Pros

Moodle is a great way to make learning for students fun and interactive! it is fun, colorful, and very engaging.
They offer incredibly detailed configuration options and the community is full of wonderful active people that are always there to help you if it's needed.
The overall experience using Moodle is good. It great to navigate even if your a first time user and is very effective in online teacher especially during this pandemic.

Pros

It has been good, and I would highly recommend it over the previous system we used. I like most of the newer features and believe it will continue to get better over time.
Canvas has a great overview page and is nice that all of your materials are in one place. I appreciated that it was the main form of communication, document location & even some quizzes and tests.
The overall experience during my last two years of undergraduate school was very pleasant and I sincerely hope that I encountered this software again in graduate school.

Cons

The overall experience was dull, heavy, and made everyone unhappy and struggling.
It is now a bulky applications with hell lots of features, it will take you around 2-3 months to properly go through every feature, no matter how fast you are.
Moodle can be difficult to find classes you are taking. I have had struggles signing into my class and finding them.

Cons

Nothing is intuitive, it's extremely hard to change or fix a mistake on an assignment if you make a mistake, grade syncing with our electronic gradebook is very glitchy.
The parent canvas app is confusing and difficult to navigate. It is hard to discern what assignments are due to strange naming structures.
As a parent, it was difficult to understand where some items were but I feel that was user error and not the platform.

Pros

I like that moodle provides an overall picture of the course and lets students and professor have different roles which dictate what they see.

Cons

We moved from moodle to canvas because of the number of features that Canvas offers.

I don't recommend Moodle

Reviewed 5 years ago

Neutral experience overall, while it allows me to add multiple courses on the same platform, the ease of import/export of data is not great in my opinion.

Pros

It allows me to organize multiple courses in the same place seamlessly. Allows multiple instructors for a course, and makes grading easier.

Cons

Organization is not good as canvas, and the one time I had problems, customer service wasn't super helpful. I recommend Canvas.

Not as good as Canvas

Reviewed 8 months ago
Pros

I used Moodle as a student and found it straightforward and easy to use. It had the essential functions needed for supporting online and in-person learning (eg turning in assignments, compiling the syllabus and important documents in one place, etc.).

Cons

I used both Moodle and Canvas as a student in school but prefer Canvas. The interface and website layout of Moodle was a bit clunky. Canvas was more intuitive and just had a fresher look.

Moodle

An alternative to Blackboard or Canvas

Reviewed 5 years ago

It works good at our institution and most students have good things to say about Moodle in general.

Pros

From what I understand, the operating costs of Moodle are far less than that of Blackboard or Canvas.

Cons

Canvas is easier to navigate and adjust settings. Moodle has a slight learning curve when compared that Canvas.

Pros

I used Moodle occasionally to submit course assignments online for undergraduate classes I took at UCLA. It was straightforward and secure.

Cons

Mulling Over Moodle

Reviewed 2 years ago

The experience we had, based on numerous comments from students and professors alike, was a very positive one. I am not sure why we switched to Canvas, maybe because Canvas is a simpler, less powerful system that could be learned more quickly.

Pros

Moodle provided our junior college campus with all the tools it needed to be successful in its mission. Approximately 5 years ago, however, a decision was made way over my head to switch to Canvas. Canvas provides many of the same features as Moodle, but what I miss about Moodle is the ability it gave instructors to modify and author their own content.

Cons

I think the user interface could have a more modernized look that would be more attractive to students, in particular, but other than that, there is very little that I dislike about Moodle.

Not bad for the price, but better LMS' out there

Reviewed 3 years ago

Does the job for the cost, but for critical infrastructure like a LMS I would spend more on Canvas or other platforms. Moodle has much lower market share too so if you have new teachers you will probably have to train them separately as well when Canvas users already know how to use the platform. Also I find the User Interface a bit antiquated.

Pros

The cost is very low relative to competitors, but you do get what you pay for. Outside of cost there are no product advantages like from a feature set perspective, ease of setup, maintenance, updates, etc. Canvas is much better on all those fronts.

Cons

Confusing to setup, not as robust as Canvas. Not as intuitive as other LMS', not as many regular updates.

Moodle is pretty good

Pros

Well, it’s free! You can’t say that about much in the education world. I’ve been using Moodle on and off for years for different higher education classes that I’ve taught as an adjunct, it does a pretty good job, and again, you can’t complain with free, and I love that you can really customize it to your hearts content depending on your coding ability.

Cons

It’s not the easiest to use software, canvas is much easier to use, but it cost a lot of money.

Moodle up the way

Reviewed 5 years ago

Overall experience with google is under satisfactory as compared to Blackboard and Canvas. It is the least help application I have ever used.

Pros

The software is an online education learning module software. It is mostly used by universities and other educational institutes. Overall the software is very decent, it offers a variety of features, plagiarism checker, and other variety of features. It does not have any option of predicting grade which is offered by Canvas. As a T.A. I would as it is a decent software but there are better softwares than moodle.

Cons

The software does not have a fully functional mobile appliation which is offered by Blackboard and Canvas which are other learning management systems. Moodle is also sluggish and courses appear later and from time to time there are bugs in the application.

Moodle review

Reviewed 5 years ago

I think because I'm familiar with other platforms like canvas which are more portable device friendly, it seems like it's a couple steps behind.

