StarChapter Features In Depth

Content Management

With StarChapter, organizations can choose from ten different layouts that can be customized by StarChapter’s in-house graphic designer based on color scheme, logo, branding, or national organization specifications. Each layout is suitable for the kind of features membership associations typically need on their website. To provide a good user experience, each layout features responsive web design, meaning it is optimized for whatever size and type of device you view the website on.

Behind this, is a built-in content management system (CMS) that is specifically tailored for non profits where you can easily upload newsletters, create events, and add member spotlights. This area of the admin panel is not just for written content, there is also the ability to place logos, manage ads from sponsors, and work with design and layout of each piece of content. You can edit different webpages and create new ones easily without previous knowledge of coding and website design.

Membership management

Boards change, members move on, and new members join. An issue any professional trade association or local chapter faces is keeping this member list up to date, and ensuring that all contact details are correct. Hosting an up-to-date member directory on the website is a main benefit of joining the organization in the first place, thjat’s why for volunteers to work off spreadsheets creates more problems than it solves.

With specific member access, every member can edit their own details, saving the webmaster (if you have one) valuable time. You can also manage non members, as well as create groups for different types of members, and easily search within these groups. StarChapter’s system updates the information in real time, meaning that any other part of the system that uses this information (such as email newsletters), will always have the most up-to-date details. Each chapter can also create customized fields, which they would like members to have to fill out.

Event registration and meeting management

Getting together in meetings is a huge source of revenues for any nonprofit organization. Some events are center around discussing issues, networking, welcoming new members, or interacting socially. It’s important that as many people show up to these meetings and events as possible. To create meetings, member organizations can choose from pre-built, industry-specific templates, or set up (or copy) templates of their own. Information about which groups of members to invite is pulled from the membership data, which is updated in real time. This way, event organizer can invite people based on their affiliated group, no need to copy and paste from excel or other systems.

Through the meeting feature, organizations can see the guest list, the fees collected, and group attendees according to members and guests. There are options to print badges, email attendees, create reports, process payments, manually add guest registrations, and track attendance at the entrance. Events and meetings are automatically removed from the site when they have already happened, ensuring your website is always up to date.

Email communications

To improve member engagement and grow your chapter, it’s important to regularly communicate with members between events or communicate announcements as they occur. This is an area where a lot of organizations struggle due to out-of-date information, poor branding, technical issues, and inability to manage their lists. StarChapter’s email manager lists all the different emails that have been sent in the past, with reports around how many have been opened or bounced. Each chapter can schedule emails and opt to send them on a recurring basis, for example your regular monthly email that keeps members informed on upcoming events. StarChapter also comes with industry-specific templates such as happy hour networking events, board get togethers, golf outing, and new member welcome days.

All emails are branded according to an organization’s logo and website, ensuring consistency and professionalism throughout all communication. Just as important as having the right email look and feel, is sending it to the right group of people. Integrated with the membership data, you can choose which group of people to send to, such as a people who have registered but are not members, or members who have registered but have yet paid for the event. There is also the ability to build a survey, for example one after an event in a timely manner, which you can filter only to send to attendees, as well as automate emails, such as welcoming new members when they join. The data for this comes from the central membership management portal and the meeting management area, making email creation very quick and easy.

Easy to use and affordable

Database information, reports are limited but its better than nothing, which is what we had before.

Pros

Ease of use, ability to get a nicely designed website, database membership list upload and event management.

Cons

Limited email design capacity and metrics, limited ability to make changes to live events to tickets- if you have a change you have to recreate the ticket- very frusturating, the newsletter and emails are very hard to update and send.

Top of the line association management

Star Chapter does it all for each of my chapters; membership management, event management, communications, online payments and reporting.

Pros

I like Star Chapter because it provides a comprehensive association management system that is effective, efficient, and affordable.

Cons

There are a few added features I have asked for and hope will be implemented in the near future, such as scheduling of email distributions based on specific dates and event invitations that include "Yes" and "No" buttons with tracking of member responses so they don't receive invitation reminders if they have already indicated they cannot attend an event.

My overall experience is best described as challenging because the interface is not intuitive and this characterization would also apply to others in our organization.

Pros

The best aspect of StarChapter is that it is an all-in-one platform to create and track event registrations and memberships while also enabling us to send emails to our database.

To help alleviate this problem, we have requested the ability for automatic renewals which is not available at this time.

Super easy way to manage your member association

We also have streamlined our meeting and conference management and payment systems and can see at-a-glance who is registered and how the meeting is tracking.

Pros

The best feature is the meeting management system.

Cons

Some of the interfaces sometimes feel a tiny bit slow and may not be as intuitive as I'd like but really it is a very simple, great looking, professional system.

Useful tool for Chapter management

Overall, it’s a vast improvement from how we were managing our chapter. However, there are definitely parts that could be better.

Pros

New member sign ups and membership renewals are a breeze, we are able to link to a payment gateway and accept payment directly though or website, and best of all, members can update their contact information at any time.

Cons

The reporting function is lacking by not being able to include all data that we want.

Great Product

Prior to Starchapter we did a lot of things manually such as keeping a current list of members and emails, creating and sending emails, membership renewals, and some types of memberships had to be manually maintained.

Pros

Templates available to help with implementation, software features that significantly improved administrative efficiency with communication, meeting and renewal reminders, maintaining current email lists, summary reports on the status of our chapter.

Cons

Implementation had some issues with interfacing with our credit card processor, which were eventually resolved.

Pros

It provides all features/tasks in one software. Reports providing attendance, profits etc.

Cons

There's numerous steps to completing a task, revisions of different kinds are not in the same screens where things were created, all pages look the same no matter what category is being used (no color coding, no differentiation for easier learning), and a serious lack of graphics.

All the features we need in one place

When there is something we can't figure out ourselves, we can look up how to solve our problem using the extensive tutorials and guides or contact the friendly and responsive help team.

Pros

Easy to use, lots of documentation to help you figure out how to make changes,

Cons

Guests that have registered for our events are listed as Attended automatically even before the event has taken place. it should just say "registered" or "paid" and then maybe during the event there should be an interface to check people in live to say if they attended or were a no-show. more ways to track event participation statistics and demographics.

Great - full featured and complete.

Pros

Everything else is done through starchapter, planning & managing events, newsletters, email notifications, member activity tracking, - its great.

Cons

The only negative is that the new version was rolled out before the documentation was ready. But the system is so intuitive that it wasn't an issue.

StarChapter review: It met our requirements

We needed to move to a website with more back office functionality including e-commerce and e-mail and membership management. StarChapter does that very well once implemented

Pros

I liked the integration capabilities.

Cons

The implementation team on our side are all tech savvy, but not with StarChapter so learning how it was set up took more time than needed because seeing the bigger picture of the design was missing in the training.
