Business Chat

2018-02-08

Onsite and remote team communication through a chat application.

Pros

Has a nice clean user interface, not a lot of clutter. It's easy to share files, images, screenshots. I pretty much gets the job done for a chat application.

Cons

I prefer slack over this product.

Worked well but not quite as good as slack

2018-11-22

Pros

I loved how HipChat was integrated within our Atlassian offering at work which used every single day for our projects. The ability to openly ask questions and discuss each project within the dedicated channels is fantastic.

Cons

It's just not Slack unfortunately.

We used to use HipChat to fuel our team chat, but we switched to Slack and never went back.

It was simple.

Nice tool but loosing with competition!

2018-12-31

Pros

I used HipChat for around 2 years at a startup. We had a really good time with the product and were able to improve communication in the company.

Cons

With Slack coming out, everyone in our company jumped on to that right away.

Slack before Slack, probably before its time?

2018-11-03

Very good experience.

Pros

HipChat has almost all the same features of Slack. Looking back, it's really a slicked up version of IRC.

Cons

Ecosystem is smaller, not as many plugins as Slack has. Also the product recently was acquired by Slack and users will be migrated over.

HipChat is a great way to stay connected to your team

2018-01-23

Pros

We are currently using Slack but I have also been testing HipChat.

Cons

I do like the software, however, I find that it could use some more features. I would love to see task management and brainstorming features added.

Tried it out, could not leave Slack

2017-06-07

Integrations are good but Slack is still the king.

Pros

At the core, it is a good way to collaborate with your team. Easy to use and set up. Nice for integrating with other Atlassian products.

Doesn't Fare well In comparison to Slack

2017-03-13

I use both Slack and HipChat on a daily basis to communicate with different teams at my company.

Pros

Integrates with other Atlassian products

Cons

Mobile app is weak - logs me out randomly and is inconsistent with when I receive notifications (a huge problem since this is the point of the software) UI is clunky and hard to navigate, needs a huge overhaul to even begin to compete with Slack. Ability to easily create chats and group channels is clunky is not seamless.

Use Slack instead if you can afford it

2018-12-16

Experience has been mediocre - definitely would switch to Slack if it weren't so expensive.

Pros

HipChat is a good alternative to slack if you have a large team and need to save money.

Cons

Overall it becomes unreliable and does not perform well as the team scales. If you have more than ~200 users, expect to have issues if you use HipChat a lot. When we used it, we had an outage every other month or so, which was highly disruptive.

Great messaging app, but cross-platform functionality is subpar

2019-01-07

Overall, I like it and wish it wasn't being acquired by Slack.

Pros

I like how easy it is to find team members to communicate with, create and delete chat rooms as necessary, and uncluttered Hipchat is compared to their competition. My company loves using GIFs to express ourselves so the Giphy plug in, as well as other various plug ins available are great.

Cons

Notifications across different platforms aren't great. My phone never gets notifications of new messages for some reason. And other times when I do get the notification, when I open up the mobile application, view the message and close it, the bubble for the notification still persists.

Hipchat versus Slack

2018-11-29

Though you cannot go wrong picking Hipchat or Slack.

Simple chat, fun without needless bells and whistles

2018-06-25

Pros

Hipchat is, for me, a paired down version of Slack. Many different settings for various kinds of chat rooms with easy to understand distinctions, it's great software for when Slack is overkill.

Cons

Shortcut key mapping has gotten me in trouble a time or two. Because of how shortcuts are mapped by default, it can be a little too easy to application switch from the keyboard and end up sending something to a different room than intended.

Sometimes confusing but does the job

2019-03-26

We were using HipChat but HipChat was discontinued and we had to find a different solution.

Pros

The program serves the purpose it's meant to serve - I can communicate with my coworkers through chat and video which is nice. I work remotely so this is a necessary tool in my job. I like how you can paste images directly into the chat box. I also like how you can set your status to "Working Remotely" and it resets after a day - everyone always forgets to change their status back to normal, so this is a great little feature.

Cons

Occasionally the video sound doesn't work and we never had that problem with our previous software, HipChat (no longer in service).

Highly recommended!

