Creating your first invoice in Wave

Video Transcript

Speakers in this video: Jimmy (GetApp) and Brooke (Wave)

Brooke: Let me start with invoicing. It's usually a really great starting point for our users. A lot of people come to Wave because they have an invoicing need and they really want to get paid by their customers and track all of that.

Jimmy: Okay.

Brooke: So invoicing is definitely an interesting place to start. And again, it's 100% free to use.

Jimmy: Can we walk through maybe creating that first invoice?

Brooke: Absolutely! I'm just going to click on the invoicing tab here and because it's my first time logging into invoicing, it's going to prompt me to add my logo on here. What I'm going to do, if I can get my downloads to pop-up here, I'm just going to drag this fake logo onto here to show you how easy it is to setup your invoice.

Jimmy: Okay, pretty simple.

Brooke: Yeah, really easy. All you have to do is press 'save and create' once you have your address in there and then it's three easy steps to get your invoice setup. There're a couple of things that may not be obvious right away. So I will point them out. You can actually edit the title of your invoice. If you're a non for profit, you may want this to say, "Donation."

Jimmy: Okay.

Brooke: You may want to have a Tax ID in it or you just can keep it as invoice and then you can also edit the numbers. If you want to have an alpha numeric system, I find a lot of people do this to kind of help them keep track of certain products or anything like that. Then you can edit the invoice dates if you'd like to and you can also edit the due dates. You can basically select whenever you would like that invoice to be due.

Jimmy: Okay.

Brooke: In the subheading you can put a "Tax ID" perhaps and then in a footer you want to say, "Thank you." Then step number one is for customers; this where you're going to put the person that you're invoicing. If you don't have any customers in your Wave account yet, they will prompt you to add a person. I'm just going to put in an email address for John. The next thing on the list is products. So you will be able to keep a customer list and a product list within your Wave account and you can certainly access those lists as well which I will show you a little bit later.

Jimmy: Okay. So here we could just enter a new product directly?

Brooke: Yes! You can just click photo shoot is my product. I'm going to say, "Create products." I haven't had that product before and I'm going to say it is $100. Now, this piece at the end is where you can actually put a tax, a sales tax onto your invoice. Depending on where you're located and Wave actually has customers in almost 200 countries. We leave this up to you. You can actually setup your own sales taxes in Wave. For us it would be HST in Ontario and that would all get worked in to the invoice properly.

Jimmy: Okay.

Brooke: Once you have all your details, you can save your invoice.

Jimmy: And there we go!

Brooke: Yeah! This shows you your invoice. If you want to get an exact picture of how the customer is going to see this invoice, you can actually preview it by device. If you know that your customer is going to receive it on their phone, you can click on the mobile device. Take a look at what it's all about. The customer can also print and PDF the invoice.
