Pros

Customer support is great, not a software that we will recommend to other practices that reach out to us inquiring software that is the best for their practice.
Customer support is superb, especially compared to the practice management software we were using prior. Therapy Notes constantly improves and updates, adding both free and paid features.
Billing is so easy and it gives you billing at your finger tips, it is user friendly and the staff is awesome on assisting if you are not sure how to utilize all the features.

Pros

Love the calendar feature where it syncs with my Google calendar. Love the reminders for client appointments and how they can manage their own appointments.
I like the fact that we no longer have to have paper files, ease of use overall and some of the features like appointment reminders, the ability to create and add your own documents.
This software is richly featured. I've appreciated the ability to create very sophisticated custom online intake forms, and and the autopay enrollment for automated batch credit card billings.

Cons

I am struggling with it, at this time however, because I am having to (at 53 y.o) learn how to do my own billing and am often lost in these very spooky woods alone.
I have 2 complaints having used one of TherapyNotes competitors at my previous practice. One, I miss having an app on my phone.
One more complaint: I have been a psychologist for over 25 years.

Cons

I have struggled most with billing—getting cards to not charge for missed appointments. Reminders have occasionally caught me off guard—either they went out too many times or not enough.
This annoyed me because my time is very valuable and I specifically set aside the time for my training and no one bothered to alert me that it had been canceled.
My main complaint is that I have had trouble getting someone on the phone when I have an issue. They do tend to respond by email quickly but sometimes I would prefer a phone conversation.

Cons

I would love to have some treatment plan prompts added. That is what I liked about SimplePractice.

Brief Experience

TherapyNotes is a great option but needs to remain competitive with the growing market of EHR. I would recommend it, but unless it's price changes, it was easier to choose the alternative option.

Pros

This software is great for a private practice. It has all the necessary features like scheduling, payments, an easy to use client portal, and of course documentation. The formatting was use friendly, attractive, and intuitive. As a solo practitioner, there were many features I did not have the opportunity to use that I am sure would have been useful for a larger practice (non-clinical staff features).

Cons

The features were very similar to SimplePractice, which at the time of sign up, was cheaper. TherapyNotes charged for client reminders, .14 cents per reminder. That can really add up! I also believe that the credit card payment is more expensive through Therapynotes. Therapynotes also does not offer a secure messaging system, which has been helpful for communicating with my patients.

Despite my detailed list of "cons," I'm pretty happy with the software. It gets the job done, and is very affordable.

Pros

I am grateful to the TherapyNotes team for making this software available to me at a discount. I provide pro bono services 1x/week, through Give an Hour, to a military family. This software allows me to do all my clinical documentation. Setup was simple, and the support team checked in frequently to make sure I wasn't having any problems.

Cons

There are a couple of areas for improvement. First, compared to software such as SimplePractice, the ability to format notes is very, very limited. Also along those lines, the documents you need (e.g., informed consents, intake forms, etc.), you generally have to go and find or make. SimplePractice gives you tons of forms and powerful abilities to change your forms to your needs. That being said, the...

I wish I had started with a different program. I am not satisfied. I am not all that computer literate and just want something that gets the job done, and I'm too entrenched (and lazy?) to go to something else like SimplePractice. One more complaint: I have been a psychologist for over 25 years. I don't need the condescending ways that TherapyNotes literally PREVENTS YOU from, rather than cautions...

Pros

I like the electronic billing feature and the fact that it receives and allows recording of Electronic Remittance Advice from payers; the scheduling feature; ease of entering initial billing information from electronic ERAs (though there are other huge problems with billing); some aspects of the notes section; customer support by phone (but not via email); hours available for phone support, including weekend; other areas I'm not thinking of at the moment. Even though I can't recommend it, I do think it has many strengths.

Cons

(1) The billing area has countless flaws that my husband, a software developer on Mac and Windows for nearly 40 years, has called to their attention to no avail. When I note these weaknesses, they sound like it's the first time they've heard about it and "pass it on to their team." It speeds up my ability to work with clients. By being able to send my intake documents electronically and collect payment online, I can speed up my appointments and focus on what's really important with each of my clients.

Pros

I have used TherapyNotes for about 2 years, and I looked into SimplePractice when starting my own practice. I was immediately impressed by how many of the amazing features come with no extra charge. It's incredibly easy to use and I like it so much more than TherapyNotes. Better price too!

Cons

I really don't have any complaints about the software. Occasionally I get a little confused at where different features are located, but that's to be expected as I'm switching from a different system. No issues here!

Pros

Beautiful SIMPLE, elegant GUI interface! Sync calendar functions Spell check Form templates and ability to customize or design your own--rocks, eh?? Right! Client portal!!!! Clients can securely message you, you them , arrange to pay their bills AND sign all their forms!

Cons

Need Wiley Treatment Planners and Progress Notes added (they say they're planning this) Need drop down menus and check boxes for repetitive, required chart data Better interface for the DSM/ICD 10

I enjoy the ease of functioning that SimplePractice provides. I can upload my intake documentation and require electronic signature instead of paying for DocuSign or another platform for signature purposes.

