Exceptional!!! Bottom line this software is excellent​! And the customer service is by far first rate.

SmarterSelect is very easy to use and the customer support is exceptional. Our organization has been using SmarterSelect for several years and the software continues to get better. I like that they continue to improve the software. I also like they make it a point to train their customers on their new features and upgrades.

Cons

There is not much that I do not like about the software. There are some back-end reporting things that I find cumbersome such as when a parent/guardian creates an application for their son or daughter that person's name appears on the reports first not the actual applicant's​ name. This poses a challenge when you are looking up applications by the applicant's name. Another issue with this is the...

Great product for the price

Pros

It's incredibly user friendly and easy for applicants to use. Our evaluators are also happy with product's ability to be so user friendly. Their customer service is phenomenal, fast, friendly and useful.

Cons

I would love to be notified, per program, of evaluators completing their evaluations. The logic of some questions could also use some improvements. I also wish there was a way to copy a question so I didn't have to repeat the work multiple times.

Pros

Easy for even not tech-savvy people to pick up, but with a respectable amount of customization. The look is modern for both the front- and back-end and I appreciate how much thought went into making features on both ends appear and feel as such. Customer support is responsive and have gone through great lengths to identify issues and stress-test solutions, which is again greatly appreciated.

Cons

This has only happened once to my knowledge but when some back-end autoscore stuff broke, the process to identify the problem and fix it took longer than we had hoped, and it really dragged down our evaluator experience. So I would say perhaps the stress-testing is not rigorous enough.

There is nothing better at this price, and this software is better than packages at higher prices

We were building a grant program from scratch and needed the applications to be simple enough that anyone could fill them out, while still covering all the information we needed to be compliant with the US Treasury dept. SmarterSelect allowed us to set up the programs we needed quickly and easily.

Pros

Phenomenal Customer Service! Easily customizable without overcomplicating the process. Enough bells and whistles to be robust but not so many that it loses the thread of what you are trying to do. We were able to build a grant program from scratch and go from developing the forms to opening applications in 3 months. At a price that made sense for a county government. Other packages quote you a yearly price and then tack on $$$ to set up your account. SmarterSelect has complete transparency.

Cons

Honestly, there were a couple of things but they have added updates just recently that took care of those issues.

Excellent value for grant and scholarship application program

SO GLAD that we don't have to paper applications and send copies to reviewers. This has streamlined our process immensely.

Pros

Relatively easy to create an application. Great online support. Very good value.

Cons

My applicants seem to have a problem when I give them a link to a new app. It's as if Smarter Select has put a cookie on their computer and my new link takes them to an old app. The Prequalifying questions have to be answered with all "Yes" responses. Sometimes that means that the question I must create is convoluted and confusing.

Affordable

Overall, it has been a good experience and the price has been reasonable for our small office. Even with the price increase it is understandable. I just want to make sure we are using what is available to us as changes to the software are made and our grandfathered price increases.

Pros

It is very affordable and does what we need it to. I like to be able to have a common application for scholarships and to customize the specific scholarships. The online evaluation makes it easy and online recommendations, too.

Cons

Applicants get confused about having to click the APPLY button to "CREATE" a final grant report. It is confusing to them. They think they are applying for another grant which isn't the case. Also, the very tiny save button at the bottom of the grant applications and final reports gets missed and the information is not saved which is frustrating for the grantees because they have to start over.

Pros

The ease in use and understanding the software. The cost was very affordable. There is good value for the cost.

Cons

The support is only available via email. You cannot always explain the nuances or a complicated problem via email, but you try. And then the answers come back not always on point. There is sometimes a loss in translation. To be able to talk to someone would be helpful sometimes.

Pros

I love the ease of being able to work with applicants and evaluators in an easy way. Communication, documentation, and management is easy through SmarterSelect's software

Cons

We have to use a separate program to work with matching our applicants to scholarships. It is also hard to know what evaluators and applicants are seeing through their view as an administrator.

Two years and going strong!

It was rather simple process. At times though do to the change over in my office my partners have trouble watching the videos and learning how to utilize the program.

Pros

We really like that we can open and close the scholarship process just by setting up the dates ahead of time. We like that with our common application students can fill out one application but be eligible for multiple scholarships. It is easy to set up an additional requirement if scholarship committees choose to do so.

Cons

I don't like the tiers you need to buy just to add the Spanish language. When everything in our education system is setup to support Spanish speakers it seems lame a program that cost so much cannot support Spanish speakers unless we upgrade. Our reviewers have said it would be nice if the scholarships were separated into two files completed and incomplete rather than having to go through and separate them one at a time. I think there may be a setting to send completed ones to the reviewers but they like getting them all but would prefer the program separate them rather than lump them all together.

