What is ChatWithPDF?
ChatWithPDF is a cloud-based ChatGPT plugin that enables conversational querying of PDF documents without manual reading. Installed directly through the ChatGPT Plugin Store, it requires a ChatGPT Pro subscription with GPT-4 and Plugins enabled. Users supply a publicly accessible PDF URL or Google Drive link; the plugin downloads and processes the document, then returns relevant extracted passages in response to natural-language queries. No separate application or interface is required beyond the ChatGPT UI.
Document processing relies on vector embeddings, which are indexed and stored using ChromaDB on the deployment server at chatwithpdf.sdan.io. Queries are semantically matched against these embeddings to retrieve the most contextually relevant sections of the loaded document. Two API endpoints handle the core workflow: one for loading a PDF and one for querying it. Once a document is loaded, it can be re-queried multiple times within a session without re-specifying the source. Embeddings are purged every 12 to 24 hours, and no permanent data storage is maintained.
ChatWithPDF targets ChatGPT Pro users across a broad range of use cases, including students, researchers, and professionals who need to extract information from PDF documents efficiently. It supports documents hosted on public URLs or third-party file hosting services in addition to Google Drive, broadening compatibility without requiring local file uploads. The plugin reached 6.5 million views and was recognized as the number one ChatGPT plugin, reflecting wide adoption among the ChatGPT user base.