Cons

I enjoy TherapyNotes formatting of notes and options given for assessment each note; however, SimplePractice allow you to create your own which was helpful.

I love the daily emails that give me the weather and my schedule!! Not to mention the sleek, fresh look of the layout! I was using therapynotes prior to switching to SimplePractice and it was a bit sterile. Happy to make the change!

I wish there was an easier way to import clients from other software that may have been utilized prior to using SP

What kept me with SimplePractice instead of TherapyNotes or TheraNest was the ability to make a variety of completely customized forms and upload your own forms, allowing me to make my ENTIRE practice paperless. If you want full control this is for you.

Cons

The app for your phone is not as robust as some of the others. It is more work to set up if you want a lot of standard fillable forms or a complex progress note.

They do not offer phone support which is a serious barrier

Overall the format is user friendly, however the last of phone support is a serious problem and has made it very difficult to resolve individual problems, particularly with billing and superbills. This is a significant weakness and I am considering switching back to Therapynotes because of this, even though I prefer SP format.

Cons

No phone support. There are many small issues with how to make changes on superbills after submitted, problems with Stripe billing and other barriers that require individualized support which is not provided.

I am new to private practice and am turning toward SimplePractice

I choose SimplePractice to build, organize, and bill insurance for my new private practice over TherapyNotes which all my colleagues are using because of it's design, mission, capacities and customer service to therapists. I am excited to use it, unlike everyother EHR which is outdated and too cluttered.

Pros

User friendly face and easy to understand video instructions!

Cons

So many functions to learn. I am wanting to plan ahead to bill insurance and get started with insurance companies, especially Medicaid, but as far as I understand, I am not able to do so until I have clients.

Definitely an Upgrade

It eliminates the need for a front desk/front office. All the scheduling and billing can be done via SimplePractice.

Pros

It goes way beyond the basics. I've used TherapyNotes for years at the group practice I was in, so I originally thought I would just stick with that. I figured I would check out SimplePractice and it has exceeded my expectations. I can do so much more with it for the included price than I could with TherapyNotes. I love being able to keep all my notes and forms in the same place - the client portal makes it so easy for clients to fill out their paperwork. I also love that they can chose to enter their credit card information and SimplePractice can automatically charge them for their appointments (my least favorite part about counseling). Having appointment reminders (text or call, and email) included is the cherry on top.

Cons

It's a little difficult to learn, but the customer service is really helpful. There are a lot of helpful videos and articles too. The only thing (and this is really small) that I liked better about TherapyNotes was that I could put an alert on an appointment to remind me something about the client (ex. "Dad pays this time", or "Coming in with Mother").

Simple and Intuitive to Use Compared to Other Options Out There

SimplePractice has overall been very easy to use and has made my practice very efficient. It does take a little investment of time to learn and get used to and I am still on the learning curve but overall I find it really intuitive and easy to use. I also really like the look and feel of the interface. It feels clean and professional.

Pros

I found SimplePractice to be far easier and more intuitive to use than some of the other options out there (TherapyNotes and TheraNest were two others that I tried and did not like so much). I also like that SimplePractice uses Stripe to process payments as it made accepting payments streamlined and easy--I do not have to sign up for a third party payment processor and pay an additional monthly fee like you do with some of the other options out there.

Cons

I still have issues with getting my SimplePractice calendar to show up on my android device. Though it is synced with my Google Calendar for some reason I Cannot get this to translate over to my mobile device. This really bothers me as I don't like that I have to check two calendars when I am trying to quickly check my availability. (I realize this may be due to something I am overlooking on my part, but I haven't been able to figure it out yet.)

Overall, the experience is very positive, great product.

Pros

1) Electronic forms is their strength, love this. 2) Well thought out workflow, they don't shoe-horn a particular way to take notes like TherapyNotes (They offer options in Simple practice). 3) Excellent vision to offer website hosting, very advance thinking on your part simple practice. 4) Credit card integration is very well done. 5) Ability to treat couples as a separate entity from single-clients also love this. 6) Forum to allow clients to vote on features that clients like, this is great.

Cons

1) No Multi-factor authentication option yet, this is a security concern in my opinion, my clients are complaining about this. Unfortunately, this is still not very high-voted in the community driven Prioritization process, I hope they will see the importance of this soon. 2) Their only option for credit card processing is Stripe, which charges 3% (therapy notes has lower credit card processing fee as of today, we just switched over). 3) The telehealth does not support multi-way calling yet. (minor, I can find alternative products for this).

Overall simple practice has been very good. I was used to using TherapyNotes which has some different features. But I like having the client portal. Navigating has sometimes been a bit tricky- I can never seem to recall where to go to send clients certain messages, or where certain forms are to be edited. I think that will come with continued use, but I feel sometimes like I am clicking through 5-6 different tabs before I find the right page that I am looking for. So while it seems to have all the features I want, I sometime have trouble finding where those features are.
