Couldn't do it without them!

In the wake of South Dakota v. Wayfair, Avalara alerts us if we have nexus in a new state. This is a priceless benefit. Also, Avalara was instrumental in helping us comply with a Tennessee customer's request for a multi-year sales tax refund. Thanks to Avalara, we survived the experience without hiring additional labor and the customer was satisfied with the outcome.

Pros

Avalara keeps up with all the nationwide changes in taxing jurisdictions month-to-month so we can focus on our business transactions and not struggle with tax compliance. They operate seamlessly in the background and keep us accurate and exposure-free.

Cons

I am eternally disappointed that I didn't come up with the concept for Avalara myself =)

Avalara Makes Taxes Less Taxing

Ever since the U.S. Supreme Court decision in South Dakota v. Wayfair, I had to deal with more tax scrutiny. I am a tiny shop, but knowing that Avalara and their Avatax program is calculating my sales tax, I feel reassured about filing on time and correctly. When my sales grow they also have an option to sign up with multiple states and file my returns for me at a reduced cost.

Pros

I use Avalara's Avatax program to determine sales tax on my Woocommerce shop. The tax calculation is seamless and accurate. The synchronization works in the background, and I am confident that my customers are always charged the correct amount, even with the confusing sales tax rules of New York and California.

Cons

The software and/platform takes a little getting used to. If you are not familiar with tax codes, you might have to do a little digging, but support is always available. Setting up the return calendars can also be a little confusing. It can be expensive to have them file for you in many states if you have a nexus there. All tax calculation programs are costly, but it is much better than me doing it all on my own.

Horrible Software with even worse Customer Service

Awful, support staff has very clearly never used the software, some have never seen it. Software does not provide the basic functionality that is advertised. Our account manager is incredibly rude and ignores emails. So phenomenally frustrating. The few helpful people I have worked with that actually understands how the software is supposed to work have made it clear that the issue we are experiencing are back-end programming problems that need to be resolved by their back-end support team. Despite following up multiple times I have yet to receive any resolution. After putting in countess hours and way too much in subscription costs into getting this software setup I can honestly say it is more time and cost effective to manually calculate tax on each order than it is to use Avalara.

Pros

After over a year of use, nothing. there is nothing redeemable about this software.

Cons

On an entirely basic level, the software does not function. It is advertised as integrating with QuickBooks Desktop but I have yet to see it function properly for an entire day. It has created such a phenomenal mess of our QuickBooks file and is completely unreliable to calculate taxes correctly to the point that each transaction has to be manually checked to ensure tax filings are correct. I have been told by numerous support staff that this is not normal but after spending literal hours working to try and rectify the issues, have come to realize that the software does not function as advertised and likely never has. Absolutely atrocious that this was ever advertised to work with QuickBooks Desktop. DO NOT USE THIS SOFTWARE.

Pros

Avalara reporting tools such as Credit Carry forward balance and liability worksheet. The reports are very detailed and would help in an audit situation.

If everything is set up & you don't need any additional support, Avalara is great. Otherwise, look elsewhere

If you have no backfilings that you need to do and you know everything will be set up correctly from the get go then sure, go with them. But otherwise stay far, far away. I was not the one who implemented Avalara, I took it over and have not been pleased with our overall experience. I also find their prices quite high, though I have nothing to compare it to. The combination of their chaotic emailing, lack of support with our new account manager, and their high prices are definitely making us lean towards taking our business elsewhere.

Pros

Their website is very easy to navigate, also love that they have right on the dashboard states that we're coming up on reaching the nexus threshold. Our old account manager was very responsive and helpful, unfortunately our new one is not.

Cons

Their emailing method is absolute *insanity* and extremely confusing because every email response you receive STARTS A WHOLE NEW EMAIL THREAD so if you have multiple projects going on it is nearly impossible to keep things straight. I literally had to make a spreadsheet one time when we had multiple backfilings going on because it was incredibly chaotic and stressful. Their website seems to regularly go down or will just have 1 page that isn't working which is incredibly frustrating. Their state registration fees are massive and you basically have to provide them ALL the information they'll be using to file with the state anyway. Save yourself the money and do it yourself.

