Athena caters to everything a center needs to operate. Plus, Athena keeps getting better.
It is an all in one, one stop shop, software for our Gastro clinic and surgery. As the Quality Manager, what I like best is it has a marketplace that offers integration to the software. When the state mandates rules and compliance, Athena makes sure they can get you covered within their marketplace. This is very useful for our Billing Department.
Physical Chart keeping is still a good way to keep record for back up. When Athena has a malfunction for just a few hours or half of the day, our patient queue wait takes extremely long. Thus, we get bad service reviews. Athena is great but a health and surgery center should always have a physical backup management to continue operation in case Athena fails. Billing also stops operation.

I have been using Athena Health with a dedicated EMR for more than 3 years. The system is quite intricate and integrated, but the training is unsurpassed. All the training units are interactive video, which makes learning the system a very independent process. The CSR is great - depending on the time of year (or the weather!) the hold times can be long, but I ALWAYS get a rep who is friendly and helpful. If they can't solve the problem immediately, they can pass it upward or create a case which is generally resolved in a timely way. I do experience problems with posting of claims from paper EOBs, and I do audit claims from those payers regularly, to make sure copays and adjustments have been posted correctly. Otherwise, this system is robust and easy to work with.
Ability to customize the product to the practice's needs.
Can be a little slow.

The ability to graph and chart different data points (labs, vitals, Coumadin results, etc) and visualize these within the chart can be helpful. Dot phrase macro texts as well as pre selected boxes for templates can both provide significant increase in efficiency. Notes come out readable and logical as opposed to some overly-templated notes.
System can be a little "bulky" in the sense that there are so many potential customizations and a fair amount of button clicking required until you become more familiar with the system. Auto defaulting on pharmacies, labs, ect is very good when it works, but can lead to mistakes if a patient uses more than one pharmacy for certain drugs. Med list reconciliation is less intuitive than it seems it could be, as well as a lack of auto-integrating diagnosis into the problem list.

Again, reporting is very accurate. It was not originally made for urgent care so there are a few work arounds like work flows for instance.
Prior to this we had Docutap which had a more user-friendly interface. However, when we would run a report and then the same one 5 minutes later using the same parameters they would never balance out. With athena we can run reports for one site or all 17 sites or any combination. It's also easy to get used to the user-interface, just takes a little practice.
athena's products don't come cheap and if you need customer support you need to put in a ticket which is a pain. To do a customization of a requirement takes quite a bit of time and effort.

Initially Athena appears intimidating to use, but once you get the hang of it, its a breeze. I really like that it comes with epocrates.
It comes with Epocrates. Not once since we have had this software has it went down. Customer support is great at fixing your problems right away.
When adding Lab orders and Imaging orders if you are using different facilities sometimes you have to go in and change the facility or the items you are trying to order will not pull up. It is frustrating when you are in a rush. The software will assume you are ordering for just one facility and tell you order not available at this facility so you will have to take extra steps to change to facility to order the specific item. Therefore you are switching back and forth between different screens. This does not happen for me often but when it does happen of course I am always backed up with patients.

Overall I would choose Athena again and recommend it to my colleagues.
AthenaOne does updates frequently to stay on top of the constant changes in healthcare. Training information is provided at each step of the way. The best feature is the live chat function that allows you access any assistance/troubleshooting needed in real time.
The process to work claims on the back end takes some getting used to.

after slogging for 8 years with an inferior EMR and billing system(allscripts), i decided to take the plunge and bought Athena in AUg 2012. Certainly as you can imagine, changing billings systems was not easy with down time and claims across two systems but we got that worked out . the best feature of this is of course the EMR, the layout the reminders and all that Athena does so much better than the others. It has been a tremendous pleasure to enjoy working on the clinical side with built in reminders for improved reimbursement.I never looked back and am happy to say that I recommend to many of my independant private practice colleagues.
the emr is elegant, easy, and straight forward.
the transition from one system to another was burdensome. but that was awhile ago. I am sure this has improved.

