Generally Good Product; NOT a fan of Streamlined

Reviewed 8 years ago

Overall, I think Athena was a very good product. It is my only EMR experience so I have nothing to compare it to; however, I find it was easy to learn and maneuver. Our entire staff is truly struggling with the Chart portion and having to click around multiple times to arrive at a place that used to take one click. I do not like the new release.

Pros

No pros were added to this review

Cons

We have just begun to use the new Streamlined release. We are extremely unhappy with the "Chart" portion of the release. I want the previous Face Sheet back on the Chart so I can, much more quickly, find and access what I need from the Chart. I tried to make a comment to his effect on the available Blog, and it wouldn't take my comment. VERY frustrating!

Athena promises the moon, fails to deliver--a BI perspective

Reviewed 8 years ago
Pros

Some aspects of the data warehouse feed make extracting data easier.

Cons

I will leave aside the fact that days in AR has gone up dramatically, and we have had to increase training for our billing department and hire new billing staff since Athena implementation, contrary to their ROI assessment. And leaving aside the many errors that we have found in the built-in reporting, there is no support, and I mean absolutely zero support, for the data warehouse feed, in spite of...

Pretty Good on the Clinical Side

Reviewed 4 years ago

Converted from GE Centricity after 15 years. Athena allowed us to streamline the patient intake and exam documentation due to excellent tools to improve documentation quality and consistency making it easy for providers to see patients efficiently.

Pros

The chart is easy to navigate to locate information and the intake and exam workflows make improve patient visit workflow

Cons

It does not allow mapping of lab values to fields in the clinical forms used for intake and exam workflows. Scheduling platform is very suboptimal

Excellent

Reviewed 7 years ago
Pros

Combination of billing functionality, EHR and practice management software. Percentage of revenue is charged: if we don't get paid, they don't get paid. Exceedingly robust system with limitless opportunities for expansion and customizing. Excellent customer service.

Cons

Very few things to dislike. When problems require the Rules team to get involved, the process can take weeks. As an example, our state Medicaid recently changed their claim formatting requirements. It becomes a real problem for Athena to take weeks for Rules to make claim formatting compliant.

Keeps us going!

Reviewed 8 years ago

I have been using this program for about 4 years now. I was nervous at the beginning, because I thought I would be overwhelmed with it, but I wasn't! I have used a few different medical programs and Athena is by far the easiest to use. Also the layout is perfect for busy workflows. We are a busy office and all the features it provides, helps us to be as productive as we can. The only issue that really sticks out is that it sometimes can run slow and sometimes things get scanned into the chart from the fax in a weird way. Overall, I do believe this is a good quality product for a medical group.

Pros

*Easy to use. *Lots of features. *Great Layout. *Constantly updating its users.

Cons

*Sometimes slow *Faxes mess up

Appears to be one of the best, from provider standpoint

Reviewed 8 years ago

I've been utilizing this product for approx. six months. It is quite easy to learn the basics, and I like that the product is customizable in so many ways. As with all EMRs, there is a learning curve - initial basic usability comes quite easily. I have not yet learned all the nuances and tricks. Most things are common sense. We are a free clinic, and therefore do not utilize the entirety of billing....

Pros

Customizable physical exams and treatment plans. Flowsheet ability for a variety of diagnoses. Reporting capability is easy. Downtime is negligible. Overall very robust EHR

Cons

Minor issues - would like ability to group labs (e.g. labs ordered today but to be done in 6 weeks - my poor nurse has to deal with all of these). Would like something on med list or status for patients who are currently breastfeeding. Would like LMP right on check-in/vitals screen for women.

Too big to care about small practices

Reviewed 8 years ago
Pros

It's a very robust EHR and practice management tool with every feature under the sun that you could want.

Cons

Over the past 5 years we have been a client, our practice has had numerous account managers and every time they re-assign us to a new one, they get worse and worse. Less knowledgeable about the product, less responsive to our emails and calls etc. They've stopped doing regular check-ins every quarter or even year like the used to. They don't help us implement new features like credit card processing,...

