AWS CloudFormation Features

- Templates are written in a YAML subset, which is arguably preferable to JSON - It provides many options to properly manage the stacks lifecycle - When coupling with Cloud Development Kit, it makes up for a powerful IaC solution for AWS - As with any other AWS service, you can manage CloudFormation in the best way that fancy your team needs

- It's hard to understand that some resources that are possible to tag, don't support tagging in the templates - Templates can get complex over time

Scaling up! It's so easy to scale up and scale down your EC2 instance depending on your requirement at any particular time. This saves your costs hourly and in the long run.

Not much is wrong with CloudFormation on AWS. However, it is not easy for a first-time no-code builder to deploy an error-free stack. You have to know what you are doing when deploying a stack or updating it! As a no-code builder like myself, I made many mistakes setting up my first stack. So please watch tutorials and go through enough learning material and equip yourself to deploy your stack correctly.

there are many features which makes the layout climsyit has ocassional server runtime crashesand it is too much expensive as comppared to its competators like google and microsoft azure

AWS CloudFormation is a infrastructure-as-code solution that allows you to bootstrap infrastructure and services within the AWS space. It contains a very comprehensive set of features to build out infrastructure with the necessary security controls and service integrations that you would need.

AWS CloudFormation has a steep learning curve for a service that only supports AWS.

providing a configuration, provisions the cloud resource as required very instantly. saves a lot of time. can also export existing resource as configuration

can provide integrations with ide tools like extension for VS Code for even simpler interface.

The feature that are most impactful is the compatibility with multiple services. You can simple write a template and deploy entire environments in minutes form servers to databases. If you use Amazon's CDK you can take it a step further and write infrastructure as code in languages like typescript or python. The CDK then deploys directly to cloudformation.

What I like least about cloudformation are the error messages. Occasionally they can be a bit vague, which of course makes debugging take longer than it should. This happens most often when permissions/roles are off.

CloudFormation helped us build our infrastructure quickly and reliably on AWS. Without much knowledge about infrastructure or AWS, we could use the documentation, references, and code samples of CloudFormation stacks provided by AWS and the OSS community to build our infrastructure. CloudFormation templates cannot have complex logic, making them easy to understand, but this limited logic support sometimes forced us to create separate files for our development and production environments.

It's a fast way to create infrastructure in AWS. Also, since Cloudformation can be setup in multiple stacks, it is easy to maintain.

Many times the CloudFormation deployment fails after trying for a long time, which is frustrating. Also, the error messages are not easy to understand.

Template builder, Infrastructure Provisioning, Stack Visibility, History and Tracking.

Sometimes stacks takes time to delete due to correlation of resources. Need to delete resources manually.

AWS has a great CMS IAM were easy to use to add users . Setting admins and restrictions to Accounts were easy to setup up.

2 factor authentication sometime would rest multiple times durning server run time which causes disrubtions .wehn scaling up servers you may get over charged .

This service is a great way to look at the recent build, deployment logs for your services deployed on the cloud in various environments.

The builds sometimes take more time in running and the deployment logs are not displayed. Sometimes the stacks needs to be deleted if it can't be rollbacked.

CloudFormation can be complex and difficult to learn, especially for users who are new to AWS.

With some level of AWS experience, I was able to start using cloud formation. As I got experience with other AWS services I could easily map it to my Cloud Formation stack. So basically my cloud formation skills grow at the same time as my AWS skills grows.

I was hoping this tool also support a basic editor view which allows me to design my AWS architecture without providing all the details. More like draw.io functionality. I'd like to keep all my AWS design artifacts in AWS other than back and forth between draw.io and AWS cloud formation

Agility and change management are the key features which helps daily. Also having code controlling things always gives more confidence which is great

CloudFormation makes managing AWS resources a breeze. Consistent deployments across all regions has been an absolute game changer. The interface is very user friendly

Deleting resources can sometimes be a pain. It would be good to have a "force delete" option that will blitz resources regardless of the deletion policy.

Availability of pre existing templates is very useful in configuring the services quickly. Super useful and easy. Roll back feature is also awesome!

Very rarely the stack gets stick without showing an error and stays that way until it fails. Slightly annoying.

CloudFormation, like many other services, is designed for AWS from the ground up. It's supported by the developers, and it shows in how you're able to roll back changes, etc, which can't be done with Terraform.

The syntax is significantly more confusing (to me) than Terraform. HashiCorp's HCL makes it a lot easier to write and visualize what I'm trying to create. CloudFormation only works on AWS; if you'll be working on anything else, you'll have to learn a different tool.

It is very rich and inclued almost all of AWS services. The GUI is very good and the outcome looks great. It validates the architecture very well and provides proper warning and suggestions as needed.

There is a learning curve with this tool. Even as an experienced DevOps person you need to spend good amount of time to learn important features of this tool.

Easy to implement, needs to know either of the 2 languages- Yml, json. Extensive documentation and customer support. Always enhancing features.

No 'ideal' programming language which leads to learning either yaml/JSON. Debugging issues in CloudFormation templates is time consuming.

Using with my developer team and easily i can say that, precise integrations and templates are saved our product many many times with no hassle. Documentation is top notch as well, so easy to walkthrough.

Template limits would be a bit higher because we'd be need in near future.

We use this service to create multiple resources on the AWS cloud infrastructure. Like EC2, VPC, Route53, etc we create these services through CloudFormation.

Sometimes it takes more time to find the CloudFormation templates to create the resources on the AWS cloud.

Cloudformation works with YAML/JSON files and has simple syntax to build large scale applications. It works well for deploying applications across multiple regions with simple code and is very useful for development and deployment in higher enviroments of software development lifecycle where console access should be read only/restricted

Sometimes I feel the error scenarios/messages are not well handled. I spend a lot of time debugging CFT templates

It's super easy to create a cloud stack on any application. Cloud formation allows you to easily create a cloud stack, but also let's you manage security and roles easily.

When it comes to creating a cloud stack through the yaml file, thats when it gets super complicated. I really wish that they found a way to be more user friendly. It takes time to learn it before you finally get it right. Keep it in mind.