We had accuracy issues with our last sales tax provider and since implementing AvaTax, we have decreased our risk of charging the incorrect tax rates to our customers located across the US.

Pros

Once the initial setup is completed and tested, Avalara takes the guesswork out of sales tax. It is more accurate and cost effective than our previous third party sales tax provider. Also, the product is so easy to use and to navigate.

Cons

The implementation (like with all other software) hit snags that were unexpected, and took our IT team some extra time to link our billing system with AvaTax.

Implementation is key

Overall, I am happy with product as it is has saved time for team in filing reports and also is a great repository for our sales tax related files.

Pros

Central location to review sales tax filings, transactions, payments, etc. The feature for tracking states that may trip nexus and require filings is great. Good connections with account manager to update us on features and changes to account.

Cons

Needing to login to Avalara to check tickets submitted for review instead of receiving e-mail notifications. Implementation seemed very cumbersome and time consuming especially when implemented with various systems.

Brutal customer service, no transparency on billing

We use Avatax integrated with our ecommerce provider. It does what's advertised on the tin, but don't expect clear and transparent pricing.

Pros

Tax calculates correctly, unless the API is down of course.

Cons

It is impossible to receive an answer from the support team regarding billing. For a month now I've been trying to understand the 4x price increase we received after almost 10 years. There was no explanation on the renewal notice. Submitted a support case online, no response for a week. Called, spoke to a person, 48 hours later my case was closed with information unrelated to my case. They also called me by another name.

Multi district/state tax calculation made easy.

Pros

Platform is flexible and mapping is intuitive, even for complex tax situations. Easy integration with Magento Enterprise.

Cons

Reports are difficult to run. Its more complex than it should be to add manual transactions and the UI needs a considerable update. But my biggest complaint has been in the lack of customer service. It has regularly taken WEEKS for our customer service rep to respond to my emails. And when I showed the "Customer Experience Manager" at Avalara the chain of emails that shows it has regularly taken weeks,...

Big improve, make that massive improvement over Vertex. In fairness, the move to Netsuite solidified the Avalara move.

Pros

*Interface with Netsuite *Management reports available for month REC *Driven by strong Tax knowledge and customer awareness.

Cons

*Website is still not what it should be regarding ease of use. *Resent changes in how support is handled may produce cost saving however it may be at the expense of customer need for timely response. In the past I suspect customers contacted support only after giving up on attempts to gain intel from the website.... may not be pleased having to wait longer. Avalara does not file at all on exception...

Great Product & Well Worth the Money

Overall experience has been great and I'm very happy we selected Avalara 5 years ago. The product has only improved in my opinion since then and as mentioned before, it's a huge benefit to us in saving us time and resources as well as helping to reduce our risk around sales tax obligations.

Pros

Avalara's sales tax management solution has been fantastic for our company. Before we implemented Avalara 5 years ago, everything we did was manual and left us to risk of miscalculations of tax. It's all automated now based on the shipping address, nature of our revenue, and their tax engine calculates the tax and includes on our invoices. We also use CertCapture and have Avalara filed our returns - franky, it's very cheap relative to the value it provides our business in savings of time/resources and improving our controls around sales tax obligations.

Cons

I don't have many complaints about the software - it's been very intuitive to use and was pretty easy to implement. The only small complaint I have is when the liability worksheet locks down the 10th of the following month, you can't make any more changes to a given state without them unlocking it for you and incurring a fee. I think a few of these requests should be included in your subscription as they are bound to happen.

In general Avalara has been a great product. It saves us a great amount of time every month.

Avalara definitely saves time and money by automating the sales tax. As well as keeps us in compliance, as I could not keep track of the sales tax we owe in every state when tax rates continually change.