Pros

If professors are knowledgeable on how to set up their materials, it is easy to navigate. If not, then certain folders seem to be a catch all for everything they upload. But it's pretty starightforward, regardless how professors use it.

Cons

On the administrative side, editing the pages are hard to navigate through. There are a lot of criteria when creating an assignment for students to upload, some that are relevant and others that I still don't know what they are. If the page is ordered by weeks and I want to remove a particular week, it removes a week from the bottom of the page instead of the selected week. When I figured out what happened, I had to rename every week to reorganize everything. Also, the iPad capability is limited. When I click on certain links, it tells me that I need to open it in the browser, which opens up the Moodle page and I have to login and start from scratch which is a bit annoying because then I could have just started on the browser instead. Lastly, there's no place to take attendance.

Because it's open source and has a lot of customizations it's not as simple to implement and upgrade compared to a stand alone product like Canvas.

Pros

Ive used this software for about 2.5 years before our campus was switched over to Canvas. This site was easy to use and I could find assignments easily.

Cons

The layout of this website was a little busy for me. It would have been nice to have a list of upcoming assignments or class notifications on the sidebar.

Moodle

Great educational tool

Reviewed 5 years ago

Overall, I do think that there are many comparable tools other than Moodle that provide a similar experience (Blackboard, Canvas), but my experience with Moodle has been good.

Pros

Moodle and has many helpful features for instructors. As a course designer, I like being able to see what parts of the course are being accessed, so I can better design my courses in the future. I also appreciate being able to give feedback and corrections on the site as well (after students electronically submit their work), which creates a more seamless experience.

Cons

I'm fairly computer-savvy so I didn't have the most difficult time getting set up, but I imagine that others could struggle to learn all of the features of Moodle and not take advantage of them. It would be great to have a more extensive built-in tutorial that users can access based on the way they will be using the program.

CANVAS

A great LMS.

Reviewed 5 years ago

Canvas has made communication with students much easier. I can access messages/emails within Canvas and I can also manage them within my email client as well. Adding documents, notes, etc. is a breeze.

Pros

I use this LMS at a college where I am a part time instructor. I use Moodle at another college I teach at full time. The learning curve for Canvas is far less as compared to Moodle. It is easier to use.

Cons

I imagine this LMS is much more expensive as compared to Moodle so you need to weigh that into your decision just in case you were choosing between Moodle and Canvas.

Ease of Use

Ease of use when importing content from Blackboard and Moodle learning management platforms.

Pros

Ability to import content from existing learning management systems, such as Blackboard and Moodle is a very nice feature. Allows seamless integration between other platforms without too much editing after import.

Cons

As with all new software platforms, it will take some time to learn how to use features but is not overly complicated.

This was a replacement to using Moodle. What an upgrade!

Reviewed 5 years ago

I used it in college and it was a very welcome upgrade from Moodle

Pros

I loved everything about this software. The calendar and announcement features were fantastic as well as the communication interface.

Cons

Nothing. It did everything it needed to and was a replacement to Moodle which was horrible.

Appreciate the exposure to the application. Somewhat of an improvement.

Pros

Somewhat operates as a n extension to the likes of Moodle, better interface in terms of engaging the user.

Cons

Hard to locate and uploading documents for user on other end. I.E if a professor was to upload, its hard to find on student end.

Love using Canvas!

Love using Canvas! Makes submitting assignments so easy.

Pros

So easy to use! We went from Moodle to Canvas and it was the best day ever! Unlike Moodle, Canvas always works. I have yet to have a problem submitting an assignment or seeing posts from professors. It's always running well and never slow. Can't say enough good about Canvas!

Cons

I have yet to have problems working with Canvas! It's seriously worth the money. The free programs are not worth the money saved when you can have something as awesome as this!

A versatile and reliable data-driven LMS

Reviewed 23 days ago

I have used Moodle, Blackboard, and other LMS over the years. Canvas is the most stable and user-friendly

Pros

The ability to make changes and see them across the board on all courses of the same type in the system is a strong ability in Canvas. The tools and support in the admin panel are extensive.

Cons

Moving from Canvas to an embedded program is clunky and not user-friendly

Student Use

Has created an easily used environment for my school classes. In my opinion, easier to use than Blackboard or Moodle.

Pros

It makes seeing what you still have due coming up and allows you to easily change throughout your courses and units/modules.

Cons

The phone application is very limited and only allows certain functions of what you get when using the computer software.

Canvas as a student user

Reviewed 5 years ago

Compared to Moodle, I like Canvas much better. It is very much focused and geared towards enhancing the student's learning experience.

Pros

I have been using canvas regularly for all my graduate classes. It has been the epicenter/hub for the instructor and all other students to come together and create a intuitive learning environment. Things I really like with canvas: - Discussions and Help Forums It's so easy to post questions in canvas and ask the professor and other students for help or clarifications. my graduate classes are pretty...

Cons

Canvas is not perfect though if you are not an expert user or instructor. - Many times instructors said the contents are released but it wasn't - The grades accumulation does not always makes sense - Very much dependent on how the instructor has laid out contents. - Redundant information - Not always user friendly. Does take a while to get adjusted to it
