Boxy overview

What is Boxy?

Boxy is an AI coding assistant embedded within the CodeSandbox cloud development environment, accessible via a browser-based editor or the CodeSandbox VS Code extension with no local installation required. It operates with full-project context awareness, enabling code generation, refactoring, review, annotation, and explanation directly within the editor. Automated generation of commit messages and PR titles and descriptions based on branch diffs and commit history reduces manual documentation overhead. Target users span individual developers on Free and Pro plans, collaborative teams of up to 20 in Pro workspaces, and enterprise users across software development, web development, open source, and developer education.

Core interaction is handled through a dedicated AI chat DevTool that automatically classifies user input as a question, a code generation prompt, or a refactor prompt. Generated code includes clickable file paths for direct insertion into the project. Refactoring can be triggered from the app preview UI without manually locating code in the editor. Inline AI autocomplete, powered by a Codeium integration, supports 70+ programming languages with single- and multi-line suggestions. Chat and assistant features are powered by GPT-4.

Boxy's project-wide context distinguishes it from external AI chat tools that lack visibility into the full codebase. Opt-in AI permissions give users control over whether AI accesses their code, and private code is never used to train generative models per Codeium policy. Bug identification and security suggestions are surfaced during code review and annotation, making the tool relevant to developers at all experience levels.