Scholarship Application Program Review

Our Rotary club has benefited from this program. We will be able to grow our program with this tool. (Please note that your demographic questions at the outset of this survey do not include appropriate responses for a service club, e.g., there are no employees, but rather members, and you do not include "service club" or a similar response as a business type option.)

Pros

The software allowed us to move from a paper-based system to online applications for our scholarships. High school students and counselors have a much easier time getting the applications completed.

Cons

The inability to summarize ratings for a student dynamically and make the results accessible to the interviewer/rater teams is highly frustrating to our club members who volunteer time to select students for scholarship. Essentially, they skip that portion of the work and make decisions based on their reaction to the student and the application. It is far too expensive for a small service club to move to the higher levels of licensing.

It's easy to make custom applications and export the data from those applications, which saves time doing boring data entry work. The custom options help me offer tools to our review committees, which makes their partnerships with us more meaningful. It also has turned our application process nearly paperless, which saves us printing and paper costs, and makes looking up historical information easy.

Smarter Select is an easy-to-use platform that meets many needs for our organization. We can easily and quickly create custom applications for our variety of grant and scholarship programs. Cons

Honestly, I have very few negative comments concerning Smarter Select. There are a few quirks to the system that you have to get used to, but once you do, it's very reliable and easy to use. Honestly, I'm hard pressed to come up with an actual con. If I can offer an improvement, it would be that once users log in, they could see any applications they have yet to complete, instead of just past applications. I would also like a way to better sort disabled past applications -- we have a lot of different apps and it gets a little crowded looking through our history. Other than that, it really is a great product.

You can't go wrong with SmarterSelect

Pros

I have done a lot of research into software that could improve the work we do at our Foundation, specifically our management of a 65+ scholarship fund portfolio that kicks off nearly $500k each year. SmarterSelect allowed us to take our manual paper process to an incredibly efficient, streamlined, paperless approach. Since implementation we have increased our application submissions by over 400%

Cons

The ONLY reason I might consider another software is for the integration aspect. Our Foundant and Blackbaud have similar products but the edge they bring is the ability to integrate with our accounting software. That said, I am still not convinced that the integration will improve our system because I truly have been so pleased with the product, and the price, that SmarterSelect has to offer.

Smarter Select Provides Value, Function, and Efficiency

It's been a very beneficial experience. We've seen an increase in our grant and scholarship applications after moving to an online system. The Smarter Select team is always quickly available to help if we have an issue or question. And simply having an online application system makes us appear to be an advanced organization that meets our community's technological needs.

Pros

Our staff loves how fast and easy it is to create custom applications with a host of unique and useful functions. Our review committees enjoy being able to have online access to applications -- it makes their job a whole lot easier! And our applicants enjoy the ease and efficiency of being able to apply online. All in all, Smarter Select positively enhances our grant and scholarship application process while positioning us as a leader in our community.

Cons

If I could offer any improvement, it would be to add some additional options that could help to brand the system so that applicants can visually recognize which organization the are applying for support to. Another foundation in our region just purchased and implemented Smarter Select and this created some confusion for the non-profits in our region. We do include our logo at the top of the program for our applications, but it would be nice if there were ways to add it other places or on the log-in screen.

Great Grants Management Program, But Not Necessarily for Beginners.

We are able to begin and end our grants management procedures within the same system. This has been a huge time and cost saver for our foundation. The board members and grants committee members have been more than pleased with the ease of reviewing and evaluating submitted applications.

Pros

The applications are easily customizable, with question options for every type of inquiry (i.e., statistics, essays, contact). The forms settings, auto calculate, and rules are very useful, but take a bit of technical proclivity to get a good hold on. However, SmarterSelect provides excellent customer service and also has a vast library of tutorial videos. The Evaluator options are also extremely useful, especially when one has a board of 20+ and needs to keep reviews and scores organized in one location. While the export features need a bit of an upgrade, this software has made streamlined our grants management procedures.

Cons

The major qualm I have with SmarterSelect is the export options. Neither export to a pleasing, reader-friendly format. Most of our board members review online, which is ideal, but for those that prefer a printed binder, the export design ends up costing me more time than it should.

Great Price to Quality

I've used this for 5 years and the experience has been excellent. Unlike other programs, the price is terrific for the quality of the program and ease of use. They have only expanded their features. While lacking a bit in the matching side, they have so much that can be implemented behind the scenes.

Pros

Easy to Use, Great price to quality for the program. Unlike others, they don't raise prices dramatically every year and have kept the prices down, which is great for smaller budgets. Also While keeping prices down they've added more and more features. All problems I've ever had have been user error and not with their program. With the mid-level package there's SO MUCH you can do behind the scene to evaluate and rank (although matching still remains elusive). Any service to the site they've given plenty of notice so we can let students know the site will be down. Site stability and speed has been great.

