I had Allscripts before this EMR for ten years. Horrible customer service. I had eMDS after Allscripts - more horrible service and a disaster of a product that was nearly non-functional. I believe that Athena is the best that there currently is. I would not change and it has helped my bottom line and satisfaction in practice. No EMR is going to save you time - all they do is keep you honest in reporting and decrease your risk of accidentally over billing due to lack of documentation.
It handles the changes to the healthcare environment; ie MACRA, MIPS, Meaningfull use, automatic vaccine/ pharmaceutical data download. Electronic prescribing including controlled substances.
Time consuming like most EMRs. There really isn't a significant negative for this product. Requires that you take the time to customize and streamline for your workflow.

You can use Athena for every step of the healthcare process. From checking in patients, entering their insurance information, even verifying Medicare.
They have a lot of changes, most of which we do not get a heads up for. For example, on Monday our system looks like it always has, then on Tuesday there has been an update which changes the way you do things.

Athena is a network, not just an EMR with billing. The software updates roll out seamless and at NO additional cost to my practice.
The more problems we solve with the Athena network, the more we realize healthcare delivery has some basic problems. Understandable Athena can not solve all the problems, but they try hard.

Can get workable solutions from customer service. With practice fusion and amazing charts, you may never get the solution.
Using labcorp as my lab, I can't get a printout of the labs without big headers and footers on every page. Consume alot of copy paper.

I liked the customer service we got from our rep when we initially set up our account. He was patient and kind.
I would really like to know if the creators of Athena worked in a healthcare environment, soo many clicks just to get to ONE thing, non-clinician side of things is not as simple as it could be. Our staff inbox is overwhelming, lots of closing documents that are time wasters -

Our company found AthenaHealth to be the best Healthcare Billing Software we have ever used. It is so ingrained in our daily tasks that I can no longer imagine use functioning properly as a profitable business with the freedom to cultivate creative expressions and innovations without it. Their Customer Service staff are always helpful and take their time with you as if you were the only customer in the world.
The software takes some getting used. Customer Service is extremely helpful but hold times can be excruciating - especially when you need the software right then and there

Athenahealth is the best life boat for any independent practicing physician or group. It is the best EMR and billing solution if you don't like being employed. No margin, no mission. Not in business or in medicine. So, the best EMR solutions IMHO are those that started as biling solutions and added EMR later, not vice versa. Many reviews are focused solely on the clinical aspects of the EMR but, again: no margin, no mission. There may be better EMR clinical solutions but nobody matches Athenahealth on billing, EMR, patient portal, integrated functionality, and low cost. The best single solution for independent physicians. Look no further.
For an all inclusive solution to what ails most independent physicians, there is no better option.
The EMR could be more versatile in terms of templating.

athenaHealth has been a vital part of our business structure since 2005. We rely on athenaHealth for business efficiency and for the documentation of our patients’ medical records. The document management, the interfaces, the quality management tools, the portal and many other features built into this EHR are paramount to the success of our providers and ultimately the financial success of our practice. The athenaHealth product continues to evolve at a rapid pace in this ever-changing world of healthcare.
The insurance referral documentation process. We can document well, but cannot FAX directly from the system. I think there is a new solution in development at athena to address this issue.

A trusted partner that helps us both our clinical and business model so we can successfully care for our pediatric patients and keep our doors open. I like the model that they don't make money unless we do so they just don't sell us software and forget about us and the needs of our practice. Having them constantly monitoring the healthcare environment, researching and developing products and tools means we stay on the cutting edge and can survive no matter what is sent our way by insurers, contracts, regulators and government.
Hard to answer this question because there is very little we don't like. Sure do we wish they would provide us with more developmental scored screens on the portal and help us to become even more paperless. It is not a doc in a box and the user needs to be engaged and collaborate with athenahealth to utilize and optimize the product. I don't see this as a negative. Athenahealth is growing at 30% per year and we need them to keep their pulse on the not losing the service model and support they have built their co-sourcing model on. Healthcare management has gotten more complicated and cumbersome and bridging the gap with what Athena has to offer and what practices need is a must.