Pros

You don't have to think about it. Once you get it set up, it runs smoothly on its own and only requires a monthly review to tie out to your GL. Having Avalara remit sales tax on my behalf is a great option.

Cons

The software works great. We have had issues with the Cert Capture add on. Which can be very confusing to use. Also setting up reminders on the cert capture side is challenging, and the email directly to customers from Cert Capture is a confusing process for both the administrators and the customers receiving the requests. I would also like additional stability with our customer rep. We are on our...

A great resource for sales tax calculations

Overall, I am very satisfied with Avalara. It has connectors to the software and eCommerce sites that I need, and with those, setup is quite painless.

Pros

The software works great. Once you have it set up, it runs in the background and involves almost no review. I know we are always charging the correct tax rate and with the tax return processing, I know my returns are being submitted correctly and on time. With exposure in most US states, staying up to date on all tax changes and filing individual returns would require a small team to keep accurate. With Avalara, we set up the states and localities we are in and the software takes care of the rest.

Cons

When questions do come up, customer service could do a better job. I have also had our individual customer rep changed on us multiple times in the last year, which is frustrating. I have also experienced billing issues around the time of renewal each year, which can take up to 4 or 5 months to get resolved.

Run away!

A total nightmare. If I had a time machine, I would go back to the day before I signed up with Avalara and push myself off a cliff. I would be much better off.

Pros

Once everything is set up, the service performs its basic (and very important) task: it files accurate, timely sales tax reports. If you love having lots of zoom meetings, you'll love Avalara. Nothing gets done without several video calls.

Cons

If you ever encounter a problem (and we encountered MANY), do not count on anyone taking responsibility for the issues, or being able to fix them. Avalara's employees are hopelessly "siloed" ... sales does their thing and passes you off to implementation, who then leaves you in the hands of an account rep. In our case, none of these people did their job correctly, and they do not work together well....

Worst Customer Service Experience

Absolutely awful, one of the most frustrating experiences I have ever had with a piece of paid software.

Pros

Nothing, I am just typing to meet the character requirements here.

Cons

Well, first off the account manager for our VDA left the company and we were never notified or assigned a new one, that took me several weeks to resolve. (I was continued told my AM was person x, person x's email was not active and their phone number disconnected though...) Then, the decided to cancel our sandbox key even though we had paid for a live API key, making testing changes a bit tricky. When we asked for our sandbox key to be re-activated, they tried to charge us. (I have never see a software company try and charge a paying client for a sandbox....) This isn't to mention that I have yet to find anyone at the company I would consider responsive...

My overall experience with Avalara has been very positive, I especially enjoy all of the resources to help business understand the sales & use tax process.

Pros

Avalara is very user friendly, and makes it easy to collect & remit the correct sales tax. The various reports available on the portal are very helpful to ensure we remain in compliance. I also really appreciate all of the education and resources available, I have found all of the available webinars and articles extremely helpful.

Cons

The Support case/Tax Notice process could be improved- cases close automatically after a response is provided by Avalara support, and it can be challenging to have follow-up questions addressed after the case is closed.

It drastically reduces the amount of time required to calculate sales tax, remit tax returns, and reconcile.

Pros

I like the reliability of the software, the lack of problems that arise, and the degree of simplification it brings to what could be a difficult process.

Cons

I feel that some of the integrations with third parties could be improved, namely QuickBooks, as the ability to run batches of invoices has never worked for me despite numerous attempts to fix this with customer support. I also believe that the customer service has been drastically reduced over the last year based on some recent experiences. This is a shame because Avalara had some of the best customer support I have ever encountered, previously.

Sales tax has become a hot issue and a difficult one to navigate. Avalara is a huge help in managing the process and despite a few flaws, it's pretty invaluable. Saves so much time and effort

I started a free trial with Avalara and didn't have any issues with their software--I just decided to go with a different service. I couldn't find how to cancel my account in my settings so I messaged their customer support and asked if I needed to cancel or if I could let the time run out on the free subscription. The agent I spoke with stated "Yes, you can let the time run out since it is your free...

