CrashPlan

Easy, automatic cloud business backup

4.58/5 (212 reviews)

CrashPlan Feature Summary

  • Restore and back-up Files from anywhere, at anytime
  • Protect every version of every file, forever, with no limits
  • Protect critical data that lives on employee endpoints.

CrashPlan Features In Depth

Automatic Backups

Code42 CrashPlan protects every version of every file on Windows, Linux or OS X laptops and desktops. This protection lasts forever, and there are no limits on the types, sizes, or numbers of files that an organization or an individual employee is able to protect.

As edits are made and your files change over time, Code42 CrashPlan backs them up silently and automatically. This ensures that you retain complete access to every version of every file you’ve created on a work computer. Code42 CrashPlan even gives you access to deleted files. No VPN is necessary for file backups to take place.

Restoring Data

When a data breach occurs, Code42 CrashPlan secures the network and restores files to connected iOS and Android devices. Unlike competing solutions, Code42 CrashPlan enables its clients to restore files at any time, even when they’re outside the office. Users do not have to connect through a VPN to restore files.

While in recovery mode, Code42 CrashPlan runs audits to recover lost, leaked, and deleted data. Although most people think of data breaches occurring as a result of hackers or malware, it can also be the result of theft, employee churn, device failure, or other business-wide disasters. It can mitigate damages in any of these situations.

Self-Healing Archives

Businesses shouldn’t have to wait until a data breach has occurred before finding out that previous versions of their files are unrecoverable. Code42 CrashPlan runs regular health checks of all backup archives. This is done to ensure that backed up files can be recovered, even years after the original backup occurred.

Self-healing archives run without any interference from the end-user. Code42 CrashPlan checks for data corruption automatically. In the event that back blocks of data are discovered, the app will re-request the affected data blocks from the source device in order to self-heal the archive.

Real-Time Reporting

Real-time reporting tools enable Code42 CrashPlan users to visually monitor the health of their data systems day and night. Users can view backups, licensing, and storage on a 24/7 basis. Automated alerts and notifications are sent from the Code42 admin console in the event that a data breach or ransomware is discovered.

To create custom reports for your own organization or to integrate Code42 CrashPlan with other applications and build completely new utilities, you can use the app’s open API.

From time to time, the off prem hosted data store goes offline, only a few seconds at a time.

CrashPlan ProE

The ease of use for deployment of the application to a laptop and or desktop is seamless. The dashboard is very easy to use and has useful information right on the main page.

Pros

Low overhead of the desktop application. I love the fact that it just backs up on a set schedule and can be throttled so that it does not use a lot of bandwidth.

Cons

As we have users that only have IPADS their data is not able to be backed up at this time.

I was a fan, for a while

Having real time cloud backup fixed the problem of expecting end users to do a backup, and it provided another key to the backup triad, by being offsite.

Pros

The user interface was easy enough to use.

Cons

There are numerous reports of this and the troubleshooting steps never seemed to resolve the issue.

CrashPlan has proved to be invaluable for our organization

2016-05-04

We can control all of the client variables (versions, speed, network interfaces, etc) from the console and push out the setting to our clients individually or by orgs.

Pros

All settings and controls for all clients are configurable from one console.

Cons

In previous versions Java usage was a bit out of control, but they have had that fixed for a few versions now, so no cons at all.

Although you'll find that you don't need training to administer CrashPlan, I would recommend it since you do learn a lot from it. Ask if you can host a training camp which you may get something in return.

Great product

2015-09-17

I've been using CrashPlan on about 45 endpoints for the last year or so. It has been very reliable and does exactly what it says it does: backs up your files. I rarely have any issues with their software or the backup process.

Pros

Scheduled backup reports. Simple licensing model.

Cons

The only real issue I have is that restores have to happen over the internet -- there is no option to have a hard drive shipped to your location.

Indispensable help for backing up your data

2017-07-18

I can sleep safely knowing that I can easily restore my data at any time.

Pros

It's fast at backing up my data and it's able to retain my files even if I removed them from my HDD (even on purpose).

Cons

The backup process can slow down my system, so I had to designate certain hours as backup periods. I usually do this over the weekend so during the week I get e-mail messages that my computer's not been backed up. In this case the messages are useless - they could factor in the designated backup times.

I relied on Crashplan for document backup while completing my PhD abroad.

2017-12-15

Once my data was uploaded (it took nearly a year), I was assured that my PhD research was safe.

Pros

The Crashplan client automatically backs up to ensure that customers are using the very latest client and are not in danger of security leaks.

Cons

I assume this was not the fault of Crashplan, but the result of serious Internet throttling by the internet provider or by state security apparatus in China where all connections to the outside world are severely curtailed.

Crashplan - Data Backup

2019-04-09

Our company uses Crash Plan as our data back up system in the event of a system failure.

Pros

I like that our system information is protected and we have back up availability in the event of a system failure.
