Pros
Solid programs & periodic updates. Good customer support on basic issues. Support contracts are reasonably priced.

Cons
Needs lots of customization which requires a lot of outside vendor help. This causes the total cost of ownership to be high.

Sage works well for general contractors. Great for building work and some lump contracts, but we do some projects that have unit prices and it is difficult to change estimates/Budgets. We have customized job sheets in order to track changes in units based on bid time and final quantities. The system does not add dollar changes to prices in change orders/prices.

Pros
Job Cost is important for our financial means of to track costs. The payroll program works great for certified payrolls and paying different rates for job tasks. General Ledger produces easily readable FS/BS for yearly usage. Cash Management is a great tool for bank reconciliation. Accounts Receivables is great for tracking billings and payments on job contracts.

Cons
Customizing some reports have been a challenge.

Pros
Their functionality is good. Pricing seems fair. It does the job compared to other expensive software. We have been using it for more than a year and if it is not good then I don't know what is.

Cons
Some parts need improvement, first is a nicer user interface for the consumer and the address book needs to be easier to access and send emails to groups.

Pros
Our current Sage/timberline is very user friendly. The cost is reasonable and affordable. For small construction firms it works as good as other software out there. Its features including accounting, production management, project management, procurement, and reporting and other tools.

Cons
It's a good software in the states but can be hard to use in other countries because some of the consultants might be expensive including reports and source deduction. The reports. You can filter on anything which is nice but you can’t add any row (easily).

Sage is the software we utilize for all of our PM/project accounting and budgeting tracking. This program allows us to enter budget, commitments, costs and track and report on these with up to date information and integrate with our other PM software for a more streamlined workflow.

Pros
For the price, this can't be beat. It can do all of the same things as the more expensive software out there. This communicates with our online PM software, and our invoice review and approval software to streamline all aspects of our project management work flow and improve productivity.

Cons
Not the most user friendly. It doesn't have the fancy icons that other software does, but once you past that first layout learning curve and develop any custom reporting it is easy to understand and does everything you need.

Coming from Quickbooks this is a living nightmare. Simple items like the ability to print a deposit slip do not exist. While it allows for a breakdown to figure out your real per job/customer cost, the number of steps to get this data are time consuming and drawn out. You must have accounting knowledge to use this and plenty of time. Possibly designed for large companies that have dedicated people to perform each of these tasks. The service software is not bad and is one of the few that completely integrates the ticketing into the system as opposed to a separate app. It is currently not compatible with Microsoft Server 2016 and you must have Windows 2012R2 for the most recent version.

Pros
All your info in one place. Integrated software to take your project from takeoff estimate to Final billing. Plenty of forms can be set up including Notice to Owner, etc. Instant scheduling for techs a plus and the ability to bill as soon as they complete the job.

Cons
Price, both time and money. Everything must be customized. Very few standard forms/documents/report. Difficult to operate.

We are a $30M A&E/Construction company.

Pros
Decent functionality once you get it working. Price to function seems good. I have a hard time saying anything else good. If you can live with the cost of frustration, you will probably eventually say its worth it. I've used it for 10 years!

Cons
Sage provides almost "ZERO" support. Don't let them lie to you. I have used this product for over 10 years and my level of frustration remains very high. They will not support you after the software/conversion is done. You get pushed to a very few, custom Crystal Report writers who are incredibly overloaded. So all the promise of great dashboards, custom reports (which you have to have! For your own business!) is for naught. Just add 6 months to your process which is absolutely not an exaggeration. Let's just say it like it is. After the sale, Sage does not care about you.

The only benefit can think about using Sage is the money I could make building add-ons and consulting opportunities it provides because it lacks the basics. Financial reporting is a joke.

Pros
It works. It's fairly cheap. Not that buggy. I assume this is so because you haven't hired a team of developers since the late 90s. I'd bet the head of the user experience if you have one, has been ready to retire for the last ten years.

Cons
You have not put any effort into improving the product. For example how hard would it be to put a link from the transaction inquiry to the entry batch by clicking a button. The standard reporting is terrible. Have you ever asked what an accounting team needs? Also, in 2021 one should be able to copy and paste into your tables (e.g. JEs). Another example of how sloppy your user experience is when you close the books for the month, someone has to open the prior month one at a time. We have 90 companies. I had to program a python script to do this! I also use an Oracle product for financial reporting.

In deciding to purchase this software, you need to determine your real commitment level. You can use an easily implemented software such as Quickbooks, but you'll need to manually enter a great deal of estimates and information. The implementation and training is costly - be sure and get the total price of all the software modules that you will need in addition to the estimated cost of implementation and training.

Pros
I like that in general you are able to import tables from other software or ones created in Excel rather than either not having history or having to manually enter it. There are many very sophisticated modules to help you manager your business. There are awesome video's with lessons that you can use (over and over) for a period of time to learn each module broken down step by step. The job cost is able to import estimates created in Timberline (SAGE) Estimating, another very sophisticated program. From those estimates you can actually create purchase orders for items estimated, and email them directly to your vendors. Very slick if the program is set up correctly.

Cons
This is a complicated system and not for the average AP person or Controller/Accountant. You will more than likely need to hire an expert to train and walk you through implementation. The reports are rarely exactly what you want, so you either have to pay the expert to change them or to learn to change them yourself. The whole implementation process is lengthy - there is a learning curve.

Review of Sage 300 Construction and Real Estate

Used daily for less than 6 months
Reviewed 2017-01-19
Review Source: Software Advice

Our company has been using Sage 300 Construction and Real Estate since 2000. We like that the different applications work so well together and cover the needs of our business for Job Cost, Accounts Payable, Cash Management, Payroll, Inventory, Purchasing, Billing and Accounts Receivable, and General Ledger. There are other applications such as Estimating, Equipment, Contracts, Document Management, My Assistant, Report Designer, etc., that are available as well. It includes Security Administration so that tasks are allowed to certain users or certain roles. The Payroll can handle multiple states, unions and certified payroll. The applications are flexible and offer a variety of ways they can be setup so they may be customized to your business needs. The support is great and Sage continues to meet the changing needs of the times, such as the recent ACA reporting requirements and new operating systems.

Pros
We really like Report Designer which allows us to modify the "canned reports" or create our own reports in a format we'd like to see.

Cons
It's expensive to purchase, but over the long run, it's been worth it. Not crazy about Desktop.
