As an experienced programmer I had some trouble to make my life easier. Trained to use code I can create anything. But as I got used to OutSystems, I cannot think of an easier way to create solutions for business problems. It reduced the time spent on a lot of things, leaving time in projects for the new next thing to implement:) Beside that, the model driven development ensures code quality and control. Combined with the excellent usage of LifeTime, going from development, testing, acceptance and production is a breeze. And when it does give some problems, a roll back is just as easy.
- Speed - Quality - Flexibility - Business Processing Tools
- Rethink software development - Loosing control of the underlying technical things - SQL is managed by the system, so tuning and in depth control is harder

Having used Outsystems to improve time-to-market on a small order portal/ecommerce project we realized some savings in terms of effort but I feel Outsystems has more to give. This is a limitation of our skillset and knowledge, not the Outsystems platform. Where could Outsystems improve? Documentation. Yes, there's lots of tutorials, courses and videos, but sometimes you just want to google the...

Great so far.
Easy of use, visual representation of business process, accessability to citizen developers, integrated source control and analytics.
Adoption by exisiting developers and hard to find exisiting talent to hire direct.

The deployment process of each application is very robust among several environments that can be defined as needed.
The ability to set event handlers on events triggered by editable grids so it can have more control in execution of client-side scripts.

When I found this, it felt like the software I'd always been looking for - allowing me to focus on designing data and adding custom functionality, rather than the usual process of lots of work typing code that is simply doing routine tasks, especially when working with AJAX functionality. The graphical interface works really well in most cases; the majority of what we want to do can be done with the drag and drop logic, and either automatic or custom SQL as needed. There are times when you feel you're going round the houses to achieve a particular custom effect, but those times are fairly rare, and as the product evolves, they become more rare.
Very fast way to get prototype and proof of concept systems up and running Most custom features are pretty easy to add You can shell out to C# when needed Very easy roll-out of applications from dev to test to live
The underlying SQL database can get pretty complicated if you keep changing data structure - sometimes we define the database ourselves to get better control over it

Most development environments I've used either give a very high level of control with slow development, or rapid development with hardly any control if you want your application to work in a specific way. OutSystems, for me, strikes an excellent middle ground. It's allowed the rapid development of a number of useful applications in a fraction of the time that standard coding would take, but we've...

Great tool for developers, easy to modify existing applications, great lifecycle management, although deploying can take some time
Extensibility of platform, ease of creating a demo and extending / modifying this to a enterprise ready product
Pricing, although price quality is good, it's an expensive product

We are still in the process. Will take a while. Transitioning from our legacy platforms to full low code.
I can say enough about how helpful the Success team has been helping my development teams make the transition from traditional .net development to Low code.
It is too easy to get started. Need to make sure you shift your mindset from "I have to write code" to what is the best way to leverage OutSystems.

Very prescriptive. You will find it hard to do extensive customization. Sometimes support can take time to fix platform bugs.

We are still developing our apps; however, we see the benefits of Outsystems while we are developing
Outsystems allows our developers to develop apps that would take months to developer otherwise. It has so many features that are already pre-built, it is easy to use and fun for developers.
Outsystems is more difficult to learn than I thought it would be. I took the classes on line and followed the instructions. However, I was unable to do them on my own afterwards.

ease of use. It's so easy to build mobile apps for with this software. Development doesn't take long and you can make adaptations on the fly. Customers can use their product fast and are happy.
You can't insert any code into it. Sometimes you know the solution in code, but you can't input it anywhere

I like that it's written with React. I like that the mobile app generated (for iOS at least) does a good job at capturing the iOS look and feel. I also like that there are alot of customization options for custom blocks and the fact that you can trigger custom events from those blocks.
The id of the control is still not accessible in CSS and we have to resort to jQuery or use classes. The development process is mostly drag and drop and coming from a background of coding every little thing in the systems I've created, it seems at times, that I'm making a macro.

OutSystems truly does live up to the promise of 10x development. The cost of the platform is offset completely by freeing up developers to provide vastly more value for every minute spent working on projects. Perhaps not obviously, it also improves the quality of products significantly. Developers get time back to actually work with customers in the target markets and operate on feedback. Divisions and companies can become more agile and keep up with an ever changing world.
There are some limitations with collaboration amongst teams. Because the platform uses a modeling language which exists in three dimensions, typical version control features like branching, merging, and pull requests do not currently exist. This issue can be overcome by changing the way you organize your teams and how they do work.

If you're a web developer then you'll enjoy Outystems. Create a web site in fraction of the time it would take to create a site coding it by hand. You web application and native mobile app can have a shared integrated data. How cool is that?!?!

