I tried various cloud IDEs and did not find any that was fast enough and understood correctly my projects. But it's a thing of the past now, Codenvy is fast and great !

There is one thing to try : the run part with Docker at its core !

Finally a working Cloud IDE

I tried codenvy for personnal development.
It permits to code, link to git small or big software also in C++.
It is also very useful to personalize compilation chain using cmake through Docker.
I just began trying using it, but now i have an IDE everywhere :D

Cloud IDE

Starting to play with it at work and am now using it for some of my small/medium projects.  It's very easy to load code in and start going right away.  I am using it to deploy java webapps to a tomcat container.  Codenvy allows you to actually deploy a tomcat instance in a docker container for free.  Setup takes about 10 minutes, and after that you're ready to go.  The docker instance only lives for about 10 minutes.  I've found this to be sufficient when testing features.

The cloud IDE is  really fast for what it is, but possibly isn't quite as snappy as a high-end development machine.  I tried using it with a giant work project, and wasn't able to make it work.

I'm using Codenvy for developing ongoing personal apps, when not in my main development station. While it's really complete and effectively comfortable, it has it's limitations. The first that really struck me, is that you don't have search/replace. Other keyboard shortcuts are either obscure, or inexistent.
For small projects, it's totally recommendable, but it may not be a great option for enterprise-grade projects.

Yay for small, nay for enterprise.

This is a great product that is almost there. We have started using it for little open source products. Its pretty easy to have one dev setup the project, and the others just clone the codenvy project. We are up and running in no time.  I love that it is using Docker, and that you can provide your own docker run scripts.

Thank you for the thoughtful and detailed review.  We can confirm that we are working on a number of improvements to the product (we release >3x per month).  We are also going to be changing our purchasing model so that it's completely automated and doesn't require speaking to Sales - this should be coming in several weeks.

Overall I think this is a good contender. I've used Nitrous.io, Codeanywhere, Cloud9, and Koding. The ability to use Dockerfiles alone is a big bonus. And once over the learning curve, it was nice to have a GUI to get through some tasks. However if you're comfortable and frequently drop to cli, I think there's a bit more adjustment time.  I'd recommend it if you use Docker or want to use Docker. 

Good GUI drive Cloud Workspace

Just stumbled across code envy recently while looking at other cloud dev alternatives.
The whole process for signing up for a free tier account (512 MB) and getting something up and running couldn't have taken more than 10 or 15 minutes. As a new user, I am still playing around with it a bit but it has some great possibilities for running multiple dev environments without having to get all the pre reqs installed and configured on my own machine.

I've been looking forward to an online Java IDE since the announcement of Eclipse Orion (which support only Javascript for now) and was excited to try Codenvy. It looks promising, but it's clearly not ready for production work. From my shot experience with it, it seems like it has all the basic features for prototyping of a new simple project. But it does require some more polishing before it can be used on a real-size project. I think I'll use it mainly for playing around with Docker.

The closest thing to a real Java IDE in the Cloud, but not ready for production

I had a really good experience with codenvy till now. 

I used it mainly for its consistent automation of infrastructure. Its docker based environment underneath is really nicely implemented. It does what it claims and does it really well.

Cloudnvy - Efficient Docker enabled  DevOps 

Codenvy is a fantastic application, where you can create a skeleton and configure workspace for most common/modern projects using browser, and user it everywhere. I'm using it for my private projects and it's perfect solution if you are using multiple computers. All you need to do is to open a browser and that's it.

Configure once, use everywhere.  

My first lookout for software was to find a environment for my students which I can refere to them for coding without the hassle of configuration. I came across codenvy for the reason and got hooked with features. There is rarely anything that you cannot code using Codenvy; only con for me is the Android Tablet App which has caused be give a star less.

Best web based IDE I've used by far.


Awesome web based IDE.

CodeEnvy looks slick, but it has no support for Perl web applications, such as Dancer or Mojolicious.  There's no Perl syntax highlighting, and there are no pre-built Docker images for Perl.  I followed the instructions for using a custom image, but it took a long time because it needed to pull the Perl images from the Docker Registry every time (no caching).  Plus, it wasn't clear in the documentation how the application is added.  Do I need to use ADD or COPY?  What's the $app$ special variable?  

All that said, I think that I would really like CodeEnvy if they added native Perl support and improved the documentation for using custom containers.

