What users say

It's so comprehensive and I can't wait until I can save up the money to buy the program. I recommended it to my girls to help them with school papers because I found it so helpful for my own writing.
And since they offer a lifetime pricing, I would say it a very good investment for anyone in serious writing.

ProWritingAid review. Notes from a small island (in the south pacific)

Reviewed 3 years ago

I've used the premium version for 18 months and have based my comments on my experience in that time. I use it both for work and for some of the creative writing I do. I'm a massive fan of using technology to improve how I work and ProWritingAid is right up there as one of the most useful tools I use. It makes a significant difference to how long it takes me to write a document. I write fewer iterations...

Pros

I like the fact that I can use it everywhere. It's available in Word, Chrome, and Google Docs. There's even a desktop application. I like the real-time checker that identifies the quick fixes. But the real value is in the deeper reports. Don't be put off by the number of them - my advice is to have find out which ones you find most useful. My favourites are: 1. Thesaurus report, which lets me quickly find better words to use. 2. Readability report, which focuses me on areas that I can improve. 3. Sticky sentences report, which helps me get straight to the point. Once you know which ones you use most, you can combine them (it's called a Combo report) and with one click, you've got detailed analysis of your writing.

Cons

All software has pros and cons. While ProWritignAid is no different, it is worth saying that they do seem focused on continual improvement. My main criticisms over the last 18 months have been: 1. No integration with Google Docs - this has now been released and works well. 2. It can be daunting how much it tells you about your writing but this is necessary - writing is complex. The more you use it, the better it gets. 3. When I was using the free version, the 500-word limit caught me out a few times. It's not an issue for any premium users, however.

ProWritingAid is ideal for Professionals and Students alike

Reviewed 3 years ago

Not a bad thing to say about ProWritingAid thus far. It's inexpensive, and has helped tune my writing style so I'm faster and more confident about it. With all the tweaking options available (and plug-ability), you're almost never without it. That said, Grammarly has its purpose, and I'd perhaps consider keeping free Grammarly around for its browser-based tool. While I'd advocate using both, if only choosing one I'd opt for ProWritingAid.

Pros

I love how ProWritingAid plugs into MS Word and Scrivener, so both authors and other professionals can utilize the power of this service. The price is very affordable, and the features aren't matched by any competitors to my knowledge. It's great to also 'tune' PWA to your writing style, so it doesn't offer irrelevant suggestions. Another cool feature is Plagiarism checks, so if you hire blog content writers, you can check to see if their content is unique. The same is useful for students who want to check their work against internet sources.

Cons

While ProWritingAid is great, for some platforms that requires short snippets of content like e-commerce product pages, you may be better off with Grammarly. This is because PWA has more of a 'style' focus rather than 'grammar' focus. Perhaps the ultimate approach is to start with PWA to get your writing style mastered offline, then use Grammarly for browser-based usage when writing emails and short snippets of online content (to not get style suggestions where its superfluous).

ProWritingAid Will Make You More Than Pro Writer!

Reviewed 3 years ago

It helped me a great deal to improve my style. I initially used Grammarly and just of curiosity, I tried ProWritingAid -- only to learn that software can go beyond grammar and spelling. I feel like I grew as a writer by using ProWritingAid. However, it is a bit of pricey and perhaps some different grades/options can be introduced to satisfy variety of users.

Pros

ProWritingAid contains a number of features that will not only instantly correct and suggest alternative wording but that will gradually improve your overall writing skills. Unlike the popular competition, ProwritingAid has a more comprehensively take on writing, it goes beyond just correcting grammar and spelling but help you enhance your style as well. It provides a number of reports that can help you track the improvement of your writing skills. And of top of that, it works in Google Docs -- where all of my writing takes place. :)

Cons

It would be nice to have extensions for a variety of browsers, including Safari. But honestly, what I like the least about it is a price!

The main tool I've used for editing and proofreading for years. Better than any other I've tried.

Reviewed a year ago

Can't life without it. I've had PWA longer than any other program because it does the most for the best price.

Pros

It does so much for such a reasonable price. I love the reports. It makes me a better writer with all the explanations it provides. It's like having a writing tutor with me all the time.

Cons

It's wonderful that there's so many reports you can run, but it also gets a little confusing sometimes.

ProWritingAid is Only Worth For Fiction Writers

Reviewed 3 months ago

This tool is worth the effort assuming that you compose fiction broadly. It's the best grammar checker for fiction journalists as a result of its local help for Scrivener and extra composing reports which other sentence structure checkers don't offer. It's likewise worth the effort assuming that you esteem extra bits of knowledge about your composition, for instance, word-decision, similar sounding word usage, and so on. In the event that you don't compose fiction widely, it is as yet a helpful grammar checker given it fits around your composing work process. Indeed it has a few peculiarities, however, it's a reasonable and exact sentence structure checker for most writers

Pros

Essential writing tool for fiction writers, in-depth review of your writing, great value for money, low CPU consumption, no monthly fee, and reports are very much insightful.