Decided not to use it long-term as the ongoing costs were too high.
Business processes are easy to map and associate with business rules and the user interface. A very intuitive interface. Visual Studio integration is great, and application development is a much more manageable process. Built-in version control, repository contains all logic and business rules. Change management is less painful thanks to the abstraction of business rules within the system.
The cost was much higher than we could afford. This platform is ideal for larger development shops that need the efficiency of a well-managed platform.

We are totaly involve, and we are migrating a lot of the organizations solutions into the plataform, our POS solution, delivery hand held solution, our transportation manager application (Oracle TM), and we also create a custom CRM levaing behind the SAP CRM solution.
The plataform enables us as a company to colaborate and implement agile solutions, innovations all across the organization, IT is not longer the bottleneck to promote that innovation, we are now a strong arm that the company relay on to create new technology, solve company issues and bring agile solutions to our customers (internal and external)
We are using de Paas solution and that by definition "retrict" the core in depht administration of the infrastructre, but we are working with Outsystems in order to have more control or visibility of the complete infraestructure, we need that 'cause we have core company solution on the plataform and need to monitor in depth the transactionability and guarantee as much as we can the availabilty

I have been using OutSystems platform do develop the online properties for the NGO I lead. We developed a payment system from scratch, a system to manage applications and different schools for migrants and a dynamic and cool front end. The speed we need to make changes on our web applications and the number of features we need to deliver, given the size of our team (1 developer!) and financial limitations, is only possible with the OutSystems Platform.
Fast development, easy to change / maintain apps. Easy to learn (in 2 weeks you'll start rocking OutSystems development with no problem. If you know DB systems, and a high level programming language is enough to learn OutSystems fats and easy.
You will need to adapt a little bit to the IDE and it will take you 2 weeks to start being productive. It depends on you (of course). Also, you can start doing things from day 1 though.
Thank you for your review Hugo. For OutSystems it is a pleasure to see NGOs like yours take advantage of our technology to bring your ideas to the community.

It is the best option out there if you are looking to skyrocket your development agility. I am confident that the average website / web application could be rebuild in a few days.
The ease of use I amazing. With normal coding I would take a day to set everything up ( maybe more depending on the project ). With outsystems there is no need for setup. Just start a project and publish. That's it, The (web) application is already running! Also, no overly complicated data or OO design needed anymore. Outsystems mostly takes care of that.
There are still some really small points that need to be taken into account when developing with outsystems. to work faster, functionality wise there are still some things to be added. Also if you're looking to develop with outsystems if you're a small company, its very pricy in that scenario. Personally i would like to see a viable option for personal use / small businesses.

The software is a low code platform that allows us to create apps that we use for our everyday business needs. Our development team is able to streamline our processes and create a professional looking apps that looks great on cell phones, tablets and desktop. Our customers love the look and feel of our apps, and enjoy using them.
I did not like to have to learn how to use the program, but it was easy, and there are plenty of tutorials. Other than having to take the time to learn something new, I have not run into any issues that are concerning.

Outsystems has allowed our team to very quickly develop and release a production application in a matter of months with the inclusion of business units testing each feature along the way. It allows us to really adapt to an iterative development approach.
Outsystems uses the latest UI designs so we can focus on building out the business process. We are able to deploy in on environment and then quickly send it over to a test environment for our customers to be engaged in the SDLC. Code changes and security enable quality deployment into our production environment and minimizes any breaks in our application.
You can sometimes reach a roadblock and the customer support might take a bit longer to answer your questions if you did not purchase the higher SLA support package. Certain bugs can occur when using the Service Studio but patches usually fixes it in a timely manner.

I love it. .. I was sceptical at first but it has proven me wrong. It is a way to talk about business value instead of code and deploy this fast to your customers
Visual modelling of data / Integrity checks (nothing is deployed when it breaks something else) / SilkUI (standard UI components so yuo doný have to make them all) / Ease of deployment between environments / Ease of integration with the rest of the world (REST, SOAP, database connections, extension with C#)
When using the correct architecture (4-layer) and you have a lot of espaces/modules ... you have to refresh a lot modules (rebuild manually) ... this can take some time ... So when you want to test your code you sometimes first have to wait for a rebuild

There's so much available to use and so much acceleration available we heavily rely on this platform every day in our organization. Users who are note developers are very pleased with the speed at which we can deliver, the look and feel and how easy it is to give feedback to us as well.
In short, what I titled above. There is so much available to take advantage of from connectors, prebuilt integrations, screen design accelerators and even user feedback options. There's almost nothing I want that isn't already a part of Outsystems, and if there is I can use custom code integrations as well! I don't know if our team will ever have enough time or project to explore all Outsystems has to offer.
Some of the training was lacking for some advanced components at first (api creation, etc). That has improved with more training options, but also building more accelerators into the tool. (i.e. enter the url end point and it can automatically create functions and variables for you)
