What users say

The next best thing is that for lawyers on a shoestring budget it is affordable and secure because it can be run off the cloud. So I give it two thumbs up for price, accessibility and price.
Plus, the price can't be beat. For a sole-proprietor like me, the fact that the program is offered free of charge for a one-seat account, was a big selling point when I was opening up my law firm.

Confusing interface but cost effective

Reviewed 5 years ago

It works but it could be more user friendly.

Pros

I like that the program is free for solo practitioners

Cons

It’s confusing to use and also runs quite slowly.

Vendor response

Features/Functionality 3 stars. Hmm. How would you know? We have no record of you in any of our databases, no record of a demo, download, participation in any free training or registering the product. It is technically impossible to use the product anonymously. We have been in the marketplace for over a decade. This is what we do and we do it very well. We service large legal teams from DOJs,...

A fantastic product ***** 5 Stars

Reviewed 13 years ago

The product is simply amazing. I often forget that I'm using a web browser. The product has rich easy to use features and the support is top notch. The product acts and feels like a desktop application. HoudiniESQ seamlessly integrates with Microsoft Office an Quickbooks. It supports calendaring, email management, document management, contact management, document assembly, email and document merges and template creation. Trust accounting, billing and invoicing. I can't list all the features. It does what 30K legal practice managements systems at a fraction of the cost.

Pros

Everything!

Cons

The Outlook plugin supports email, contacts and the calendar but there is no way presently to create email templates in OUtlook. You must use the Houdini interface to create your email templates.

Perfect for solos

Reviewed 9 years ago

Houdini is a feature rich product that cannot be beat for the solo practitioner. It has all the bells and whistles you could want, with extensive customization possibilities. Moreover, the price is perfect: free. Although the learning curve might be steeper than you wish if you are not going to use all of its features, it will be well worth it for whatever features you wish. I am still learning new things after two months of use. Even if you are a Mac user, the software is easy to use and highly functional because it uses your web browser to run. It has a few issues, but they seem so far to be quite minor. Updates seem to come out quite regularly as well.

HoudiniESQ has an extensive feature set, but the documentation is poor

Reviewed 2 years ago

I have used HoudiniESQ for over seven years. The product absolutely works, contrary to what another reviewer said. The challenge is that HoudiniESQ is designed with the very large office in mind, for example, 5,000+ seats. It assumes that the user will have high-end tech support in-house. I guess I am able to use HoudiniESQ successfully largely because decades ago I coded my own law practice management software, and have at least minimal understanding of what must be "under the hood." For that reason, I would only recommend HoudiniESQ to a very large organization that can truly take advantage of the extensive, advanced features or a solo with a coding background.

Pros

HoudiniESQ is free to solo practitioners, so the price is fantastic. The price for even a few seats, however, is also less than other products I have investigated, so HoudiniESQ offers great value for the extensive feature set. Secondly, it always works. Third, when I have a problem, I often get immediate attention from support, and it never takes long for a response by someone who truly knows what he is talking about. Advanced features include: calendaring triggers with conditional branching, user-programmable multi-practice group set-ups, fast searching, contract management support, mass emailing, support for atypical billing arrangements, client portal support, and embedded links with many types of other software.

Cons

The areas needed for improvement are too broad to discuss here. The product lost some functionality that I was relying on when it moved from version 1.99x to 2.0x and later. I continue to be surprised by what I consider to be poor programing/feature choices made in the transition to a different coding platform. I feel I kinda limp along with version 2.0x after using 1.99x (even though at least 2 excellent...

Great value for time tracking program

Reviewed 6 years ago
Pros

Price; customer support; fairly easy to add new matters and add time to events. I like that is is fairly compatible with Quickbooks.

Cons

The stopwatch feature. You have to manually add time to an event and then unclick and click on "bill" to update the fees. You should have the option for the stopwatch time to automatically add to the open event and update the fees accordingly. The old version did this well.

Vendor response

Hi, Thank you for your review. You make an excellent point about the Stopwatch feature. We will correct the current behavior to function as it once did. Release 2.0.0.117 will have this feature corrected. This version will also include a Intake button on the desktop which opens a wizard to quickly add a Contact and Matter. Less clicking.

FANTASTIC client support. Agent is the best support person that I've had the pleasure of getting assistance from across all of the technical systems and software that I've used. He consistently goes above and beyond to make sure that whatever crazy customization that I want can happen.

