What is Wireshark?
Wireshark is a network monitoring software designed to help commercial enterprises, non-profit organizations, government agencies, and educational institutions capture and analyze network traffic across various communication channels. It allows IT teams to automatically read live data from various types of networks such as ethernet, token ring, loopback, ATM connections, and more.
It enables IT professionals to capture packet data from a live network and analyze packets from captured files via a graphical user interface (GUI). Wireshark lets users modify captured files using command-line switches, filter data based on business requirements, and create plug-ins for analyzing new protocols. Software developers can utilize an integrated modeline generator to create and add modelines in files and configure indentation in real-time.
Wireshark enables network security engineers to examine and resolve security issues, troubleshoot network problems, and detect errors in protocol implementations. Other features include data encryption, a drag-and-drop interface, analytics, compliance management, alerts, server monitoring, data import/export, and more.
