Pros

I feel like a professional developer using it, my code is always backed up and up to date on a beautiful web user interface. I love how the badges look and how it feels colorful.
It is a great collaborative tool that allow us to manage the projects and ensure the progress is on schedule. The reporting function is very helpful for the communications within the organization.
It's an awesome tools, perfect both small projects on a budget or for large applications that need paid features and great support.

Pros

With its intuitive interface, powerful automation capabilities, and top-notch security features, the platform is an excellent choice for organizations seeking to optimize their Kubernetes workloads.
It is easy in use also I like the Multi-Cloud support which helps user like me who switches between multiple cloud choices.
Kubernetes Platform have great capabilities in terms of application development and application management and cost savings.

Cons

Sometimes , build fails after delay of 20-30 minutes and then i get to see the error. This is obvious that it needs to reach that stage first before displaying the error.
Some features are missing and that's what's missing compared to the direct competitor.
It lacks some features, and sometimes the menus are really confusing and hard to navigate. There have been some occasional crashes too when you need to restart your server to get it up again.

Cons

Terminal commands are confusing for beginners.
Difficult to resolve errors. Setup is quite difficult for new users.
It is a bit costly, but I expect the new features will adjust the cost soon.

Easy to manage quality source codes with GitLab

Reviewed 5 years ago

We can efficiently and effectively manage our projects with our co-workers and we can track our developments.

Pros

GitLab platform is a single platform which we can manage our entire software development life-cycle. We can efficiently manage our source code with the GitLab and we can plan our project and build a solution from scratch with GitLab .Also GitLab is the easiest way to deploy cloud based native applications. When considering emerging technologies such as Kubernetes, we can save the time with GitLab because most of the configurations are completed automatically.

Cons

User interfaces are not very attractive to interact with.It would be great if can have improvements on UI/UX areas of the platform.

Great tool to track issues and to manage IT projects

A part the issue tracking feature, which is a very long time component, the CI/CD help us to build a robust CI and CD process.

Pros

Issues tracking is simple and complete, but the really powerful part of the software it's the CI/CD. Pipelines and integration with Kubernetes (and lots of others tools) are a long time and mature features.

Cons

Actually I don't find out missing features.

The best opensource tool for software engineering management

Reviewed 3 years ago

We're hosting all of our private code repositories on gitlab.com, using the issue tracker, merge requests. We also run our continuos builds and deploy directly to our Google Cloud Kubernetes Engine workloads.

Pros

It's opensource though provides a cloud based solution with a really good free tier. It allows integrating code repositories with issue tracking and continuos integration and continuos deployment

Cons

User experience could be largely improved. Searching and filters are a bit clunky from the UX point of view. Also bulk actions are only allowed at project level.

I am a new user of gitlab on a bigger project in the company and so far I am satisfied.

Pros

It just works. Greatly integrated with containers and Kubernetes. I also like possibility to add descriptions and pages in the projects and jobs, which is nicely done, better than in Jenkins for a comparisation.

Cons

Sometimes a little more features could be added, a little more options and configurations for specific jobs.

GitLab is the best self-hosted git platfotm

Reviewed 5 years ago

I use GitLab daily for work and I don't know how I could do without. Once it is properly set up, it leverages all the pain of developing an application from coders. You just have to code, everything else is taken care of for you, from keeping track of issues to deploying, its almost magical.

Pros

- It has tons of features that go beyond Git, such as CI/CD, Kubernetes integration, Environments and metrics, build artifacts, docker registry - It manages the entire application life cycle, from creating a repository to deploying your code to production and monitoring too!

Cons

- It can be hard to configure, requires a good knowledge of the platflorm - The UI can be improved on, even if in most cases it is more than enough

GitLab

Powerful tool - if you know how to use it!

Reviewed 5 years ago

GitLab is the code versioning system that our company uses on a daily basis. We found useful to have a fine-grained authorization management for your users/developers, that made it easier for us to ensure the only the right people can see the right things. We also use the "organisation" feature to have all our developers in the same place with the right access.

Pros

The products has plenty of features, as well as supporting all the basic Git operations/merge requests, you are given a wide choice of CI pipelines you can set up from within the project. Need more? Integrations with metrics, error tracking, kubernetes, snippets and more. I never had any problem so far, it's stable and always up.

Cons

The major issue for me is that these features are advanced, and if you want to use the repository as just that, you find yourself overwhelmed with loads of choices that you don't really need. Therefore, sometimes I find it hard to look for a button which should be the most visible element on the screen. Additionally, I found the arrangement of information in the "merge request" screen a bit counterintuitive compared with similar services.

One stop shop for planning, development, and operations

Reviewed 5 years ago

Making it easier to build quality into the software development lifecycle without sacrificing speed. Let the computers do the heavy lifting of building and testing the changes. Bake in DevOps best practices by default.

Pros

Integration of CI/CD and Kubernetes for easily developing and running custom apps. Fantastic collaboration features like discussions, visual diffing. Some of this stuff you don't even get on desktop apps that charge big bucks. Frequent updates that inch its capability and usability forward. Good documentation. Wonderful community, welcoming atmosphere, pleasant to work with all the employees I've encountered.

Cons

Sometimes things break. When things are broken, sometimes it can take some time to be fixed, if you're not willing or able to fix it yourself. One of the consequences of such broad scope and feature development velocity. It would be advisable to keep another copy installed separately for testing updates before applying them to the live edition, if your IT has the capacity to do so.

