Pros and cons

Pricing is great considering the amount of functionalities it provide. Provides nearly realtime delivery which is very important for critical time sensitive applications.
The best feature I most like about SNS is its on-time alert notification and if there is one message already there. Then the SNS queue will start and works on the First in first-out perspective.
I'm impressed with its reliability and ease of use.
The biggest con I have with SNS is that there is no way to store the sent messages, making it costly and hard to implement when something goes wrong and you need to resend all the previous messages.
At times there are cases were few notifications are lost when the s3 trigger event was set up to throw the notification when the file arrives.
It has hard limits on the number and size of messages per second. It is difficult to decide whether to use SNS and SQS or, for example, EventBridge.

Amazon Simple Notification Service (SNS)

Pros

the best feature I most like about SNS is its on-time alert notification and if there is one message already there. Then the SNS queue will start and works on the First in first-out perspective.Even we can integrate mail as well as SMS for notification

Cons

for the free tier, the account is free for one million requests but after that, the pricing is hiked like a rocket. They need to work on it because many of our clients stop using it because of price issues.

Another good AWS service for your solution using notifications

Reviewed 2 years ago

It is a very simple service as the name says but makes the solution more reliable which lets you send/track alerts and notifications, which can be integrated with other AWS services too making it more robust and useful.

Pros

This lets you programatically send messages/notifications to all your desired customers with the help of triggers as messages or emails which is easily scalable and can be managed without any worries too. In our usecase, we used it for push notifications to via emails mainly to the audience we intent to send. Configuration and setting up takes a couple of minutes.

Cons

Not too much customization provided because it is mainly managed by AWS. Service Documentation can be improved with more in-detail information, including integrations with other services just for reference.

Inexpensive messaging tool which can integrate easily with multiple AWS services

Reviewed 2 years ago
Pros

Pricing is great considering the amount of functionalities it provide. Provides nearly realtime delivery which is very important for critical time sensitive applications

Cons

Does not store messages hence it is always needed to back it up with other tools ( For example SQS). This increases the complexity of application and increases the cost

Software engineer's experience using Amazon SNS

Reviewed 2 years ago

I used SNS together with SQS to broadcast messages to several recipients.

Pros

Simple friendly API, very easy to use when you are already using the infrastructure from Amazon. Not expensive, pay as you go model. Based on pushing messages, not polling. Integrates great with Amazon SQS.

Cons

It has hard limits on the number and size of messages per second. It is difficult to decide whether to use SNS and SQS or, for example, EventBridge.

A really "simple" notification sstem

Reviewed 2 years ago

We use AWS SNS in many projects to sending push notifications, mail and SMS. We can setup a Multi Factor Authentication system integrated in a SSO flow really fast thanks to Lambda functions triggered on SNS events.

Pros

AWS SNS results really simple to integrate in our systems and on external services. API documentation is as usual for AWS serices really complete and easy to understand.

Cons

For SMS notifications AWS SNS can be more expensive compared to other services but it remains a cheap and cost effective tool.

Its great until its limitations block you

Reviewed 2 years ago
Pros

* AWS integration with other services like SQS or lambda, which help you a lot to speed up your development. * Out of the box http calls and email deliveries. I have used it extensively and the most valued feature for me is the fanout messages, i.e sending the same message to multiple consumers(sqs queues) so changes in the system can be propagated to the workload.

Cons

The biggest con I have with SNS is that there is no way to store the sent messages, making it costly and hard to implement when something goes wrong and you need to resend all the previous messages. Probably it's because its not the purpose of the tool but usually I have hit this issue when choosing SNS as an event source.
