Gaia overview

What is Gaia?

GaiaNet is a decentralized computing infrastructure platform that enables individuals, developers, and enterprises to create, deploy, scale, and monetize AI agents across an open mesh of independently operated nodes. Unlike centralized AI platforms, GaiaNet distributes inference workloads across over 700,000 active nodes globally, eliminating single points of failure, rate limits, and dependency on centralized cloud accounts. Each node ships with a high-performance cross-platform runtime, a fine-tuned large language model (LLM), a knowledge embedding model, a vector database, a prompt manager, an OpenAI-compatible API server, and a plugin system for calling external tools and functions. Nodes can be grouped into Gaia Domains under a single public URL for load balancing and service reliability, with domain operators managing node admission, performance monitoring, and API pricing. On-chain governance is handled via a DAO structure with a native token (GAIA) used for staking, governance, and payments, while transactions are processed through Purpose Bound Money smart contracts using stablecoins.

GaiaNet targets a broad range of verticals including education, finance, healthcare, customer service, supply chain and logistics, legal, manufacturing, and Web3 and decentralized finance. The developer stack includes a CLI, agent deployment tools, and public Gaia Domains that function as ready-made LLM endpoints compatible with LangChain, Postman, and IDE plugins. LLM inference capabilities span text generation, code generation, sentiment analysis, text classification, named entity recognition, and dialog systems, with planned expansion to speech-to-text and video generation. All open-source LLMs in GGUF format are supported, and per-node fine-tuning with custom knowledge bases allows domain-specific response quality that generic centralized models cannot replicate. Deployment options include self-hosted nodes on CPU or GPU hardware (minimum 8GB RAM), access via OpenAI-compatible public domain APIs, and on-device mobile inference through the Gaia AI Phone, built on Galaxy S25 Edge hardware for fully offline, data-sovereign AI use.
