Basecamp is great for basics, but needs a few additions

2018-03-09

Pros

I like how easy it is to use, especially for users that aren't very technical. Opening, dragging/dropping tasks is pretty simple.

Cons

We used to use this for the ticketing system at our company, and eventually we switched over to ActiveCollab. It was frustrating to have to put our initials before a task name for everyone to know who opened the item, and we couldn't label things for the status.

Very simple but functionality

Our works are become more controlled.

Pros

Look for inspiration on basecamp. Very fast and flexible.

Cons

Not enough features for bulk actions, for example, set group of tasks to another user, or change role. Cant' use my another role as default.

Almost great

Organization is great.

Pros

We replaced Basecamp with ActiveCollab.

Cons

The only complaint that I have is that the Authorize.net integration stopped working for me several months ago and the support to get it working again has been terrible. I've just moved invoicing to my website (which is a little annoying), but the rest of the tool is good.

More features than Basecamp and considerably cheaper

2018-02-09

Pros

Easy to use Updates are released on a frequent basis (and are a 1-click install) Requires little to no training You can create subtasks (unlike Basecamp) You can set a task start date as well as end date, and use a Gantt chart view of projects (unlike Basecamp) Can be installed on your own server

Cons

The mobile app is not yet fully featured and receives infrequent updates You can't preview most types of files yet (such as Word docs like Basecamp does) In the 'My Work' section, you can't yet filter by day/week/month like you can within the project pages

Used well, this is all you need to keep an eye on business

2018-02-10

Pros

I like the fact that everything is contextually linked, you can dive into a task from a calendar, report, email - anything really. As a manager it's great for checking workload and distributing tasks efficiently. I've been using ActiveCollab for a while now in different organisations, so much so I recommended we get the self-hosted version.

Cons

The inability to email direct to other modules like conversations and files unlike Basecamp which does allow it.

Been using Active Collaboration for a few years now after a switch from Basecamp. Never looked back!

2018-02-10

Pros

It is feature rich but without a crowded interface. Basecamp was working well too, but we were just missing the little extras.

ActiveCollab - Easiest for clients and tracking smaller projects

2017-12-29

Pros

(We didn't want a huge learning curve after switching from Basecamp).

Cons

Sub-tasks can't have any details attached to them at all, and you can't close out dupes easily (you can only mark them as duplicate, and I don't see how that's helpful). If you have tasks that are dependent or related, you can't batch them up.

Great task management application

2018-01-26

Pros

Activecollab are great, we were previously using 3 different Basecamp accounts for our sister companies.

Cons

Lack of built in customisation Email sending is limited in regards to daily reports etc Requires Elastic Search which is on another server/service, whilst not a huge deal it would have been nice to have a local native search and a high performance option using Elastic Search.

Great Alternative to Basecamp

2019-03-20

A great improvement over Basecamp which its capabilities were much more limited.

Pros

What we like most is the time tracking for projects and the ability for our clients to upload files to the project.

Cons

Would like a Slack like feature to be able to communicate without email.

I have been an advocate of Active Collab and I have been taking it with me with every new company

2018-02-09

It's a great contractor\agency tool. But you don't have to be an agency, its great for in-house too

Pros

Easy to use, affordable, logical, logical, really helps. The latest version has greate GUI and I have been using this tool for last 4 years. I first used it at Xivic, then took it with me to Get My Auto, Everything Online, Digital Advertier, and now my own consulting firm.

Cons

I wish it would connect to other project management tools such as basecamp, asana, etc.

Easy to use

2017-12-20

Pros

I have to say that Active Collab is a great alternative to people who have tried Basecamp in the past.

Cons

There's always a downside on a management platform, but with Active Collab I actually haven't found one. The apps are fast and easy to use, the system is easy to operate and the server requirements are pretty standard.

Great UX and combination of features/add-ons/api/management

2017-03-19

We migrated to Active Collab abount 2 months ago after attempting to work with Basecamp, Trello, and NutCache.

Pros

The combination of features, the API, the add-ons, permission management, project template creation, and UX.

Cons

We haven't found anything significant that we would improve about it so far.

This is allowing us to manage software, mobile, and web application development projects with team of developers which very mixed experience. The ability to create templates has been invaluable. Permission management, and client or client+ users has been really helpful. Tracking time and expenses, project goals, tasks, and deadlines has been invaluable. The platform is really well thought out and UX is WAY better than everything else we've tried. The mobile app could use some work but its on its way.

ActivCollab has been invaluable for our global team.

2018-02-09

Pros

We tried Asana and Basecamp before settling on ActivCollab due to the fact that its not overcomplicated and meets our needs.

Cons

It would be nice to be able to use emojis! We've experienced the occasional glitch but they usually get fixed quickly once we report them.

Best Collab Tool Out There

2017-01-07

Over the past 10 years I worked with several online project management, collaboration and accounting tools, including Basecamp, Harvest/Forecast, Freshbooks, Trello, Asana, Teamwork, Podio, Wrike, etc.

Pros

Covers almost everything you need for team workflow and managing (digital) project, nice UX, rich features, moderate price

Cons

Lacks a dashboard/cockpit, reports should be more flexible and easier to use, design of estimates and documents should be more flexible, billing options should be more flexible

Add a cockpit, a chat, and more ways to style the invoices/estimates and more/easier billing options, e.g. being able to invoice selected tasks with hours and expenses per task.

This is the Project Management tool you've been searching for!

2018-07-06

I've tried at least 20 different Project Management tools, but they were all either too expensive or simply not enjoyable to use. ActiveCollab saves me hours every week that I would normally spend searching for documents, keeping track of tasks, and double-checking things with clients. It also saved my sanity an email-based PM system is not mentally sustainable! I use it for work, and also for side-projects: learning new things, centralizing my store of ideas to ensure that they get implemented...the list of uses is endless.

Pros

ActiveCollab is far less expensive than BaseCamp and more visually appealing than the likes of Zoho or Trello.

Cons

The Mac app is still being worked on, and it has a few startup bugs, but works fantastically, otherwise.

Great Option for my Creative Business

2018-02-23

ActiveCollab keeps us organized and on task. It's a great snapshot of our client work at any given point. We have many moving parts, and ActiveCollab allows us to really stay on target with our goals and on task with our clients.

Pros

It's a great option without the price tag and disorganization the later versions that Basecamp brings.

Cons

We're finding the reports options are a little bit limited, however it hasn't been a huge issue. We're getting most of the data we need. We really wish we could assign tasks to multiple people, but that seems to be a common theme among these software options. I don't understand why as we have many tasks that are worked on by multiple people. This carries over into the time tracking app. If you aren't assigned a task, it won't show up in the time tracking app for you to track against. However the work around is you can add a time report in the desktop version after the fact to any task regardless of who it assigned to. The budget feature per project is nice, however, we wish we could break it down further by task list. Their great customer service has passed this along to the management and dev team for consideration so fingers crossed it will be coming in an update at some point.

A sleek yet powerful project management software way above its competition

2018-02-09

It helps me organize a great number of projects as one-man business without losing more time than necessary.

Pros

I think AC is great for freelancers and small project groups working remotely I switched from Basecamp and it was one of a relief.

Cons

I personally don't like the free limitations of users. I know there's a business model behind it but I hate to delete other clients/team members just to make room for someone else.
