The Ultimate Project Tracker  starstarstarstarstar  2015-09-18

When I needed a solution to keep track of really small personal projects without the need of overly complex applications and systems that required a great deal of time to setup and operate, I searched high and low for something that was as powerful as a kanban board and slightly more functional and effective than a simple to do list or stack of post-it notes. What I stumbled upon was Trello. And while I still use the free version of the application, I find it to be quite a powerful and easy to use tool that has provided me with extremely effective solutions. Trello is extremely easy to use. You can create multiple teams for either personal and/or business use. The teams can be private or shared with other team members. Within each team, a multitude of boards can be created, each with its own unique set of lists and then cards within each list. The hierarchy is well defined and functional to the point that Trello serves as anything from a sophisticated to do list through a project kanban board. If simplicity, function and value is what you are looking for, then Trello may very well be that solution. If you need more features and or capacity to store information, you can purchase Trello Gold or Trello Business levels for added power.

 Pros

Very easy to setup and use. Its hierarchy of teams, boards, lists and cards is well defined and very effective. It serves multiple purposes quite well and provides a lot of value to wherever it may be used. It's drag and drop capabilities are great, simplifying how cards are moved across the boards when working with a list.

 Cons

The application, though powerful, can use a tiny user interface revamping. It is not bad, really, just that you really need to take it through its paces to understand what it can and cannot do as well as where to achieve the functions you want. It is not as intuitive as one might think, but after using for a short time, the functions and features become second nature to its users.

Superb Team Collaboration  starstarstarstarstar  2015-09-18

In a world full of applications and tools to communicate, one of the biggest hurdle we were facing was communication. Despite a handful of tools available to us, we needed to consolidate and standardize with one simple and very powerful solution. Slack was that solution. With standard channels, custom private channels and peer-to-peer private messaging, Slack became the standard in our environment. It is so powerful and useful, that every single employee engages in daily communications across multiple channels for our communications... including remote team members.

 Pros

Easy to use and very powerful. We can attache images, documents, links and just about anything we need to get our work done and messages across. The application even has a mobile app that keeps us connected while away from our workstations at the office. The application provides search functionality as well and many other functions that have proven itself in our environment.

 Cons

We cannot find a con other than the inability to engage in multi-user conversations without having to create a private channel. Unlike some other communication tools where you can invite new users to a temporary conversation in real-time, Slack requires the creation of a private channel ahead of time. Then you can simply delete it. But since this is really the only con I can find at this time, the pros outweigh it by a mile.

JIRA Software Reviews

Project management solutions that work.  starstarstarstarstar  2015-07-28

As an avid Scrum Master I find that JIRA Agile provides an affordable and functional solution to managing Agile based projects. When I was first introduced to JIRA, I found it extremely challenging as I had just been using RallyDev for a few years prior. After failing to bring RallyDev or VersionOne on-board, I revisited JIRA with complete administrative access and realized that there is more under the hood than meets the eye. JIRA offers an amazing number of custom features to fit any project. Although it is being used in a strictly Scrum environment, I can see the potential for use in other Agile processes including Kanban and Scrumban. JIRA provides a detailed view of your projects from planning boards to active sprints, as well as managing releases and testing. JIRA also offers various metrics and custom dashboards with the ability to create filters for more detailed results.

 Pros

JIRA provides a high level of customization to views, workflow, screens, fields, boards and reports. Just about every portion of JIRA allows for custom changes to fit your project needs. Customization can be done a a global and/or project level. Security is also customized to allows for various group and user access.

 Cons

Because JIRA is truly based on Scrum, it follows the "all or nothing" rule where if any part of your story is incomplete at the end of the sprint, it must roll over to the next sprint. JIRA does not split stories.

High-level project resource management tool for modern teams

Bird's eye view of project budget.  starstarstarstarstar  2015-07-27

We recently switched our time tracking software with 10,000 Feet simply because it was able to replace numerous independent applications used internally to manage payroll and project budgets. 10,000 Feet provides a true bird's eye view of the enterprise allowing us to properly manage our project resources effectively. 10,000 Feet lets us view complete schedules, and allocate the necessary resources to the corresponding projects, pre-filing fields so that employees do not report time against incorrect projects inadvertently. It also provides real-time metrics to compare how you are billing against your projects: are you over or under budget. All this is effectively done with little or no effort. As a Scrum Master, 10,000 Feet has made my job of resource allocation and tracking extremely easy.

 Pros

10,000 Feet provides individual, project and enterprise view of resources, projects, time and budgets. Expenses are also managed and its reporting and filtering capabilities are extremely helpful. It has a high level of flexibility to keep accuracy with your project budgets.

 Cons

I would not say there is a con, only that it was so jammed packed with features that it took a little time to get used to it from what I was used to working with.

Projects Done Right!  starstarstarstarstar  2015-07-26

Prior to employing the use of Project Bubble to track all of my website projects, I reviewed, download and tested close to a dozen other comparable project management tools. Although my heart was set on a scrum-like tool, Project Bubble was the clear winner due to its functionality and value. Furthermore, it was simple enough for my clients to access and keep track of their status, without having to explain or train them in the process of an Agile-based process, which most are not familiar with. And because most of my projects were extremely short, Project Bubble offered the best user experience of all other tools I tried. Project Bubble is simple, while packing a great amount of functionality and value. It is a very powerful collaborative tool as well. Everything from tracking high level features and functions in my projects to tasking, sub-tasks, comments and file attachments... Project Bubble has it all. While many are now starting to actively seek applications designed around Agile methodologies like the popular Scrum and Kanban processes, I still recommend Project Bubble, despite its lack of Agile support. As a certified Scrum Master and Scrum Product Owner, as well as an avid Scrum enthusiast, I am still able to actively fulfill the delivery of projects using Project Bubble. I believe it is one application worth looking into as an affordable, highly functional, project management tool.

 Pros

Project Bubble is very intuitive and simple to use. It provides an exceptional collaboration platform for communicating with clients. Provides project status at a glance. Its reminder features are great for keeping projects on track.

 Cons

Prior to this review I had but one con. But since the introduction of their accompanying mobile app, which I had so desired for a while, I do not have a single con I can report about the application.
