Shelby offers a comprehensive church management software solution.

Pros

ShelbyNext Membership is a powerful church membership software application. I like the way that I can run reports on complex search criteria to extract the information that I want.

Cons

The weak spot for me is the user-friendliness of the reports. Even after training, I still get confused about how to generate exactly what I want in the reports.

Helpful tool for staff and congregation

It's a useful tool to keep track of members and or facility. We use it for member information, group management, mass emails and texts, and resource management.

Pros

Web-based software and apps are available to use anywhere with flexible permissions for different kinds of users.

Cons

Branding and color scheme cannot be made to match our church website. There is also no way to connect app to or church website.

Still lacking...

We used Shelby for years but never to its full extent. When we decided to get a little more training, nothing seems to work 100% of the time. Its always little things like Check-In won't work or a member can't be deleted but can be made inactive. Much of this was due to user error, but tech support isn't very much help. On top of all of this, the interface is from 1995 and has never ever been changed. Perhaps the move to the online version will be better.

Worth the Time to Upgrade

ShelbyNext Membership has been an asset to our church family: we get fewer calls in the church office asking for addresses and phone numbers; the information stays up-to-date as far as we know; pictures help church members put faces and names together; the attendance and email features allow leaders to call meetings and recognize people who are missing and may need a personal contact. Since we are able to make mass contacts and check-in children through ShelbyNext, we have eliminated the cost of additional software programs.

Pros

As a church staff member, I enjoy the fact that the Shelby Membership App puts information in church members' hands. We rarely receive phone calls asking for addresses and phone numbers which occurred frequently each day. Church members can track group attendance and set up meetings through the program as well. We enjoy the ability to make a church-wide or group-wide phone calls, texts, and emails.

Cons

The children's check-in system allows parents and guardians to add multiple records to the system, and it does not ask for mailing address information.

The most flexible ChMS anywhere

Do your homework. If you have the right staff and environment in place, Arena is an amazing option. HDC has benefitted immensely from Arena and has never looked back or second guessed our decision.

Pros

Cons

Arena is not for a church that isn't clear on what they want to do or that does not have IT staff. The best Arena implementations are ones where the church has a clear leader in charge of the project, and has solid direction from the staff of where they want to go. Having a developer on staff (or a volunteer) is not necessary, but makes arena even more customizable and flexible.

They are not responsive to issues and frustration we are having. Their apps are not very user friendly. Pricing is confusing.

Pros

The somewhat ease of transferring from a previous version of Shelby.

Cons

The church app is really weak. The calendar app is clunky and it is hard to get to a specific date.

After a year of implementing we went with another solution. The membership piece I am less than 50-50% on it and it could work if we had more staff, but the software required more attention that we could put towards it.

Pros

The church was able to add fields and sublists easily. You could also create unlimited groups.

Cons

You were able to order the fields and sublists, but compared to other software, similar price points, the GUI, graphical user interface, wasn't as clean to the volunteers that were entering info nor the members who would be "interfacing" with it. We had 30+ groups (baptized, confirmed, etc) but there was minimal reconciliation between the groups.

Expanded features such as full boolean search capability. We love the mobile app and the flexibility it provides.

Transition from v5. We have found it extremely difficult to find analogous features and reports from what we used in v5.

ShelbyNext for small churches is perfect

The support has always been outstanding -- every individual I've worked with is friendly and super helpful. And the crowdsourced support (online) gets good answers to your questions too. The software is easy to use -- only a few things I needed to train the secretary to use it effectively. The most complex part is maintaining groups using automated rules (like the church directory, or recent attenders, recent givers, etc.)

Pros

SaaS (hosted in the cloud), smart phone App available, easy to train church staff, strong functionality and great support

Cons

When we went live (I haven't had a chance to check lately) there were a few limitations: 1) the integration with ShelbyNext Financials for Giving, 2) user-friendliness/ease of doing sunday school check-in or congregation attendance, 3) cost of connecting with and using on-line giving service.

The cost is determined by membership. As a Baptist Church, our membership is determined differently than many other religions and we tend to have a higher number.

Online solution to membership issues

This is still a good software for the church wanting to connect with its members more frequently. We love the ability to track leadership encounters with our membership. Please seriously consider this application for you church or ministry tracking.

Pros

The speed of access to our membership information is a huge plus. We are able to connect our leadership to our members more frequently and track those interactions to improve responsiveness. Also the ability to have individuals track their giving is a motivation to increase their giving amounts.

Cons

I would love more class information than just attendance. To have more space for information about what is being discussed in the classes. Therefore, we have need of another software to track our discipleship.

Great for some, not for us!

We stopped using Shelby about 4 years ago as it was not meeting our needs as we grew as a church. It overall ended up not being a good fit for us. I'm sure it's evolved since then, however, we found quirks all over the place that didn't fit what we needed.

Pros

Shelby Membership helped us track all of our volunteers and church members. We could run reports and keep track of volunteer teams.