I Have attended an induction about codenvy  by the ceo in srilanka at wso2 and i started to explore it. I personally feel its the best online IDE that i have ever worked with.what i like the most is the dedicated Docker-based machin and   It supports more languages and provides a free subscription

Codenvy a container of VM's

This IDE rocks, really. I have used almost all IDEs that exist from Eclipse to Netbeans to Jetbrains, and some cloud-based IDEs, but Codenvy is the best.

It has real-time collaboration, the setup is very easy. It has git support and integrates with GitHub and BitBucket.

And if you are a little hipster like me, it uses Docker to isolate workspaces.

But the best is  the free tier with 512 MB of RAM and unlimited workspaces, free and public projects and developers. That's awesome.

A great experience with Codenvy

I was looking at all the web IDES and codenvy kept getting mentioned. There wasn't much information on the website but I thought I would sign up and see if it fit my needs and interests. I was mainly looking for web development tools focusing on Meteor. Codenvy definitely has a lot going on and If I was building things in Angular, or ruby, android, python or c++ then I would probably be really into, however I wasn't. I did find some information on line about how to set up a docker container for Meteor but it wasn't a simple process and there are other web IDEs that fit my needs better.

A really nice developer tool but not for everyone

It really is a great cloud IDE. I couldn't find a better java cloud IDE.
it had most basic features that I needed, even code completion, which was amazing.
it's great you are able to make your own custom stack and custom build.

one issue I had with it with integrating with bitbucket because of the ssh keys. I couldn't find the documentation properly on it.

I think it's cool that it uses docker to create the server, however, I kept having to copy and paste the URL that I was testing. Every time I opened up the server, it would just open to the root. i wish there was some configuration where you can put the rest of the path in so that you didn't need to copy and paste that part in each time.

great cloud ide

When I moved over to a Chromebook a few years ago I was sifting through all the cloud IDE options and Codenvy really stuck out as the best option from the start. Through the years they have kept to their word and keep making the service better and better. The latest version is just a complete "wow!" from seeing how much the platform has grown. Yes, it's practically a platform since it has so many great features baked in besides being a higly performant IDE; Git (GitHub / Bitbucket), Docker, Bower, Google App Engine (GAE), multiple languages, starter templates, "local" datasources, etc.! The portability of it makes it a simple choice as well since there's nothing to install and works great on every platform I've needed access to my projects (Windows, Mac OSX, ChromeOS, Linux).

In general I love the idea of a cloud based IDE & CodeEnvy is certainly one of the best that I have found. I especially love the ease of setup, integration with git, & ease of creating docker images / 1 click deployments to various PaaS. I can really see how the leveraging CodeEnvy gets me back to development & away from all the infrastructure tasks as it just automates away setup & provisioning.

All of the above being said, I disliked the IDE. Things like setting debugging breakpoints, searching through a project, & automated syntax checking in Python were just not there. I found it great for some quick changes, but if  wanted to work on a larger project I'd want those features.

Interestingly, I find myself compelled to code on my PC & then leverage CodeEnvy for all the deployment / packaging related events

Almost Amazing

I was initially skeptical.  How good could it be?  So I setup a free account, imported my private git repo from bitbucket, a Java/Maven project and it just built... first time I tried it.  Impressive.

I thought my database requirements for testing would surely fail, so i looked into setting it up and I was pleasantly surprised to find that codenvy uses docker, and even has pre-configured scripts for databases including postgresql.

It even had a VIM keyboard setup for the editor. 

It's not perfect - I had trouble navigating the GIT menus within the tool.  Pulling/pushing were fine, but reverting uncommitted changes isn't intuitive (in fact, i haven't tried the solution suggested in the forums yet).

Pricing for small accounts it's clear.  Free gives you limited (but fair) VM resources, while the next step up (premium) apparently provides better resources and access but details are hidden behind the dreaded "contact sales" form.

Overall, it's impressive. 

Impressively smooth transition from desktop to a cloud IDE (java/maven project in git)

I started using codenvy while I was looking for a Online IDE solution that would work across my devices as I'm not always using the same device in my work. My internet speeds are not always the greatest either. So that was also a big factor in which ones I choose (Cloud9, Koding, Codenvy, and a few others). All in all I decided to use Cloud9 for my work but Codenvy came pretty close. I personally like;

 * Caching the ide client-- improved loading speed & slow connection issues
 * Speed in creation of workspaces
 * Fast client
 * 4GB workstation RAM is free

However a few things also stopped me from using it, these mainly were;

 * Hard to use interface (learning curve)
 * No colour customization for the idea appearance
 * Strict knowledge of docker (easy for me, but not easy for anyone else I work with)

All-in-all I think it has a ton of potential and I would recommend looking into codenvy before you decide on other Online IDE solutions!