We have been associated with Athena since 2008, which we began with the billing component and adding the EHR in 2010. I was amazed at the ease of using the software without hands on persons for training. I am not a young person (73yrs old) but the online training was unbelievably easy to grasp. I have spoken with other clinics/physicians about Athena and given rave review. As things should progress every so often we will be required to streamline, learn to do something a different way, etc. When ICD-10 came upon us, it seemed a little scary but when we went live with it, a piece of cake. Cannot say enough "good" things about Athena.
The ease of using all parts, billing as well as clinical.
Sometimes have slow response from CSC when we are trying to solve a problem, passed around a lot.

I am using it in my work and I have not received any complaint of difficulty or malfunction with payment from the patient and just this week, I have used athenaone as a patient used when I paid my bill from Banner Health. I can truly say it is a very good and recommendable software to use.
It is easy to use, fast and transactions are safe. As of today, I did not encounter any patient that complains when it comes to their billing statements with athenaone software. The statement enters through a link sent via SMS and email, in that way the patients will have choices in whatever mode they want to use to access their medical bill.
The only thing I would suggest for improvement is that once the patient settled the bill, they cannot review back immediately the previous bill posted but from the admin side, if there are any query from the patient, all the details can be accessed and viewed by the health care staff so it is still east to assist the patient.

Athenahealth is the best life boat for any independent practicing physician or group. It is the best EMR and billing solution if you don't like being employed. No margin, no mission. Not in business or in medicine. So, the best EMR solutions IMHO are those that started as biling solutions and added EMR later, not vice versa. Many reviews are focused solely on the clinical aspects of the EMR but, again: no margin, no mission. There may be better EMR clinical solutions but nobody matches Athenahealth on billing, EMR, patient portal, integrated functionality, and low cost. The best single solution for independent physicians. Look no further.
For an all inclusive solution to what ails most independent physicians, there is no better option.
The EMR could be more versatile in terms of templating.

We have been using Athena for almost 4 years. The ease of use, ability to just connect to the internet wherever we are is a huge plus. Also, we do not need to have a server room, pay for costly tech support people to be on standby is also a great selling point. The ability to run pretty much any type of report from front end to back end in real time helps see the direction and trends the practice is going through.
Transparency of the EMR is wonderful! Ability to see real time claims, payments, overall status in a payment cycle. Ease of use for clinical staff, doctors has really cut down on our charting. Athena lets you customize your charts, add templates, and will create interfaces with other programs you may use.

The new upgrade has completed. We have several employee s who only have half of the new streamlined system. There are some of us who only have the new version and some who only have the old version. I believe Athena should of worked out all the issues before going live.
It is a new system and once we get to use it more we will be able to see the strengths and weakness of the system.
We were not told of the features that were being removed. I understand we must adapt to change. I 'm curious which practices you interviewed to determine that certain features were no longer needed so you deleted them with the new upgrade. I don't feel that my staff learned the information they need through the tutorials.

Overall, Athena is really good at helping you do everything you need to do in order to take care of your patients. Their visit summaries and their order is great, claim billing is easy, and this EMR has a lot of great features.
Ease of claim billing, check-in process flows really well, and the in-take is also easy all you have to do is follow the steps. Like how the system does confirmation calls, and they provide patient portal access which a lot of our patients love.
The only con I have is sometimes if there is a claim with a specific error, you really have to spend time to push it through, and if there is an Athena rule in place, you have to get a few people involved.

Athena one is such an easy site to use from a healthcare standpoint. Scanning in orders is so convenient and everything is easy to sort through.
I have used so many different electronic health sites and Athena is by far the most user friendly and hardly ever has tech issues.
Sometimes when the site is down there is no communication about it and you have to figure it out on your own.