Pros

Automation features and variety of platforms that can be synced with Avalara make it appealing.

Cons

The software itself seems well constructed but it wasn't quite what I needed for my business. I contacted customer support before my free trial ended because I couldn't find where to cancel my account and they advised that because it was a free trial, I could let the free trial expire. Once it expired I was still charged for a full year's subscription.

Avalara tax interpretation is easiest of the 4 tax software engines I use today

The product is great, the reporting tool with data results are logical. Customer support stinks, and migrations, implementations, cause a huge problem and strain our relationship with Avalara regularly to the point that we have a number of other tax solutions winning the bid in newly acquired entities and migrations because Avalara is not reliable in this area.

Pros

Avalara has created a logical well thought out tax calculation product that allows for laymens terms interpretations with our customers. related to surcharges, tax on tax implications, that many traditional CPA's and accountants are not familiar with, and the Telecommunications industry is loaded with tax on tax at the Federal and State levels.

Cons

Avalara implementations and customer support are generally NOT good. Every implementation I have done with Avalara has required myself or my company, accountants, engineers to do 85% of the work to implement, test, and go live. This has been a problem for years across numerous products we use today. Please start addressing this.

Service is Nonexistent - Broken Software

Since they charged me over $7,000 dollars for a product that never worked - zero benefits. I would never recommend this company. Avalara has had a history of terrible customer service but from recent reviews, that had seemed to change. It hasn't. If you encounter issues, be prepared to suffer through basic IT troubleshooting multiple times before your issue isn't resolved.

Pros

Avalara could never get the connector to work to use the software. But the online interface seemed like it would have been useful had Avalara gotten their software to work with QuickBooks.

Cons

The implementation process was miserable. From day one, I received a nondescript error that was simply a large red question mark in a dialogue box from the QuickBooks Connector. The application would also attempt to open a hundred windows while using QuickBooks. Three separate engineers walked me through the exact same troubleshooting - uninstall, reinstall, change permissions, restart computer, etc....

Avalara saves my staff time!

Our experience with Avalara has been a good one. Though no-one really likes dealing with Sales tax, this software has allowed us to manage it without having to add any staff - and that is a HUGE plus in my book. We have had some issues, but once we addressed them with the support staff - they were eventually corrected. Avalara also had a connection to the software we are currently using - Sage 300.

Pros

The amount of time my staff is saved by using Avalara to calculate and maintain Sales tax is enormous. This software accurately calculates tax and we also use it to file the taxes. The software has worked very well for us.

Cons

There were a few bumps in the road when we started, but we worked through them. Some of that required that we stay on top of the issue - because the support staff was overloaded due to the enormous increase of customers that Avalara had. But now that things are moving along, IF we do run into an issue, their support people are always available to help out.

CertCapture does what it is supposed to do, but doesn't make it easy

It would be impossible to correctly charge tax and file in the various states where we now have "economic nexus" without Avalara, so Avalara has been indespensible. However, they have completely ignored my suggestions for improvements for over 4 years. We need them, but I hope they get better at the certificate capture part of the business.

Pros

Certcapture provides the ability to create a campaign to email or fax customers for whom exempt certificates are required, and it makes it easy for them to supply the certificate(s). It is also simple to followup with those that did not initially respond. For daily use, the Walk me Through help feature, and the great wealth of help articles and FAQs, make it easy to find the answer to any questions.

Cons

CertCapture allows you to select an Exempt Reason that isn't valid for the state of the certificate. Avalara knows it isn't a valid reason, but it lets you select it anyway, and doesn't give you an error. After you finish validating the certificate and saving it, you can then look at a "History" tab and there you will see an API Call Failed error which if you research you'll find out the reason. But...
