Pros

It is basically every thing you need for client management, including billing/invoicing, calendar, document and financial management, record management, task management, even time tracking. You name it!

Cons

Its UX is a little complicated since it has so many features and possibilities. It could be a little pricey, but if your office is medium to big, the benefits would be greater.

Cons: No document assembly; you can only link one person to the client portal; glitches in program- the program emailed an invoice to the wrong person; can not email through program; glitch- I had to give access to everyone for everything because the limited access features did not work; customer service is not the best; calandar portion has glitches when it interfaces with gmail and office 365.

Pros

Its like having Quickbooks and a practice management program in one.

Cons

Lots of glitches: (a) it emailed an invoice to the wrong person; (b) user restrictions do not work in my office; (c) calendar is not on the main page- usability is difficult for some tasks; (d) you can only have one person assigned to the client portal.

I needed a one stop shop for case management

As a solo practitioner, I needed a one stop shop for case management, calendaring, and also accounting. I don't have a large staff and I work from two offices, so I needed all of my information available in one place that was accessible from my laptop.

Pros

As a solo practitioner, I needed a one stop shop for case management, calendaring, and also accounting. Rather than pay for Clio (which I had before) and quickbooks, I get both in one with cosmolex.

Cons

1) A report of total hours/billing that includes both invoiced and non invoiced with the total hours and total dollars due at the end. 2) A prettier, more user friendly (don't have to click an edit button to open something) interface.

As a solo/small firm general practitioner, the ease of use with a cloud-based system where we can login from anywhere and update and manage client matters and billing is very convenient and practical.

This App is Geared More Towards Transactional Law Practices

Pros

The company is generally pretty good about responding to its customers inquiries; but, you typically have to wait about 4 to 6 hours or the next day or two for a technical support person to call you back and sometimes they don't. The billing features are great for a small transactional law practice or family law practice, but not so much for a firm that handles heavy amounts of civil litigation for commercial clients, which requires reporting and data feed back.

Cons

The biggest Con is that there is a clear the lack of usable reports, no way to export client data for analysis and forecasting, third party integrations with Office is a work in progress for 2+ years and Cosmolex should absolutely not be relied on for Case Management in a litigation practice.

We have previously used some SQL based accounting software, but Cosmolex's user interfaces make our accounting much more accurate.

Pros

Also, just having a system with set rules on how to input data keeps our financial data clean and accurate for auditing.

Cons

I was trying to update the email to which we sent Invoices yesterday, and I could see the matter's associated email on the dashboard, but could not seem to locate a how to article in the knowledge base.

Pros

Full accounting integration was a big factor.

Cons

For all of the effort directed towards making it easy to bill clients and see where your time is going, the lack of document assembly kind of negates whatever efficiency advantages you would otherwise gain with those other features.

My previous software was constantly requiring me to contact engineering support for data integrity issues.

Pros

Complete practice software with front and back office accounting links emails to clients/matters automatically integrates with Office 365, LawPay and other applications I use Cloud based so I can access it from anywhere

Cons

Dedicated Accounts payable functions to streamline entry of invoices from vendors The ability to enter additional fields for client information that is essential to a case particularly in family law I am still learning the software but there are some areas particularly in set up that are hard to find the ability to hide or add tabs at the dashboard level

Cosmolex was the only bookkeeping software that was law society compliant and which was cloud-based that offered client management, docketing and all bookkeeping functions, as well as additional functionality that just makes all our lives much easier.

Cons

Additional reports for collections such as a list of clients with WIP with A/R and trust balance, as well as referral tracking.

Pros

Cosmolex is currently the only viable option for the Canadian marketplace without having to use cumbersome workarounds and fixes to integrate with Accounting software and it hasn't disappointed.

Cons

Adding the ability to add billing addresses at the matter level so that a client can be billed to different addresses (for example if you have an individual client but also want to send invoices to their company.

We chose Cosmolex for the trust accounting feature.

Pros

I love the billing and trust accounting features.

Cons

If I'm in Bob Jones' case, I want to see a list of all the other people involved such as other attorneys, witnesses, or other relevant parties. With Cosmolex, one has to go to a separate contacts page and link them rather than entering the information directly into the matter.

Recommendations to others considering CosmoLex

I've used Amicus in the past for personal injury cases and a program called Case Advantage for workers' compensation cases. In Amicus I couldn't search the notes without cut and pasting them into a Word document, but I found the contacts so much easier to manipulate and enter, especially in cases where there are many players. I often need a list of medical providers and Cosmolex doesn't make that listing very easy to create. We will definitely be keeping Cosmolex for its awesome accounting, but I'm working on convincing my law partner to invest in another software for case management.

Not only do I earn more money because I'm able to quickly track time and expenses, but I also deliver a better product.

Pros

Ease of use, the simplicity of timecards, layout/design, price, functionality across multiple practice areas, ethical compliance considerations, cyber security protection, and mobility.

Cons

Lack of knowledge by customer support, inability of 24/7 customer support access, inadequate and burdensome contact importing process, access to library of forms and templates with incorporated merge fields, failure of bank integration for purposes of deposits, no app available, not synced with lexicata or another CRM service, doc mgmt could use some navigational ease of use improvement, no place for employees to insert their time for purposes of payroll, no spell checker, inability to make a matter designated as anything other than inactive or active (nice if had more options, such as closed cases, prospective lead, consultation only, referred out), migration of emails into cosmolex, lack of automatic matching of emails to correct corresponding client file (doesn't exist retroactive to joining Cosmolex at all, and once joined, the automatic email matching is rare but is much more usually manual entry, automatic base fee for commonly used tasks and expenses that would automatically be applied to each type of case's invoice for example, fax $2.50, copy cost 30 cents per page, courier fee $5.00, postage cost of $10.00, generate and open file $15, $10 document retention fee, and legal research $20.00, additional permissions for each user based on more than is listed under "role," label generator, sync with efax and adobe sign and google for work, ability to mark certain case documents as confidential and/or only for internal viewing purposes.

I can make this system better. But, it is already well beyond its counterparts and is arguably the next big leader in legal tech practice management. It will give me the ability as a lawyer to practice law remotely and live a more enjoyable life meanwhile providing a quality work product and solid results for my clients.

Pros

CosmoLex can properly deal with our HST/GST/PST issues and payments as well as offer us accrual based accounting as we are required to use by law.

Cons

Also helpful would be the ability to attach scanned receipts, cheques, and bills to accounting entries similar to the functionality in QuickBooks.

I just started my own firm and needed an economical billing system.

Pros

This product contains everything that I need to easily bill clients. It allows me to keep track of my time on a daily basis and also does a great job keep track of my operating account and trust account.

Cons

I think that it can sometimes be a little difficult to send out the first set of bills and to invoice the clients, especially for clients that had already provided a retainer.