Cons

Slower than other grammar checkers, the free version has its limitations, no Android version of the software, it gives unnecessary suggestions to improve, not integrated with Google Docs, and reports can be confusing and overwhelming.

Perfect for Fiction and Non-Fiction

Reviewed 2 years ago

I've used ProWritingAid for publishing both fiction and non-fiction articles and books. The software handles both extremely well. Features to cover all modes of writing are easily identified and easy to use. The on-screen explanations of the software with additional help screens help to maintain a focus during editing. Functionality in other programs, like Firefox and other programs, is an added value. (PWA just prompted me correctly to add a comma after programs.) Excellent value for the money. Saves money by creating a well edited document if other professional editing us required.

Pros

Excellent and wide-ranging editing and document analysis features.

Cons

While using one feature of the editing software on a large segment of copy, the software will jump among the sub-features. I edit using one sub-feature at a time, progressing from start to end in the segment before shifting to another sub-section. The jumps to other, previously finished sub-section, interrupts smooth editing.

Best grammar software in the industry! Grammarly can't compete!

Reviewed 3 years ago

I'm a self-published author running a small press and I couldn't afford to be in business without the help of ProWritingAid's excellent software. I depend on it to deliver clean, readable drafts each and every time I publish a new novel.

Pros

I absolutely love the flexibility and platform support that ProWritingAid offers. No matter which platform or software you use to get your writing done, ProWritingAid supports it — and does it well! When taken feature for feature, comparatively Grammarly and other similar writing software can't compete. And did I mention the price? A lifetime subscription is worth its weight in gold for anyone who considers themselves a professional writer, no matter the medium.

Cons

There are some bugs in the software, and they vary depending on which platform you're using, but they're easy to overlook given the overall value proposition that ProWritingAid offers. I wouldn't use anything else.

Best editing software on the market

Reviewed 3 years ago

I signed up for a ProWritingAid trial after reading a review about it. I'd been a paying client with Grammarly for years, but my experience with PWA during the trial period alone made me a convert, and I haven't looked back since. Fantastical product!

Pros

ProWritingAid is an incredibly comprehensive editing software. How many of its editing categories you look at and implement is up to you and how much time you have available, but they're always there. The software stands head and shoulders above competitors in this regard. It's also, for the budget-conscious, a lot more affordable. True value for money - the best investment anyone who works with words in any capacity can make!

Cons

Not sure if it's a glitch, but sometimes when I accept an edit, then undo, it's unable to. Also, it doesn't catch every single grammar mistake (9 times out of 10 it does, though), so I'd advise to have the free version of Grammarly installed as a backup.

Best program for editing

Reviewed a year ago

Not only does this do a great job of highlighting a large variety of issues, there are also explanations and consistent usage has helped authors learn better writing habits in their future manuscripts. This company also has excellent customer service and continues to improve and add to the software. They also have an option for an extremely affordable lifetime purchase. By far better than other popular programs.

Pros

The sheer number of options and variety of checkers in this program are incomparable. Absolutely the best program to use to prepare your writing. Two of my favorite features are the repeats and echoes. It does an excellent job of identifying repetitive phrases and words, and the same words used too closely together. It's harder for a human editor to pick up on that as consistently as a computer and in this specific area, I feel it does a better job than a person. Obviously no program can replace a human, but this one does a fabulous job of trying.

Cons

I really have a hard time thinking of something bad to say about this software. I think there can be some improvements made in style choices and the thesaurus, but they aren't bad. I just feel like maybe they can be upgraded slightly.

Supports better content, faster (and cheaper)

Reviewed 3 years ago

I'm a business writer (marketing consultant), author-publisher, and editor, so ProWritingAid is an essential part of my business. I absolutely work with human editors for big projects like books, but on the day-to-day content and short fiction where I'm on a tighter turn-around and production budget, ProWritingAid is a cost-effective and efficient way to clean up mistakes and add polish. As an editor/proofreader myself, I also use it to add value for my clients—ProWritingAid helps flag more potential corrections than I can catch in a single pass while freeing me up to keep a closer eye on the style and logic side of things.

Pros

My favourite feature is the overused words check. It's really useful to have grammatical errors and typos flagged as well, but one of the hardest things for me to catch when self-editing is too many uses of the same words in proximity. The automatic check helps me clean up content and get it out the door quickly, whether it's my own projects or as an editor.

Cons

I have older MS Word software, so it's not compatible and copying to and from the web editor can be a little clunky.