Best so far

Reviewed 8 years ago

This is my second EHR for my practice and I also use Epic for inpatient work at hospital. I have looked at many EHRs and there is no such thing as the perfect one. However, Athena meets my needs most of the time and is by far the best of the bunch I have encountered to date.

Pros

Fairly easy to use and fairly Mac friendly. The billing side of the service is fantastic and best in class as far as I can tell. They could not do a better job of making sure I get all of my money - payments as well as incentives.

Cons

Template and Macro generation is a bit clunky. Really all the same stuff one can encounter with just about any EHR.

OVERALL ATHENA IS A GREAT BILLING TOOL, THE AREAS ARE USER FRIENDLY AND THE HELP DESK IS GREAT IN RESOLUTIONS. HAVE BEEN A GREAT COMPANY TO WORK WITH. THE CUSTOMER SERVICE STAFF IS EXCELLENT AND USUALLY AM ABLE TO TALK TO THE SAME PEOPLE. THE MOST RECENT UPDATES WERE NOT MY FAVORITE AND HAVE HAD ISSUES WITH THEM, DID CONTACT THE INTERFACE TEAM FOR HELP IN ADJUSTING A FEW CHANGES THAT WERE MADE THAT IS NOT A POSITIVE CHANGE FOR OUR PRACTICE

Pros

Cons

HAD SOME RECENT UPDATES THAT I AM SURE WERE ON OUR HOME PAGE, BUT WERE A GREAT SHOCK WHEN PUT INTO PRACTICE! NOT ABLE TO DO ALL THE WEBINAR TRAINING ETC... AS IN OUR PRACTICE I NOT ONLY DO THE BILLING BUT AM THE NURSE IN THE OFFICE.

I Recommend Athena

Reviewed 8 years ago

I have transitioned companies 8 times now through paper charts to emr, or from emr to emr. By far, the transition to Athena has been the easiest one I have been involved with thus far! Athena is easy to use, easy to customize and easy to track and do reports to keep our business moving forward.

Pros

Athena is customizable and everything you do is trackable.

Cons

Support, when we first joined Athena in 2011 was IMMEDIATE. Now, I have a request in for help and it went in last April and is still not resolved. I have had a few URGENT items that Athena has taken over a month to resolve, when it really needed to be resolved that day or next day.

Partners for Life

Reviewed 11 years ago

This is a great company with amazingly smart people working with us everyday to make our lives easier at work. I cannot imagine choosing any other company, and I did a ton of research and due diligence. Athena is a company which sees the future and takes us there with them. We all love the products and the company. You will too!

Pros

The beauty of athenaClinicals is that there is only one version of athenaClinicals, and that is the updated version. They update for us and it is constantly being updated. The great thing about athena is that you don't "buy" it, you are basically a subscriber and they do all the updates, all the back office work for you. The implementation process went beautifully, we worked really hard to get...

Cons

Athena is a monthly expense and not cheap, but we feel we get more than our money's worth . Financially we are doing very well as a matter of fact, we have never done better

Nobody at Athena cares about small business with one doctor

Pros

Somewhat simple to use for basic tasks like input of patient for front desk, clinical and billing codes Not up to standard billing: Do NOT TRUST your business with Athena health

Cons

No help with claims or billing . They lie! Multiple claims in hold for computer issues /problems that they NEVER fix: You will NOT get PAID unless you have a person looking and working claim buckets to watch your claims go in bucket for credentials , even if you are they want to redo it and will not let claim process

Nightmare from day one!! Athena does not know PT/OT business.

Reviewed 8 years ago
Pros

After a year of calls and trail and error, some reporting on metric data is good.

Cons

Integration to system provided by Athena folks that did not know the system. Athena has very little under standing of PT/OT and no understanding of WC billing in PA. You the provider or company must configure everything and you better learn HTML coding. Help from CSC is useless, nice people, but no help. Billing is a nightmare, if you have any special contracts with payors they can't adjust. Over...