Cons

While we could run reports, we weren't able to get custom things that we needed to be able to track volunteers and schedule volunteers for serving. There were many other things that our staff got frustrated that Shelby couldn't do to help with day to day task that we needed. The overall look and use of Shelby wasn't super user friendly either.

Easy to keep track of people

I think that Shelby Next has helped to solve people from "falling through the cracks." I am thankful for any tool that helps us reach our community more effectively.

Pros

It's so simple to keep track of visitors, schedule visits with other staff members and follow up with people in the church.

Cons

I think it would be nice to be able to connect the service more with things like MailChimp, to not only sync emails, but also set up automated emails and tasks for first-time guests.

In general, I appreciate the software and the phone app that our church members are also able to use.

Pros

It is nice that we can look up information about church members easily. I like being able to print labels for envelopes really quickly and choose any people who need to be omitted. The very most useful part of the software for me has been being to send a text to all our choir and orchestra members from my computer.

Cons

There is a learning curve to using this software. I find that some reports are not intuitive to run and some reports are not customizable to my specific needs.

Better than v5 but has room for improvement. After our initial set up, support was non existent

Pros

Of the choices out there this was the best option for us because the financial piece was attached.

Cons

Had to create too many basic church membership criteria. Attendance input has some glitches and there’s is not a check out system for check in’s.(important for Children’s Ministry). Calendar has had glitches resulting in”disappearing rooms”

Addresses of church members quickly when I am away from the office and a good map interphase that helps me quickly find members' homes.

Pros

I find the app very easy to use and appreciate it's interface with other map programs. [It is interesting that I could not submit this survey because the comments in the "Pros" section is too short. I guess that's one way to hear what you want. I don't know what else you want me to say about your program: You use a nice font? It hasn't crashed yet?

Cons

What I like least about the Shelby products we have is the lack of training my staff received (and told they would get) plus the long wait my staff has to endure whenever they have issues with the Shelby Membership Program and the Shelby Financial Program and call for technical help. The time spent on hold is interminable. I suspect that there are just one or two people answering the phones. Last...

Pros

This is an easy to use software for tracking membership, attendance and giving for the church. It is used almost daily. It can be shared with members of the congregation if so desired.

Cons

I would prefer an ease of doing reports/directories that can be manually edited. The current form is PDF which is not the easiest to edit without purchasing additional software.

Pros

Organizing and communicate with my church members is easily done with ShelbyNext. Some of the most useful features that I use are reports, attendance, and mass communication. The ShelbyNext app is awesome tool, too.

Cons

Accessing the database via internet may become a challenge some times. That’s more of an internet provider issue which affects ShelbyNext. I’d love to see more available characters in the mass contact text messaging feature.

Great Product

Having the ability to access this program without being hardwired to the database has changed everything for us. And the apps make it easy to make changes quickly and easily on the fly. Overall we are so pleased with the capability of all the faucets and Shelby Next.

Pros

We have a big church and have thousands of congregants - Shelby has allowed us to create a more personal portfolio for each of them. It's hard to know them all individually - but shelby has helped us disciple to each of them on a level that meets them where they are - because we can in real-time track their attendance, giving, small groups, classes and their prayer requests. It's revolutionized our congregational care - among many other wonderful ways it's served our church.

Cons

I don't work with the financial part of the program - but I do know there were some crossover issues from the old Shelby that made the integration challenging. Although, once it was completed, it's worked seamlessly.

I am very satisfied with the rate of updates continually made on this product to improve the user experience.

Pros

If you are a Shelby user, currently using V5, you will love this newer version. The cloud based product is incomparable in ease of use. Our congregation loves having the church directory in an app.

Cons

The reporting is completely different from V5 and takes a while to get used to.

Our overall experience has been highly favorable.

Pros

Ease of use; our team has dramatically increased its use of the ShelbyNext Membership platform. Previously we were using Shelby v. 5 and most of our staff just went into the system to check addresses and phone numbers primarily. With the new system we have people engaged at all levels - ministry directors, ministry leaders, Pastors, etc. The ease of use if probably the single biggest factor.

Cons

More reporting features for data analysis. Would also like to have options for volunteer management - while we can set them up as groups, volunteer management is an integral part of what we do.

Great new Church Management System

I've had a great experience so far. Blackbaud's staff has been extremely helpful and eager to build the product. I am impressed with Blackbaud's communication and resources to deliver on their promises. I've been a part of their Early Adopter Program, and it has been a positive experience. They are thorough, organized and plan our their roll out phases well.

Pros

I am reviewing this product as it is being developed. I'm excited about Blackbaud's vision for the product and what has been accomplished so far. In terms of Church Management Systems, Blackbaud is attempting to deliver a broad scope of ministry-based tools via technology. I am pleased with what has been developed to date. It is intuitive and flexible. I like the look of the system and how to access church member and small group information. I believe it will be a powerful database for our church that will allow us to access information provide reporting that we have not had in the past. Our church staff and membership will have access to the system. It's slick, well designed.

Cons

It is too early to tell what I like least about the software. Many of the features are not available yet, but should be soon.
