’re currently in, include the @-symbol and the name of the person you’re trying to reach. Without sending an email or placing a telephone call, you can reach out directly and loop that person in on the conversation. @mentions are a useful way to quickly alert colleagues when their opinions are wanted.

Sharing Files

Drag-and-drop file sharing allows HipChat users to pull files from their desktops directly into group chat rooms. Users can also drag-and-drop files from DropBox, email, or anywhere else online.

When you upload a file into a group chat room, a preview of the file shows up for everyone in the room to see. Your colleagues can download the file directly or view it within their browsers. Users aren’t required to be logged in to view the files you’ve uploaded. Rather, they are visible to anyone who has the associated link.

Integrations

HipChat integrates with more than 50 other tools, including Aha!, Alias, Codeship, JIRA, and Honeybadger, to name just a few. HipChat also has an API that users can utilize to create their own integrations.

Pricing

HipChat’s Basic Plan is free. With the Basic Plan, users get HipChat Plus for 30-days automatically upon signing up. After that time, HipChat Plus is $2 per user, per month. HipChat Plus comes with video and screen sharing.

Bottom Line

  • Enables teams to communicate through group chats
  • Users can loop colleagues into communications through @mentions
  • Archived chat rooms keep discussions ongoing
  • Created for teams of all sizes
  • Advanced features include video and screen sharing

Great for Employee Collaboration

14/03/2017

Great for socializing with fellow coworkers.

Pros

When I started a new job at a company in Sacramento, we used HipChat to communicate. It was great for getting to know my fellow employees, and various departments used it to do things like organize sports teams.

Cons

Sometimes people would send important information via HipChat when it would've been better to send that via email.

Pros

This is a great chat service client. Similar to slack or any of the other instant messaging services, nothing special about it yet that i have seen. Can upload your own emojis and gifs to chat. One cool feature

Cons

None that I have seen so far. Have only used the web client so far and it works just fine. Desktop notifications are good too.

Doesn't Fare well In comparison to Slack

13/03/2017

I use both Slack and HipChat on a daily basis to communicate with different teams at my company. Hip Chat is very clearly overshadowed by Slack in functionality, usability, and general responsiveness.

Pros

Integrates with other Atlassian products

Cons

Mobile app is weak - logs me out randomly and is inconsistent with when I receive notifications (a huge problem since this is the point of the software) UI is clunky and hard to navigate, needs a huge overhaul to even begin to compete with Slack. Ability to easily create chats and group channels is clunky is not seamless. You must create a full room and invite people. Slack allows you to create group chats on the fly just by typing in names.

Not a big fan of hipchat...

13/03/2017

Pros

Being able to add custom emoticons is pretty cool. Complaints aside, the app does allow you to chat with colleagues, which accomplishes its main goal.

Cons

It seems like there are numerous server side issues because on many occasions we'll lose access to hipchat for an extended period of time. The mobile app isn't always consistent in showing which chats have new messages which can cause messages to be missed.

Nice for internal teams

13/03/2017

We use HipChat internally for our development team. It does a great job of keeping track of conversations and reduced the amount of meetings that we have. I also like the new bots that are coming out, both for fun and productivity.

Pros

Administered by company Admin, bots and history.

Cons

Cannot connect to other organizations or invite customers

EASY, INTUITIVE

12/03/2017

HIPCHAT IS EASY TO USE, AND HAS LOTS OF GREAT FEATURES. IT'S NOT QUITE AS ALL-ENCOMPASSING AS SLACK, BUT IT'S A PRETTY CLOSE SECOND. I'D DEFINITELY RECOMMEND IT.

Pretty good but hey, it's not slack.

12/03/2017

Just generally less fun and intuitive as Slack. They are clearly working hard to get there but usability is just not as effortless and enjoyable.

Pros

Does it's basic job well

Cons

Not so 'delightful' not as responsive/aware. Like the way slack sees you do something and says 'do you always want me to do it like that?'