Have been with Athena for 7 years. As with any EHR, there is a required investment in time, and flexibility of your practice is a must. Once providers understand the power of the tool, workflows become simplified in the ever-changing world of healthcare. Updates remain a constant. The reporting is by far the best in the industry, providing group, individual, organization and patient data at the touch of the fingertips. The challenges are keeping up with its changes, and understanding the fact that individuals cannot re-write entire formatting programs to specifically fit into each individual box. Having an HIM person within your company to monitor this could be your best investment initially. Customer service is good, but the intricacies required are sometimes time-challenging.

Great experience for over 8 years now; many of my peers wish they had switched to Athena once they see the capabilities of the product.
I have seen this software grow over the years and now have friends using it within multiple different services lines in the healthcare industry. Some of the key pros I can think of quickly include: - Flexibility, (features and design allow of different service locations, and different physicians within the same practice to see/edit EMR information to fit the individual) - Transparency, (live EMR,...
Advancement requests,or recommendations for improvements, from clients are rated and scored by clients across the system, which is a great design! Recommendations from the User Community require time to develop, grade, prioritize and implement. Eventually, the highest costumer rated recommendations get attention and are implemented with accuracy; just takes time.

Streamline is horrible There is no way to get a overview of patient via problem lists, call, or cases. Good luck finding documents without multiple clicks. It crashes at least 7'times a day which they blame on Microsoft which it did not before The customer service is a joke, their solutions to the issues do not work and they call you back 5 days after they "escalate " your service request. When you call in you are waiting on service response and each time it is like Groundhog Day as they have "closed your case" without resolving the issues. I guess their stats look better that way.

It is integrated EMR, Billing and Care Management that does help address PCMH, MU, and other complex Government/Insurer issues. First pass billing and payment process works fairly well and seems efficient when there are no errors (see below). Cost is reasonable for the services provided.
The base code is absolutely awful. This leads to repeated problems with your interface, incompatibilities, and slow response. If you surf employment sites you will find this a recurring theme noted by ex-employees. The product has many features that increase the chance for human error and patient harm, and the company refuses to admit or deal with these issues, in fact compounding basic problems...

I am a Family Medicine primary care physician. I have worked w/ my fair share of various EHRs over the years & have to say that, of all the ones I’ve used in the past, Athenahealth is w/o a doubt the absolute worst. To be fair, it does have (some) good things about it as aforementioned above, but those helpful features pale in comparison to the daily struggle that using this system most commonly affords...
The organization of certain sections was done pretty well. Easy INR managing. Fairly good growth charts w/ automatically calculated percentages available. Good implementation of external screening questionnaires, meaningful use, etc. Ability to create auto-texts, templates, etc.
Glitchiest product imaginable: text formatting issues, superimposed text transferring to next screen, text failing to scroll to next line causing entire paragraph to look jumbled up, poor copy-paste, small view screens/boxes, stubborn dragging/sorting of ICD diagnosis code boxes, frequent slow-downs, freezes, sudden unpredictable crashes failing to save one’s note work. Severely outdated terminology...

i am so sick of apologizing to patients, looking like i am a moron and staying hours later ( sometimes 1am compared to previous (functional) ehr where 730pm was the record and i’d occasionally miss the gym before closing...now i have suspended the gym membership). do not get. if you have any standards and clicking boxes does not suffice for your standards, or if you expect reliability and functionality, this ehr will drive you mad!!!
it’s search feature was useful ONE TIME compared to our old ehr. ..the training team was nice and appeared competent. appreciate e-prescribing controlled substances WHEN IT actually WORKS AND ACTUALLY GETS THERE AFTER YOU’VE BEEN ALERTED THAT IT HAD!!!!!!!!!
I am facile in computers and code to some extent. i am picky about my notes but am creative and work around a lot of garbage and always have without as much as a groan and am considered quite agreeable. HOWEVER, the word ATHENA incites rage in me. portal doesn’t work. can’t preload notes until pt checked in. this is bad for new patients in my specialty. when highlighting text, it does not overwrite....