Pros

Great for if you need to contact someone for a quick answer and you don't have to look for them in the office since the mobile app is so great to use too! Safe to send over important information to colleagues. Easy to set up a group chat. Donut is great for having employees to get to know each other over a coffee. Pros

I like that slack has tons of integrations that make is easy/fun to use. We're able to integrating everything from our lunch delivery site (Caviar) to our product road map application. It's easy to create various groups for every topic, and I love that you can direct message 2+ people at once.

Comparable to HipChat

2018-12-23

Due to this, we dumped Atlassian's HipChat app and moved to onboard the free Slack option.

Pros

I like the way the software organizes "work spaces" which is 1 step higher than competing software like HipChat. Integrations are easy to install if you have admin, and the free platform is more than adequate for teams that don't require logging messages.

Cons

There's a trade off for being more youthful and fun when it comes to integrations, and there's no Suite that Slack is currently a part of similarly to HipChat which is part of the Atlassian Suite.

Ease of use. Intuitive design Linking with Jira to display tickets

Cons

There isn't a dark theme, not a major con, but I would like to see the option to customize the view to allow for dark themes.

I miss Slack!

2019-01-14

I really enjoyed using Slack as it was a more interactive and clean way to use chat!

Pros

Now that I've used other chat services (ex: HipChat) I really enjoyed a few things: Users are automatically alphabetized You can delete and edit chat lines

Cons

The "mark unread" feature is not prominent and you have to know about the right click. I found a lot of users "lost" messages after they read them because they didn't know about this feature.

Slack: a premium worth paying?

2018-12-31

Ultimately, it will depend on the needs of your users. Everyone hates to change and if Slack is already established, you will not be popular forcing people to make a transition. If there is no elephant in the room yet, it's worth considering all your options to deduplicate your services and your spend.

Pros

You can simply integrate more of your services into Slack than Teams or HipChat.

Cons

However, Slack does not have the option for on-premises hosting like HipChat. And you may already be paying for Microsoft Teams as a part of your Office 365 cost.

Slack Review

2017-11-07

Pros

We transitioned from Hipchat and the transition was seamless.

Cons

Although I only use Slack in the most basic sense as a messenger, I found it really irritating that all my channels were sorted alphabetically.

My favorite messaging platform

2019-03-13

Pros

I have used several different messaging platforms (teams, HipChat, chat) and this is by far the best.

Cons

My only complaint is the cost of the product

Slack Review

2018-11-27

I have enjoyed using slack and recommend others use it as well. It integrates well with Jira, Asana, and many other 3rd party software options.

Pros

Works just like other instant messaging services such as hipchat and discord.

Cons

Some features were harder to figure out such as how to use the colon and then the name of an emoji, but if I remember correctly, there was an onboarding tour.

Everything you need to know

Confused about the difference between HipChat and Slack?

HipChat is a communication solution that offers group chats, direct messaging, and voice and video conferencing capabilities. It allows you to mark chat messages as decisions made and assign tasks to team members through notifications.

Slack is a collaboration tool that organizes conversations in different channels and supports file sharing and voice and video calling.

To save you time and effort when comparing the two, we've put together a chart below. Based on the vendor websites and on user reviews of HipChat and Slack, here's how some of the key features stack up:

Conferencing: Paid Slack plans allow video and voice calling with up to 15 participants and options to mute participants, share the screen, draw on the screen, and share screen controls. HipChat supports 1-to-1 and group video chats of up to 20 users along with the ability to share the screen and mute and unmute participants.

Customized notifications: Slack provides mobile, email, desktop, and badge notifications, with the ability to set keyword notifications and "Do Not Disturb" hours and to manage notifications on a per-channel basis. HipChat offers email, text, push, and in-app notifications and provides an option to disable notifications.

Search functionality: Slack can search users, channels, words or phrases, and emojis. Slack's advanced search options also support partial word searches and deep searches that check the content within shared files. HipChat has limited search features and lets users search by @mentions.

File sharing and document management: Slack integrates with document storage platforms including Google Drive, Box, and Dropbox to store files. It offers a preview of the files shared and indexes them to improve searchability. HipChat stores shared files on the users' Network File System (NFS) servers and allows admins to disable file-sharing rights. A preview of all file types is not available in HipChat.

Integrations: Slack integrates with over 500 analytics, customer support, HR, accounting, project management, and other applications, while HipChat integrates with Atlassian products and with over 200 other products.
