Pros

It is one of the amazing application which is cloud-based and enables working smartly. It is a great tool that aids in better working for learning.
The ease of signing and viewing all the assignments that are due or coming up. I was very impressed with how easy it was to get the hang of the features and maneuver around getting assignments done.
I like how once you create a template for your classes, it is easy to repeat and reuse this for future classes. I also like how all course documents are easy to link and integrate to your home pages.

Pros

Overall, my experience has been great. Their customer service team is super helpful when you need them and the platform is very familiar to a lot of other bloggers and online business owners.
Overall, I love creating content with this site. If you have questions, they can help you and help you figure it out.
Incredible customer service, drip content, beautiful platform, awesome reporting, great editing features, and a bunch of integrations.

Cons

As a student this can be confusing and frustrating as I'm constantly searching for the information I need until I learn the instructor's organizational style.
As a parent, it was difficult to understand where some items were but I feel that was user error and not the platform.
Canvas does NOT have much customization as a user, which is a major downside to me.

Cons

More worrying at the time of writing is that the platform seems to suffer occasional downtime, most significantly on Black Friday, which will have inevitably lost course creators money.
No autosave of your work, I lost hours to a system glitch where you press enter and it just deletes your course text and there's no autosave to backup to.
The pricing of this program makes it lack feasibility for my school or classroom.

Canvas: good teaching software

Reviewed 2 years ago

I used Canvas to teach an introductory accounting course in college.

Pros

Canvas had all of the features you need to effectively organize and teach a college course, including content, quizzes, and messaging.

Cons

Sometimes it was confusing how to post content for students to see, and the gradebook was really annoying because each assignment was its own column, leading to a lot of scrolling right by the end of the semester.

Teaching in the wake of the Coronavirus

Reviewed a year ago

I would not be able to remote teach without it! Thankful we have Canvas!

Pros

I am a HS Art teacher, and I simply cannot imagine being able to teach my students without Canvas. It's been only a few weeks, and I've been able to get them to do their artwork remotely and emailing me photos of their work through the program.

Cons

While I'm able to do so much through the program, the functionality could be streamlined... for example, if I publish a module, everything within the module should be published as well. As of now, one has to publish everything individually. Email could be streamlined as well.

Pros

I like that the software allows u to access every app or program needed to virtually teach students as well as the access to be able to allow the actual teacher to access all screens of students in show a PowerPoint or basically write in. A chalkboard in still physically teach a curriculum

Cons

What I least like about the program is that you Don’t receive the proper training to initially access the program and virtually teach students I believe that the middle straighter’s in or the company should a offer at least a weeks training on using the program

Canvas for Learning

Reviewed a year ago

I teach secondary students using Canvas. It's a great tool to allow students to interact with each on an assignment and provide feedback to each other.

Pros

I liked that the software reminded me of Facebook. I think that the students enjoyed the engagement and being able to post and respond to each other.

Cons

The one thing that I liked least about the software, is that I found it difficult to sometimes upload information to the feed.

Accessible Grading and Class Management on the Cloud!

Reviewed a year ago

My experience with Canvas I would describe as very intuitive. It's teaching software that doesn't make the teacher change how they teach, but helps them in teaching.

Pros

I most like how easily accessible the software is. It's very customizable; you can modify different assignments for different students for more effective learning.

Cons

Because of how many features there are, it can be easy to miss out on some of what the software offers. Schools do tutorials on it, but there's just so much there.

A Comprehensive Educational Platform

Reviewed 2 months ago

Comprehensive, covers everything and gets the job done. Easily adaptable to most online-friendly users, and has adequate resources to teach non-tech friendly users how to navigate on the basic level.

Pros

TONS of features - anything you can think of for setting up your 'virtual' classroom is available or can be adjusted to work. Platform is responsive to user input and regularly provides upgrades to fit product demands. Can swap easily between student and professor view, to allow for adjustments and changes without publishing.

Cons

It doesn't always intuitively make sense how to enable/set up these options. The learning curve is a little steep, especially for teachers used to in-person learning environments only. Customer support and workshops are available to teach about features and options, but you have to put yourself out there to self-learn.

CANVAS

Canvas for Digital Literacy

Reviewed 2 years ago

Canvas has been a blessing for technology teachers who cannot rely on textbooks and are forever creating their own curriculum from scratch. Canvas allows one to teach without necessarily inventing the wheel.

