For micro businesses - not helpful for growth

17/11/2016

Was using this for one of my clients. He loved it because it was very easy to use. He only used it for invoices and estimates. From an accounting perspective not useful. It was very slow and the options available for the bank rec were tedious and changed sometimes after being reconciled. Very easy to mess up. Took alot of time to find out how to fix the issue.

BASIC Bookkeeping

04/11/2016

For free, Accounting by Wave is a fine product. While it lacks the power, functionality, and reporting features that make Xero & QBO the leaders of the online accounting space, for small businesses and startups on a tight budget, Wave can definitely make a difference in your bookkeeping. Like its subscription based competitors, Wave offers bank feeds for easy reconciliation. It has some basic reports that are essential for healthy businesses (like P&L and Balance Sheets), but the reporting overall is not too powerful. Entering transactions is easy enough, but the interface is slow to switch between screens and reconciliation becomes more challenging when splitting transactions between multiple accounts as the software actually splits the transaction in half (so the total no longer matches your bank statement total). At the same time, the idea behind the bank feeds is that the only version of reconciliation is not as necessary. I do recommend Wave for startups that have only one type of income that needs to be tracked. Once you get into businesses that deal with wholesale, retail, services, etc. in one business, something a bit more powerful could provide some true benefit. Wave payroll is also simple to use and effective if you set it up right. The price is low (though there are better payroll providers that compete in price), and the process simple. In some states, the payroll is actually full-service, which is a great benefit.

Pros

The software is free and simple for small businesses.

Cons

I dislike the slow interface and limited functionality. It is not a fit for all industries.

Not full featured - You have to pay for Support - Frequently Down with Bugs - Proceed with Caution

07/10/2016

It sounds good at first: "free". However, you soon find that you will need to have support, and you have to pay monthly for that. Then you find that it lacks many basic accounting functions. You cannot even search by payee or amount. Then you find that it crashes if you try to do your billing on the first of the month because most of their users want to bill at the first of the month and their infrastructure cannot handle the load. If you're not a CPA *and* a software engineer, you may want to look elsewhere. I *am* a CPA and a software engineer, and I can barely make do with it.

Pros

It's free

Cons

It's not really free because you have to pay for support and you WILL need support. Also, their server infrastructure cannot handle the load at peak times like the first of the month, and it crashes.

Wonderful Software But So Slow

07/07/2015

This software does a great job of invoicing and accepting payments. The big downside is the speed at which it moves. It takes sometimes over a minute to pull up an invoice. When customers are on the phone or inline waiting to pay, it is a very long time. "Time is Money"

Pros

Email Invoices, Simple to Learn, Clean Interface, Easy for customer to use, Has flexibility on how it can be used. Can run more than one business from the same account. Can share with unlimited users. It's Free

Cons

SO SLOW! The time it takes to create an invoice or accept payment over the phone, another software could have done 3 invoices or more. No Customer Portal for continuous tracking. Limited on payment processors.

Almost a fan

Close but...

13/12/2013

Free great basic software. Main problem for me is that the categories are not customizable so I cannot track expenses and income effectively. Seems like a simple fix to allow users to create their own categories.

Pros

Free solid platform.

Cons

Flexibility and customization.

No bank integration to CIBC

Integration to Bank (not for CIBC though!)

02/04/2013

Not happy to learn that Wave Accounting does not integrate to one of the Big 5 Canadian banks, CIBC (Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce). Luckily I have a RBC account and it can link to that...

Pros

TD, RBC, Scotiabank, and BMO (the other 4 of the Big 5 Canadian banks) all supported. Even Credit Unions like Vancity is supported.

Cons

CIBC not supported