An online IDE with potential-- but not quite there.

First of all, I love the support with Codenvy. It really seems like it's always updating, coming up with something new. It supports all kinds of programming languages so that it's possible to program from anywhere, anytime you need it. It's really hard to believe that this is a web application. It seems as though this could be a full blown desktop IDE. But that's the thing, it's all cloud based!

I absolutely love the support for Java and Docker. It makes mostly anything that can be run on Linux machines be able to run on browsers. Truly amazing stuff.

The design of Codenvy looks gorgeous and is really easy to navigate around. All your workspaces and projects are all at the tip of your fingertips (and the cloud, I guess).

I honestly think that programming in general should be leaning more towards being cloud based. Every day, we are getting closer and closer to having a full-blown desktop experience in our browsers and on the cloud. This also means I can finally have a good IDE on Chrome OS since it's purely a browser based system.

I was very surprised to experience a browser based developer environment with Codenvy. This was perfectly the same idea that I had in my mind several months ago : a browser based developer environment. I was really wondering how my idea has already got into work. I found about this IDE when I was looking for some means to deploy a server in Cloud Foundry. I found it more interesting as it is a cloud based IDE that support rest services. The runner allows the web app to run directly from Codenvy. I am researcher on Docker and Kubernetes stuff. I love the feature of Codenvy to use Tomact servers, Apache servers using Dockerfiles. I used Cloud Foundry runner with Codenvy and it is very interesting. Using Codenvy is very with its plugin for Eclipse. But I love to work in Codenvy workspace. It gives me all the comfort that I expect from an IDE environment. Moreover, the dashboard is well organized, uncluttered and very elegant looking. I like the way how project starts giving details on preparing workspaces, setting up configurations and runners and so on. 
Coding is easy with Codenvy. It has more comfort than a normal Eclipse or IntelliJ IDEA provides. Create new project window is well organized to select different options for projects. It also provides sample HELLO WORLD projects for various project options so that even a novice developer can start coding with Codenvy. The Dockerfile shown in the configs tab enables us to learn Docker as well. I love all these features. I suppose that Codenvy supports any browser and it can be used with different cloud environments. I used Codenvy to create Maven projects, servlets using Google App Engine Java, Go projects and many more. I feel very comfortable with Codenvy. Codenvy debug features are very useful, even to debug other's code. And its integration with git is very interesting. I can easily pull and push my code. I gain a perfect user experience from the well organized user interfaces, auto complete coding features, error suggestions features and so on. No wonder I can run my code from any machine from the place where I stopped coding. I feel that my code is portable. Codenvy, you are really wonderfu! I hope that it will enhance more features in the future for cloud developers. I prefer if it can use some more shortcut features like 'find and replace' etc. I love using Codenvy as it is a SaaS that provides perfect user experience and it meets all the developer expectations.

The customer service is very quick and responsive, and it supports large groups. It has a plethora of advanced features for sharing, organizing files and it supports a lot of languages.

I can see great advantage of programming in the cloud, because I can now program on my chrome book. It is like the Google docs for Eclipse.

I have been using Codenvy for while, and its actually amazing. Its fast, slimy, easy and has a great GUI.

If the Internet suddenly shuts off (as it has tendencies to do), my project will be halted: I'll lose my flow and, quite often, I'll stop programming.

The ease of use of the editor is important to me as well. Things like automatically adding closing brackets, tabbing when appropriate when I add a new line, etc.

One of the things I noticed using this IDE is sometimes is lagging quite long. I'm not expecting to be 60fps, but maybe some scripts  are having some problems.

The fact that I can run an Open Source version as well as pay to run the full version in my own environment is a nice feature. Pricing out of the way, lets get down to the fun stuff.

I love how simple docker has made the image/containerization workflow. A great help to all software engineers working on microservices.

Sometimes, when an error occurs in the container, it is difficult to investigate and discover, as there is a certain usage restriction.

Once you get it running and understand how its ecosystem works, you feel like a god. Understanding it's purpose and how useful it can be it can really save a lot of time on the long run.

It is difficult to debug things that are not working correctly as a docker image since you need to know your way around docker.
