Pros
The clients liked it because it was pretty easy to use.
Miva has impressive tech support, and includes features that Shopify requires monthly subscriptions for.
Miva includes very sophisticated software that doesn't require monthly subscriptions, and while the cost is still high, it is much lower than a shopify site.

There are a few good things about Americommerce. Their customer support staff is friendly.
It is user friendly and even a novice will be able to navigate while professional sellers will delight in the various options.
Cons
Shopify is deceptive because it advertises low monthly costs to host your business. These fees are just the tip of the iceberg though.
I just had a Shopify site developed, with the intention of switching platforms, and saving on the monthly fee that Miva charges.
In order to receive a lower cost subscription for Miva, I had to sign a 3 year contract.
Cons
No customization, primitive filtering, no DOWNLOADING, and the designs are horrendous. File management is a glorified FTP interface.
The orders were processed via a simple email script that would send the order to the office to be charged and filled.
Americommerce doesn't store entries on the site, so once it sends that admin email, the entry is gone forever. Ve been burned badly by this.
