Pros
Good for organising and tagging our brand assets and stock images and easy for staff to search and find files. You can associate files together which is a handy feature.

Cons
Find it quite expensive and we will probably investigate moving to another cheaper solution soon.

Canto delivers a lot of bang for the buck

Used weekly for less than 6 months
Reviewed 2021-03-03
Review Source: Capterra

As an over 200-year-old company with a history of catalogs and eCommerce, to say we've accumulated a lot of digital assets through the years would be an understatement. Like many others, our assets were scattered throughout different directories on network file shares, cloud environments like Sharepoint and Google Drive, as well as local computers. We wanted a central repository to consolidate everything going forward; assign a "librarian" to organize and curate the content; have permissions to ensure appropriate people are uploading content to appropriate locations; and then have an excellent way to organize the content by tags, keywords, custom properties, albums, etc. so that our team can easily find what they are looking for without wasting time looking in random file shares. Canto delivers all that and more.

Pros
Canto includes all the core features we were looking. It was the cheapest options we found that met all of our requirements, so it's a great value. (We looked at free and open source Virtual Machine options, as well as several significantly more expensive options.)

Cons
It's not bad, but I think the web application could be a bit faster when loading content.

Pros
There is nothing else on the market that compares from a price/value perspective. To find a product that provides as many features, you would be spending 4 times the cost of Canto

Cons
The application client interface hasn't changed in over 10 years, it needs to become more user-friendly with a redesigned interface.

My client was dealing with a lot of inefficiency and governance issues with digital asset management, and Canto has helped tremendously with things so far. Being able to collaborate across teams, but also restrict assets and control permissions has been super helpful for them.

Pros
It is customizable and all the controls are super useful. The permissions structure is great for managing governance and the client loves all the detailed options. The customizable metadata has been essential to their success. They also love the Adobe Connector and the portals and style guides. The UI is intuitive so onboarding has been smooth. It's a good value. They release new features regularly.

Cons
The tiered storage pricing by TB has been difficult for my client, but they have a strict budget so they're making it work, and Canto was the best value of all the DAM platforms we looked at.

Pros
I've found extremely useful to have a tool that improves information sharing across teams, including assets and their performance, which we rate with stars. Canto offers a remarkable customer support, and its affordable price and easy to use platform made it a great choice for our organisation.

Cons
Improved usage rights blocking/alerts. Some of our assets are subject to usage rights terms, and it is crucial for us to specify which ones are usable at a particular point in time. The current offering isn't ideal.

When handling projects for clients, managing files, versioning and collaboration can be a huge tasks. But Canto makes it very seamless. I like the fact that you can control file access and permissions. This tool helps us tell important brand stories

Pros
The tool makes digital asset management and organization seamless. You can easily create an asset structure and sort your files into albums and folders, and label them using keywords and smart tags. After sorting your files, you can share them to social media channels like Facebook and Twitter or File storage services like Dropbox, Google Docs and Box. To drive effective collaboration, you can create smart URLs and share them with key stakeholders.

Cons
Canto doesn't have pricing regime. Their pricing plans is tailored to suit your needs. I don't like the fact that I have to go through the pain of sending an email to their sales team to get pricing.

Our Marketing, Communications and Business Development teams love Canto, but really our IT team is so thankful we are no longer collaborating on shared drives with duplicate image and video files taking up precious digital space.

Pros
Canto has reimagined how my team collaborates by providing a centralized project hub. It also provides incredible customer service.

Cons
I wish the pricing structure was a little more clear. When we first signed with them, contracts were based on cost per feature, and when we renewed it had shifted to bulk pricing. It was a challenge to get on the same page, but the Canto staff was very helpful in working with us and we are happy with our renewal contract.

Pros
We needed a solution to get our ever-growing photo and video library under control. Canto offered the most robust yet easy to use system for organization of our digital assets. File/folder trees, albums, smart albums, keywords, tags, facial recognition, and most importantly duplication detection that actually works.

Dynamic DAM platform

Canto has been an important and daily tool for the professionalization of our workflows, and helped us develop meaningful care for our archival materials.

Pros
Canto is very flexible and adaptable platform that has really streamlined our workflows and made our materials accessible to our statewide staff across three different offices. It's also made it a much simpler process to search and find good visual assets for various needs, and to share out photo and video documentation with back to artists we work with easily.

Cons
The price is cost-prohibitive for smaller organizations, but the investment has been an important one for our organization in really taking good care of our cataloging and accessing our media assets. We do wish there was a function to batch-rename a group of files, tho.

Easy to use, easy to locate digital assets

Pros
Canto has made it possible for us to eliminate the need for staff designers to find images for people across campus. With a 100-seat plan, we have been able to identify key users in departments who can locate and download their own images. With most of us working remotely during the pandemic, we have access to what we need when we need it. Batch uploading of images makes it easy to upload and tag images in a time-efficient way. Images can be saved in various albums - which is also super helpful.

Cons
While competitively priced against similar products (and less than others we looked at) it's a fairly substantial financial investment.

A "DAM" good decision! So much better than Dropbox

Canto has really helped our business with the management and dissemination of digital assets. This had long been a pain point for us. I researched a lot of DAMs on the market but couldn't justify most of their pricing. Canto accomplishes what we need at a great value. While the UX can sometimes be a little challenging, I've seen continuous improvement since signing with them, which tells me they're listening and investing in their product.

Pros
The best part about Canto, for us, is the Portals feature. They're perfect for us to provide individual dealers with the authorized assets they need, while keeping our internal non-client ready assets separate. We also love the self registration feature which allows us to control who is able to gain access through an invitation code.

Cons
The UX is not always intuitive for new users. It's unique from other similar products, so there can be a learning curve for the less savvy. Our customers are less technologically inclined, and don't always understand how to do the basics. It takes some training to catch them up to speed, but afterwards, they're usually able to fend for themselves.

Low barrier to entry

Pros
Coming from having a ton of digital media but NO digital asset management system beyond disorganized hard drives, Canto provided most of the functions our team needed with low barrier to entry. The highly visual interface helps all of our staff members easily find what they are looking for, and the search functionality as proven pretty accurate and helpful. As we approached our storage limit, we were happy to learn of the cold storage option which let us archive some of our less-used material at a low cost.

Cons
My only complaint is that as we've used up more storage, it seems like Canto is running slower and slower. Not sure what the cause for that is, but I do have to be patient with it these days.

After reviewing the other products and Canto I found that Canto provided for more capabilities it is substantially reduced cost. Canto has helped us to improve our ability to deliver contents to a very large Group of individuals within the university. This product has helped us to broaden our ability to share a message in a very powerful way.

Top notch product with great UX and at a reasonable cost.

We did our fair share of research before deciding to go with Canto. We ultimately decided to go with Canto because of the ease of use (good UX) and because of the competitive price. We are considered a small business, and because of that, we could not justify the price tag associated with other DAM systems. Canto suited our needs perfectly. We needed a repository of our best photos, organized in such a way that allowed us to easily search what we were looking for. Onboarding was really simple.

Pros
The ease of use (UX) and reasonable price tag were easily the deciding factor for an organization our size (less than 50 people). Being able to add metadata, include geo-location of the photo, and managing duplicates/versioning are some of my favorite features of Canto. It also doesn't hurt that I can access the DAM assets using some of my favorite Adobe products.

Cons
Building out the folders can feel a bit clunky, but you quickly get use to it. Dragging a 'collection' from one folder to another folder isn't really as simple as I think it should be. Preview mode can seem a bit soft, but I suppose this doesn't bother me too much since the purpose of the DAM library is to help me select which photo I want to use for an ad or to build out a website, for example.