Probably the most complete feature set for CI/CD

Pros

Other than the populat Git repository, GitLab excels in CI/CD allowing for a completely customized pipeline. I am currently using it to deploy a new docker image on kubernetes every time code is merged from a development branch to a master branch. The pipeline also runs a sonarqube scan and other tests automatically.

Cons

Having many branches make it hard not to get lost since you can easily foget to select your preferred branch in the dropdown boxes before merging.

Intuitive, simple and effective way to setup CI/CD through "pipeline as code" paradigm.

Reviewed 6 years ago

A free way to be effective and to go straight to your goal. Lot of work is saved by this tool with respect to other similar solutions. This software is stable, you can install it wherever and it will work. You can upgrade it whenever with no surprise. Very nice tool. Forrester recommendations are all deserved.

Pros

Very simple and effective. Setting up a pipeline is immediate. It is pretty documented and also newbie can approach a good result in short time. Issue and agile management of a project is a big plus and recent capabilities to monitor project performances are impressive. It is powered by docker containers and kubernetes and this make isolation and a sort of orchestration possible and easy. People can focus on their own objective rather than spending time understanding the tool.

Cons

It is based on a project centric approach, but here the project is a single piece of code. Orchestration and release automation for complex scenarios must be delegated to other professional software. Standardisation of projects is not obvious since a pipeline refer to a single project. Environments refer to a single instance of an application. They are great but they do not easily correspond to what an environment usually means: an aggregation of nodes and software instances connected to each other.

GitLab Review

Pros

GitLab is fairly easy to set up and use. It is so easy that virtually anyone who can operator a computer can easy set it up in no time. I like how is integrates nicely with Continuous Development. It is something I use a lot for most of my projects. I like how one can easily hide repositories from public view. It's constantly being updated on a regular basis. GitLab also offers integration with Kubernetes for easy deployment.

Cons

I think the interface is not the best and really needs some touch. Also, it doesn't have as large a community behind it as GitHub has.

The Entire DevOps Lifecycle

Reviewed 5 years ago
Pros

GitLab isn't just for hosting your code, it's for the entire lifecycle of your code. Since they host code, it makes sense for them to provide services around development and getting code into production. Their integration into other services is really easy. They give you GitLab-CI for any CI/CD needs, driven from a yaml file. You also get integrations into Prometheus and Kubernetes, which make deployment and monitoring a breeze.

Cons

GitLab could do with a bit more polish. Due to the many features, it's often difficult to find a setting that you need. Often you need to search around a little to find it. Some of the documentation isn't very good either.

It's good but, definitely not the best

Reviewed 4 years ago

It works fine, and it's a good alternative for the usual Bitbucket, Jira and Bamboo (or Jenkins) combo that's commonly found on the corporate world. I'd recommend to consider Github Teams or Github Enterprise.

Pros

- Unlike Github, it can be installed locally, it also makes it highly customizable - It has CI/CD functionality integrated - It has code search and indexing - It's integrated with a docker registry and multiple code repositories

Cons

- It's highly monolithic, if some feature fails, most of the times everything fails - It's not easy to clusterize the service - It's not easy to update, nor to migrate to a new server - It costs the same to use the self-hosted than the cloud-hosted version - Gitlab CI/CD shared (both free and paid minutes) run on a GCE Kubernetes cluster without any fixed IP address so it's hard to access your servers unless you open ports publicly or create a VPN tunnel

Best Value Suite of Software Development Tools

Reviewed 5 years ago
Pros

Gitlab has an extremely robust free tier with tools that go far beyond simple source/version control. We use the Gitlab CI/CD pipeline runner extensively, allowing us to not only use Gitlab for source, but also for our deployment/build pipeline. Gitlab also has the ability to manage Kubernetes clusters from the suite, which is super helpful. We also extensively use the issue board for tracking scrum issues, which includes time estimates. Gitlab used to be most popular for offering free private repos, and it still does, but these other free features make it an absolute home run. We use Gitlab for every project because of how great it's been.

Cons

The pipeline runner can occasionally be a bit buggy sometimes, but nothing critical. For example, if you prematurely stop one pipeline and immediately start another, it can take 10 minutes for the new pipeline to start for some reason. Also, the time tracking on the issue board does not automatically put the sum at the top of the column, which I find annoying - we built a small gitlab api integration to pull that info for us. They have been updating this feature recently, though, so it may be solved soon.

Best code versioning and CICD

Reviewed 6 years ago
Pros

It does EVERYTHING. Issues management. Code management. CICD. Docker registry. Deployments. It’s all built in. I’ve been using it for a while after switching a few things over from GitHub. It took some getting used to but it has so many more features and is so much more customizable. I have a software stack that myself and two others work on. We have set up CICD and now when a merge is finished, tests kick off, if they pass, the app is deployed to staging in kubernetes and end to end tests run, and if they pass, everything is pushed into production. It’s great!

Cons

After using github for so many years, it was hard to get used to some small aspects. Different terminology for the same functions and such. But that is a minor annoyance.

GitLab has a large and active community of contributors who help maintain and improve the platform

Pros

GitLabprovides a complete end-to-end solution for software development, from source code management and version control to deployment and monitoring. This can be very convenient for teams who want to consolidate their development workflow in a single platform.

Cons

One potential limitation is the complexity of the platform. While GitLab's comprehensive feature set can be a strength, it can also make the platform more challenging to use and configure, especially for smaller teams or organizations.