This is an adequate emr. There are certainly worse emrs on the market that are more cumbersome but there are also several emrs on the marketplace that are much better once you learn to use them
This emr enables a patient portal, saved findings and saved phrases. Some labs interface with the program.
Orders faxed to your office go into a queue and are not easily accessible real time. Mistakes can be made regarding scanning documents to the wrong patient. Help via phone is not convenient for real time office practice. Other emrs offer better support. HOWEVER, the biggest issues involve selecting a diagnosis rather than an icd 10, the inability to link meds with multiple diagnoses, the way medications are reviewed, difficulty in reviewing ice 10 from the problem list, amending notes and also how to review historic documents.

The actual EMR is well designed and one of the best on the market. The workflows and order sets made use of the EMR very easy to use.
We liked the Athena EMR. We did not like the Athena One package, the related onboarding process or the corporate policies of Athena. We were told that the onboarding process would be 3 months. During that time we had (unhelpful) weekly meetings with Athena reps. My staff and myself did the required ,yet excessive, onboarding tasks outside of these meetings. However after 5 months the Athena One build out was still incomplete due to Athena staff's lack of progress. Communications around their delays were met with corporate gaslighting and deflecting. This is a solo provide practice with 1-2 insurance panels. There is no logical reason that the EMR should not have been ready for use after 5 months. I have used Athena in other settings and it seems that they do a very poor job with submitting claims. Most practice lose money if they re relying on Athena One to submit claims.

Athena is extremely easy to use. I am in charge of training new providers in our practice and even those that are terrible with computers seem to "get it" quickly. It's loaded with great tools and features and I'm able to finish my notes immediately after seeing patients. It has many ways to customize it for my practice.
There are so many small improvements that Athena could make and while they do offer a sort of "suggestion" page within their system that they review, they are more focused on forward improvement than dedicating resources to fix the small issues that exist with the current system.

It is fast; automatically saves most of what you type in; does not crash very often (3-4 times/year); email support requests usually answered within 24 hours; online help knowledge base is comprehensive and it has a good search engine.
Not designed for mental health EHR, patient management, communication. Primary care clinicians say it's "pretty good" although "EPIC is better". Most behavioral health clinicians do not like Athena (based on support forum polls and Athena even admits it if your decipher the corporate-speak.) Athena rarely designs workflows, templates, and processes for Behavioral Health. They cobble together features and processes used by primary care clinicians and staff and tell us it's designed for Behavioral Health. If Athena employs mental health professionals I've never seen them on video presentations or as authors of "how to" resources or anywhere else.

Product/company has not lived up to the promises made to increase cash flow. It's difficult to have control over claims and numerous times we found service items that were written off by Athena rather than being researched for additional reimbursement. We feel Athena is not a good match for a small practice. Cost of numerous features that a small practice does not utilize makes the cost of Athena too expensive.
Insurance eligibility checking system. Data entry of claims easy to navigate. Basic scheduling was ok.
Having funds go to your specific bank, then having to transfer monies making cash flow delay for the practice by several days. Very time consuming to find correct insurance plans, need a way to identify insurance payor by EDI number. Customer service needs required long hold times and we feel this was a significantly poor use of our staff time.

We have been using Athena for over 5 years. We are satisfied and would recommend it.
Their customer service is exceptional to a different EHR we previously had. I have not had one person who was not in the United States. You can always speak to a live person. I have yet to have any calls outsourced to a foreign country. The Streamlined clinical portion is quite simple, as with everything there is a learning curve.
No onsite training. Impression was given that maybe you would need less staff, however we did not feel this was the case for our practice. Too many features you do not use or have time to use in a busy office.

Overall, Athena is good enough to select as an EMR for urgent care after you put in hundreds of hours to get it set up how you would like it. If just starting out, Athena would not be my first choice. There are other better options that perform better and costs less. Once you start with Athena, it's hard to switch EMR's bc of the lockbox and the fact of losing all patient data.
- I like the ability to customize "most things" in Athena. It would be nice to have more flexibility to customize layouts like the classic version of Athena. - Once you create templates, the charting can be completed fairly quickly. - Epocrates is built into the Athena order screen.
- Only 1 person at a time may enter and/or complete orders. - Expensive % of collections cost. - Not geared towards Urgent Care. - Minimal reporting options for the clinical side.
