CrashPlan

Easy, automatic cloud business backup

4.55/5 (229 reviews)

CrashPlan Features In Depth

Automatic Backups

Code42 CrashPlan protects every version of every file on Windows, Linux or OS X laptops and desktops. This protection lasts forever, and there are no limits on the types, sizes, or numbers of files that an organization or an individual employee is able to protect.

As edits are made and your files change over time, Code42 CrashPlan backs them up silently and automatically. This ensures that you retain complete access to every version of every file you’ve created on a work computer. Code42 CrashPlan even gives you access to deleted files. No VPN is necessary for file backups to take place.

Restoring Data

When a data breach occurs, Code42 CrashPlan secures the network and restores files to connected iOS and Android devices. Unlike competing solutions, Code42 CrashPlan enables its clients to restore files at any time, even when they’re outside the office. Users do not have to connect through a VPN to restore files.

While in recovery mode, Code42 CrashPlan runs audits to recover lost, leaked, and deleted data. Although most people think of data breaches occurring as a result of hackers or malware, it can also be the result of theft, employee churn, device failure, or other business-wide disasters. It can mitigate damages in any of these situations.

Self-Healing Archives

Businesses shouldn’t have to wait until a data breach has occurred before finding out that previous versions of their files are unrecoverable. Code42 CrashPlan runs regular health checks of all backup archives. This is done to ensure that backed up files can be recovered, even years after the original backup occurred.

Self-healing archives run without any interference from the end-user. Code42 CrashPlan checks for data corruption automatically. In the event that back blocks of data are discovered, the app will re-request the affected data blocks from the source device in order to self-heal the archive.

Real-Time Reporting

Real-time reporting tools enable Code42 CrashPlan users to visually monitor the health of their data systems day and night. Users can view backups, licensing, and storage on a 24/7 basis. Automated alerts and notifications are sent from the Code42 admin console in the event that a data breach or ransomware is discovered.

To create custom reports for your own organization or to integrate Code42 CrashPlan with other applications and build completely new utilities, you can use the app’s open API.

Do the job, silently

2021-02-09

We were looking for a solution for real-time backup of data from our various computers without recurring manual operation.

Pros

Then the application is doing the job and backups data in real time.

Cons

The administration console is a bit austere. But ultimately, this is not what we ask of this kind of application.

If you need a way to protect and store local system data, this is by far the easiest way to do it. No need for users to manually upload to a file system or interact in any way with the product. It simply does the job. Set it and forget it.

CrashPlan ProE

The ease of use for deployment of the application to a laptop and or desktop is seamless. The dashboard is very easy to use and has useful information right on the main page.

Pros

Low overhead of the desktop application. I love the fact that it just backs up on a set schedule and can be throttled so that it does not use a lot of bandwidth.

Cons

As we have users that only have IPADS their data is not able to be backed up at this time.

Because your data is very valuable, you need to take care of how you handle it.

Pros

Schedule Versioning Remote Recovery End-User management Bandwidth Management Encryption Easy-of-User

Cons

If you have to pay 120$ per computer per year, you may look at alternative that gives other features. Sometimes, Dropbox is enough.

We backup all of our mobile users with PROe and it really has been great for us.

Pros

All settings and controls for all clients are configurable from one console.

Cons

In previous versions Java usage was a bit out of control, but they have had that fixed for a few versions now, so no cons at all.

I was a fan, for a while

2018-12-10

Having real time cloud backup fixed the problem of expecting end users to do a backup, and it provided another key to the backup triad, by being offsite.

Pros

When I first used it and installed it for customers, it worked well and was a reasonable price. The user interface was easy enough to use.

Cons

There are numerous reports of this and the troubleshooting steps never seemed to resolve the issue.

Enterprise feature set, mid-market ease of use

2015-10-01

Minimal learning curve. End user adoption not a challenge.

Pros

The product works as advertised and our end users like which means they use it which means our data is safe.

Cons

There is a cost and the pace of updates means your ops team will upgrade multiple times per year. While they are painless, they still require attention to perform and ensure stability.

Buyer Beware of Recent Changes to the Services for Small Business !

2019-05-23

I have spent days on the phone with their technical support management to no avail.

Pros

Until recently, Crashplan for Small Business was very reliable.

Cons

My company’s financial data was stored by our 3rd party Unix app in that directory and Code42 just randomly excluded it from backup, even though it was in the USER directory, and deleted ALL PREVIOUS BACKUPS without permission. Apparently they sent this information out in a “newsletter” to their business clients in Mid April, and implemented the change on May 1.

CrashPlan PROe can save your sanity

2016-01-13

We weren't able to save that desktop data, but we wanted it to be the last time an admin loses so much work in a single incident.

Pros

It provides a fantastic sense of reassurance to some of our most sensitively-placed users with a nearly invisible roll out.

Cons

We also had an issue with password resets on the dashboard for our admins, but we resolved that by having it use LDAP to authenticate.

Great product

2015-09-17

I've been using CrashPlan on about 45 endpoints for the last year or so. It has been very reliable and does exactly what it says it does: backs up your files. I rarely have any issues with their software or the backup process.

Pros

Scheduled backup reports. Simple licensing model.

Cons

The only real issue I have is that restores have to happen over the internet -- there is no option to have a hard drive shipped to your location.