ProWritingAid is an essential tool for serious fiction writers

Reviewed 5 months ago

ProWritingAid is an essential writing tool for fiction writers. It instantly makes your writing better and helps improve slow pacing, sentence variety, emotion, dialogue, as well as the usual grammar/spelling, it can find find cliches, and detect plagiarism. You can even create your own customized style guide. It is very affordable and worth the money. For blogging, I still use Grammarly and have an annual subscription, as I find it better for non-fiction. Hopefully one day I will switch all of my editing to ProWritingAid and be able to cancel my Grammarly subscription. If I could only recommend one, I'd say go with ProWritingAid for fiction, or Grammarly for non-fiction writing.

Pros

I really like that they have a lifetime one-time payment option rather than only a monthly or yearly subscription such as Grammarly. It is great value for money. The software is very versatile and can be used for any type of writing, whether it is fiction, business writing, academic or even blogging and content writing. ProWritingAid also seamlessly integrates with other writing software such as Scrivener, Final Draft, and Google Docs.

Cons

The interface isn't as nice as some other software, and the passive voice tool only identifies passive voice, instead of offer suggestions for what to change. Also, with so many reports and tools to select from, it can be a bit overwhelming at times.

A Great Alternative to Other Grammar Checkers

Reviewed 3 years ago

Prowritingaid is a decent alternative to other grammar checker programs out there, and I feel they have attractive pricing.

Pros

1) They offer a lifetime pricing option which I prefer over a monthly recurring bill. 2) I am a heavy user of Scrivener, and Prowritingaid works with Scrivener projects. 3) The seamless thesaurus feature helps me to craft stronger points and sentences.

Cons

1) I feel they should offer a monthly plan, their smallest package is an annual plan. 2) Using Prowritingaid, I'm always receiving suggestions to add commas in places where it's not needed, and there is no way to tell the software to ignore this.

Works good in combination with Grammarly

Reviewed 4 years ago

I'm a fiction writer and this is a great tool for finding mistakes your own eyes can't see. Having an objective grammar/cliche/structure checking tool like this is (IMHO) an essential part of the writing process before hiring a human editor.

Pros

- The 'Style', 'Overused', 'Sticky' and 'Cliche' checkers are highly helpful - The interface is simple, although not perfect - Allows you to check things individually, or all together by using the 'Real Time' mode - One time purchase license (Lifetime) is a great option to have

Cons

- No dark mode offered on Mac (as of 12/2018) - Still doesn't catch some things that Grammarly does (and visa-versa) - Pricey for what it does, even at the Lifetime purchase level. I think the value should be a bit closer to the $100 mark - Sometimes suggests changes that are unnecessary, or miss marks grammar as incorrect when it is, in fact, correct.

Ease of academic editing

Reviewed 3 years ago

I routinely submit academic papers to peer review so it has been a very useful and cost effective tool to ensure errors do not proceed to the referees.

Pros

The merits of this software are seamless integration into Word, google docs, and online whenever I need to edit no matter the place. The highlighted functions for grammar and style are easy to implement and do not impede my writing.

Cons

The only aspect I like least about the software is sometimes lengthy times to run different functions in long documents. This is easily remedied by selecting smaller portions of text. I just get impatient.

Not a lot of trust that it works

Reviewed 2 years ago

I was very happy with the trial and bought the yearly subscription. The cost vs Grammarly is significantly less and appeared to work close enough to as well. After I started working in it I noticed it didn't catch nearly as much as Grammarly. It will still be helpful for emails and its not even in the league of Grammarly. Yes Grammarly is the big player but their cost is hard to swallow for my simple business email corrections.

Pros

-Yearly Cost vs main competitor -Easy to install -Works with web browsers & Microsoft outlook -Customer support

Cons

-Missed too many mistakes -It always suggests very simple things that need to be corrected. The AI isn't smart enough, yet, to see it's a closing and not an incomplete sentence. It gives you the ability to ignore the rule, but will it miss a true error then?

I had most of the first draft completed before a friend turned me onto the software. I decided what the heck try the free trial. I can say with certainty I will be purchasing the subscription. Not only does it help with spelling and grammar. it allows me to run reports to see if i have used the same words repeatedly it also has an amazing thesaurus these are just a few of the features i have used so far

Cons

Im only using the free software right now until I get paid so I am missing alot of the functions on the software. that is the only con i can think of at this point. I mean to me it is expensive but it is worth the money.

Good application. It has a flat price for the year.

Pros

I like this program more than the others I have used. The explanations to why an error has appeared are more clear, and it gives easy fixes for them. Also, the recommendations on word choice and style are good. It can pick up the purpose of the writing and change the language from the perspective of your goals.

Cons

The plagiarism feature is not included in the yearly package, the cost is extra.