Doan Law Firm - Bankruptcy Attorneys

Reviewed 13 years ago

I manage a high volume bankruptcy practice in California and HoudiniESQ is living up to Mr. Rivera's statement he once made to me, "If you can think of it, we can get HoudiniESQ to do it for you." So far, I continue to be impressed. I highly recommend this product for law office management. Actually, it could be used for virtually any industry. I used to walk into court with a dolly. Now I carry...

Pros

Easy to use, easy to configure, economical, scalable. Links Matters, Contacts, Notes, Emails, and Documents. Allows us to centrally manage our entire bankruptcy practice (17 offices and expanding) without the need for terminal services connections. The CEO, Frank Rivera, is extremely receptive toward ideas that enhance the product. Mr. Rivera's team is doing a great job of staying on the cutting edge of technology.

Cons

The release date. I wish this product was available BEFORE we dumped tens of thousands of dollars into Time Matters and the "leading bankruptcy customization feature package".

Great Software...Great Learning Curve

Reviewed 7 years ago

The Software is the best value on the market and is very intuitive and full featured. There is a steep learning curve, however after some time using the software you will find out how amazing this software can be: Whether Organizing your case Documents; Document automation, or Automated Tasks, this software is very robust. Additionally, the software does some things that other software do not do at all, such as the automatic billing for email function that is built into the Outlook add-in. I am very happy with this investment. One suggestion, though, they need to add a quick bill tab to every screen to capture billable time.

Pros

It is Robust and Full featured

Cons

Since upgrading to version 2.0 there is not a quick bill button to add billable time immediately. There is a workaround which requires using the timer, but that just adds two more steps for recording my billable time.

Purchased in 2016. Tried to set it up. It never synced properly with GSuite and Quickbooks

Reviewed 4 years ago
Pros

It never worked properly, so we after investing time and resources, we had to abandon it. The company refused to refund the cost even though their customer service support admitted that the program failed to work properly.

Cons

It never worked properly, so we after investing time and resources, we had to abandon it. It didn't sync properly with GSuite and Quickbooks. It's automated billing was a nightmare. It added a lot of time, but it was based on the email subject line. So if there were 10 email exchanges under the same subject line, there would be 10 duplicative billing entries.

Very comprehensive legal practice management software!

Reviewed 9 years ago

The best part about using Houdini is that there is no charge for a single user, solo practice setup. The program logic is straight forward, but the learning curve is a little steep. But since MOST attorneys have passed the Bar exam, this shouldn't be a problem! There is comprehensive documentation and many how-to videos, but a 1-2-3 setup guide including better descriptions of the various options would be extremely helpful. I prefer reading documentation rather than watching a video, just a personal preference. The Quickbooks connector is great and the Evernote integration is also a big plus. After reviewing all our other options, Houdini ESQ seemed like the best and least expensive place to start and grow.

Great Concept, But Needs Work

Reviewed 9 years ago

The concept of Houdini ESQ, and the fact that it is free for solo practitioners, really sets it apart from the rest of the field. With that said, the interface is pretty easy to navigate, however, the functions don't always respond. In particular, I found CalendarRules integration to almost never work. Also the cloud based program does not do enough to make me feel secure. Also it is difficult to convert to if you do not use one of the practice management programs it is compatible with. Overall it is a good product that has the capacity to overtake the market if it can stay affordable, increase security, and improve the ease of transitioning.

Perfect solution for a solo practitioner

Reviewed 9 years ago

When I opened my law firm, I was looking for a time matter management system, as cheap as possible - after all opening your firm is pretty scary and you are watching every penny, especially the one you don't have. When I stumbled upon Houdini, I was hopeful, because I have a former IT background and it showed potential. It ended up being everything I really need, and the fact that it's free to solo practitioners is incredibly appreciated. When I will grow enough to hire staff, I will be delighted to continue using it and have staff members help me with any entries I need.

Excellent Product

Reviewed 9 years ago

Before going with Houdini I tried several other products and have been a long time user of Time Matters. After trying Houdini I felt that it had all the features of the far more expensive products. Houdini has all the features I wanted and it is integrated with word, outlook and google, all of which were very important to me. The only downside of the product is the creation of invoices. I would like it to be a bit easier to customize. Overall a great product.

Second Best Option

Reviewed 9 years ago

In preparation for a disaffiliation with my prior firm, I auditioned several case management systems. This one was the second best - it only lost out to MyCase, which was purely due to design issues and perceived ease of use. If the product had been presented more attractively, I believe my team would've been more impressed with the Ease of Use. Much better pricing options and utilization of on site storage are huge pros to this product.