Pros

Canvas has a direct link to Creative Commons and this allows teachers to share learning and instruction. Canvas will permit unlimited memory for uploading instructional Videos. Students can do peer reviews and teachers can share student portfolios and rubrics for student feedback. You can also record your feedback using the speed grader.

Cons

Students have a tendency to look at their grades using the school's grading software and make note of Missing assignments. The thing I like least about Canvas is the lack of consistency with the school grading software such as Gradebook or Aspire, and Canvas itself. Missing and Excused grades have no equivalency in Canvas and due to international standards I assume never will.

Good LMS software

Reviewed 3 years ago

This software is really useful to complement class education.

Pros

I use it as a compliment for my classes. I like that all the documents could be uploaded for my students to find in one place. Assigning to my students all kind of assignments, homework, exams is really helpful and they can follow their grades in one place.

Cons

From the teacher perspective the learning curve is pretty high, there should be a manual or a video to teach admins how to use and setup the software to get all the benefits from its functionalities.

Pros

I've been using canvas since I was in college. It was great then, and has also been great for e-learning with the students I now teach.

Cons

Professional and Easy-To-Use Learning + Teaching Software

Reviewed 2 years ago

All in all, Canvas is a great tool for professionals: teachers and students alike. Definitely recommend as a tool for ongoing education or to train new employees.

Pros

The layout is very sleek and professional and easy to navigate. I love the ability to private message my instructors and to see my courses, as well as visit my most used features on the dashboard. Great for a professional teaching course.

Cons

I don't have anything bad to say about this product so far. I have just recently started using this software and right now, as far as a teaching tool goes, it is a really great product. With my background in teaching, I would definitely consider using it to teach online courses in a more professional setting. As far as teaching something more for the masses, I'd say maybe using a different platform such as teachable, but it all depends on the user and their desires.

Good but could be better

Reviewed 3 years ago

It makes my job easier. I save paper. I can work from both home and the office easier. I have used other similar software, and Canvas is the best one that I have used.

Pros

I like being able to give students homework, quizzes, and other assignments online. I like that Canvas keeps track of the grades, allows me to grade written assignments online and make comments on them. I like the integration with Turnitin. Overall, I like Canvas and use it frequently.

Cons

Certain things like setting up quizzes are overly time-consuming. As an adjunct, I teach several sections of the same course and it is unduly complicated to repeat assignments, post videos, etc. for each section of the course.

Best LMS

Canvas is a great software for the higher ed market. It makes it easy to integrate instructor materials with those produced by publishers to create a robust course for students.

Pros

This has the easiest to use interface of any LMS I have worked with. It easily integrates with other online products, and is easy to teach to new users.

Cons

Not quite as many bells and whistles as some other LMS’s, but I think that makes it easier to use. Wish the modules were a little more intuitive to build.

My Online Learning Platform of Choice!

Reviewed 3 years ago

I use CANVAS to teach ALL my classes at the University, currently, which includes an online Physiology course and a live upper division Exercise course. I also use CANVAS to attend trainings for instructor/teacher improvement.

Pros

So many functions you can use to teach, from students in a middle school course on dinosaurs to college undergrads studying physiology to professors training to be superior teachers. I love that you can have easy links to Virtual Office Hours through Conferences, and that you can pair students into study groups or lab sections (through Set Group in People).

Cons

It'd be nice to have more flexibility in creating content like Announcements. For example, I cannot center video uploads, and I need to download images to my Canvas Files before I can simply input them from My Computer.

A good but not great product

Reviewed a year ago

I use Canvas every day when I teach whether online or face-to-face. Many problems I encountered could be solved with some time investment. Learning HTML is not necessary but highly advisable. it will smooth the experience.

Pros

Class management that allows many different types of assessments: submit documents, quizzes, discussion boards. The analytics on students participation allow instructors to issue early alerts. Send reminder emails to students who have not yet submitted an assignment. This is an important tool for eLearning because the participants may forget due dates.

Cons

Lack of flexibility. Students need tutorials on how to use the tools because Canvas is not user friendly and does not have a good manual. Tutorials are buried with no handy search tool. The internal email tool is abysmal. It does not include even the simplest formatting. There is no simple way to insert internal Canvas links in an email to send students to the correct assignment or page. The gradebook is cumbersome . There is no way to have a central repository for test banks. Each iteration of a course must have its own test bank. It makes it difficult to update and maintain.