Cons

No number to call right when you're having a problem-you have to send an email. To be fair, this is responded to promptly, but still... Once you know how to use the program it's very easy but there's no manual. Videos/support site and the topics are ok and expanding. Webinars help but can sometimes lose focus.

Helps you work more effectively and efficiently

Pros

First, I have to say the service of SmarterSelect is wonderful. From day one they have responded quickly, solved our issue or educated us on how to do something. Second, we use SmarterSelect for much more than scholarships. We have used it for registrations, employee grant requests, grant completion reports, finding alumni (forms), student thank you letter follow-up and more. Finally, we are able to choose the level of program we need based on the price that works best for our size organization. In my eyes, SmarterSelect and the people behind will help you work more effectively and efficiently which we all need since we have less people who need to do more.

Cons

It is a bit difficult to figure out how the app rules and autoscores affect the outcome. However, this is also where SmarterSelect shines. I am certain all similar applications have this, but SmarterSelect's customer service taught and helped me through any and all issues I had. Once you have a completed project, you can easily set up another or copy that one and adjust it.

Get Bang for Your Buck

We were looking for a cost effective online software package that would be easy for our users (students applying), evaluators and administrators. This software provides what we were looking for. Once the product was introduced, we have been tweeking it to fit our needs and make it a better user experience for both those applying and those reviewing the applications. SmarterSelect has been very responsive to our needs and worked with us to find solutions to most of our requests for assistance.

Pros

Ease of use and fantastic customer support.

Cons

Some places not flexible enough to provide what we need; and the fact that you cannot get aggregate reporting.

Effective and affordable platform!

Over the past year, the team at IAAQLI was able to successfully build out the grant request platform with 6 different application forms for Round 1 of our inaugural grant awards which yielded more than 140 applications. With SmarterSelect, we were able to receive requests and embed evaluator scores; additionally, the platform allowed my small team to sort and review critical data quickly. The SmarterSelect platform was essential to our allocation of nearly $22 million during Round 1!

Pros

The system is highly customizable. The ability to imbed evaluator reviews was a plus. My team enjoyed the online instructional videos from SmarterSelect.

Cons

Please consider adding fillable tables as an application response option.

We have been using SmarterSelect for the past 4 years to administer our Foundation's scholarship program. Recently, we also started using it for our grants, demonstrating its flexibility.

Pros

This is an accessible, flexible, reasonably-priced system. Some other products may have more bells and whistles, but often cost far more. Additionally, this company has provided excellent customer support since the beginning, and has promptly addressed any questions or issues we've run into. The overall experience has been very positive for staff, applicants, and reviewers.

Cons

Sometimes the online interface can be a bit slow or unresponsive, and isn't always intuitive.

SmarterSelect has allowed us to easily move from paper applications to a robust on-line process. It's a great value!

Pros

There's a lot of flexibility with this software. The providers continue to offer updates that add useful functionality improvements. If you need help, there's a great on-line resource as well as really quick responses from the helpdesk. Our users - both applicants and evaluators - comment about the ease of using this product.

Cons

When I'm updating a lot of application forms, it can get a bit cumbersome navigating back and forth from various lists.

Great value for the money

We are a small company with a small budget and SmarterSelect is perfect for us. It works for our purposes within our budget. It might not be the Cadillac but we can't afford the Cadillac. It was hard not having phone customer support in the beginning but they are very prompt on email support except on weekends.

Pros

Relatively easy to use, prompt customer support, continue to improve the product.

Cons

No phone support in emergencies, we use SS for both grants and scholarships and find that it is too scholarship-centric. I would recommend it more if it had some improvements for grants.

Great for the value - cumbersome to learn.

SmarterSelect has been an effective tool for scholarship management and tracking. The online training forums move very quickly. I can usually find posts of similar issues when troubleshooting which is nice to resolve and move on.

Pros

I have no basis for comparison with other software. I feel SmarterSelect is a great value, especially for smaller organizations. It provides all of the functions needed.

Cons

I'm not sure that I've learned all of the many tools available in this software. I dislike the long pause in between changing from one option to another. I wish once you left a record, it didn't leave a separate tab open. Ideally, it would so convenient to be able to have multiple views at one time.

Love it!!

The customer service has been great and I was able to get my now program up and running quickly.

Pros

I love that with being an AGC chapter we were able to get this product for a great price. Making one scholarship into 2 makes it easier on the student and evaluators

Cons

When using a program from the library and trying to customize is difficult and I don’t like that I had to delete sections and start over. Didn’t like that I could not copy a question to pasted into another program.

Pros

Easy to use, love the option to create your own scholarship layout.

Cons

I wish it had more functions at the lower cost-point, hopefully my budget will increase in the future to purchase the upgraded software.