The right decision

Reviewed 10 years ago
Pros

The product is user-friendly in that it is rather intuitive. Navigation through athena is logical, which helps in finding data or achieving other tasks. I particularly like that, where necessary, I can click a button, and data from a previous patient visit will populate the current encounter. A big plus is that it is customizable - a feature I took advantage of. One thing that I really appreciate is...

Cons

Occasionally, when I verify a patient's Medicare eligibility, athena states that another insurance is primary. To double-check, I will go to the connex.ngsmedicare.com website, and I'll find that the patient's Medicare is fine.

Very Disappointed with this EHR and their billing.

Reviewed 6 years ago

Our billing is also done through this system. Waste a of money. This is a huge disappointment. I spend too much time researching modifiers and trying to make sense of computer generated billing instructions telling me to see this rule or that rule. These are issues that a billing company is supposed to take care of. Need to talk to someone on the phone to resolve an issue? Good luck. Would be much better off to just hire a billing/coding person to work in the office.

Pros

Well, it is an electronic record so i have to consider that a pro. I really cannot think of any other pros.

Cons

Total Lack of Support. You cannot just call to speak to someone. You must first go through multiple questions and drop down boxes to direct and then you can receive an access code which is required to actually speak to someone. More often than not, the person isn't aware of how to help with your situation and has to go speak to someone else while you remain on hold.

Billing is okay, AR is not

Reviewed 6 months ago
Pros

Billing is fairly easy to work through and train on. Navigation is alright, but there could be some shortcut implemented.

Cons

You pay for both the program AND athena employees to work your claims. They honestly don't have the skills and knowledge to effectively manage the AR.

Athena Health reminder calls

Reviewed 8 years ago

The Athena reminder call service saves our employees time to care for our patient's in the office and not leaving messages all day on a recording. Especially with multiple doctors in the office now. Thank you Athena Health for your top notch service.

Pros

Billing is easy for us. I like the reminder call service. Entering a patient is easy as well

Cons

I definitely wish there was a better training for the templates. I struggle with 19 templates to extend our schedule quarterly and wish I could get assistance with a faster way to do this. We have 3 doctors and they come and go. This makes my job difficult.

Seamless handles incoming clinical information such as labs, x rays, scans, consults that would otherwise overflow the fax or mail are now seamlessly integrated with the patient chart.

Pros

Always connected with the details of my patient care. Handles everything everywhere including built in electronic prescribing. Handy app for smartphones. Streamlined and intuitive use. Works great with Dragon medical voice recognition software.

Easy to use but has flaws

Reviewed 6 years ago

Overall, it keeps medical charts organized and it is easy to update and change information. They do try to update the software regularly, so that is nice.

Pros

It is generally easy to use. A recent update in the last year, so the layout is much improved. It is pretty user-friendly.

Cons

First, there is not enough security in terms of being able to secure certain types of notes to keep them from being accessible to people within your network. Second, when you send patient cases back and forth, there is no notification of new notes on an open case.

Athena EMR

Reviewed 6 years ago

I like that it is comprehensive for scheduling, charting, and billing so there is no need to go between multiple programs, however it does have some flaws that impact workflow.

Pros

Easy to enter patient data and I like that there is a tab to access meaningful use as a reminder for screenings/vaccines/etc. that the patient is due for. Also excellent for maximizing billable services.

Cons

I don't like that you can't be in the patient's chart and keep the daily schedule open on the side to keep track of patient arrivals while you are charting.

Good product

Reviewed 8 years ago

Transition to AthenaHealth and working with the product has been relatively easy. Patient's chart is on one page, no need to open endless smaller windows. Electronic faxing definitely cut down on the office consumption of the paper. I have been working with AthenaHealth for 3.5 years now and will not change it for any other EMR.

Pros

Cloud based - easy to work from home, updates show up automatically. Fantastic support!!! Flow of the patient visits are nice. Easy to see current and historical prescriptions.

Cons

Searching for inbox faxed documents is not easy. Faxing out only to a single recipient.
