GraphPilot overview

What is GraphPilot?

GraphPilot UG is a cloud-based, GraphQL-native edge proxy written in Rust that sits in front of an existing GraphQL API to handle caching, security, and performance optimization at the network edge. Deployed across a global edge network (currently on Fastly), it reads the GraphQL schema directly to determine which queries to cache, how long to retain them, and which cache entries to invalidate when a mutation changes underlying data. Schema changes automatically carry updated edge behavior, cache TTLs, authorization rules, and invalidation keys in the same pull request, eliminating separate cache key maintenance and purge scripts. Sovereign EU cloud deployments on Telekom Cloud, StackIT, and IONOS are planned, with GDPR-native infrastructure, German jurisdiction, and EUR pricing across four tiers from 0 to 249 EUR.

GraphPilot UG addresses the full edge lifecycle for GraphQL APIs through five capability areas. Edge Cache serves repeated reads from the nearest point of presence, targeting sub-50ms response times, with schema-aware invalidation after writes, empty-result caching, automatic cache tag derivation from the schema, and selection set expansion that injects cache-key fields upstream and strips them before the response reaches the client. Edge Optimization covers request collapsing (collapsing duplicate concurrent queries into a single upstream call), persisted operations (clients send a short hash instead of full query text), GET-cacheable reads, Brotli compression, and HTTP/3 over QUIC. Origin Shielding routes global cache misses through a single shield node to reduce redundant origin traffic. Edge Security provides GraphQL-aware abuse protection, blocking dangerous query shapes, schema probing, and abusive mutation loops before they reach the origin, with auth policies, rate limits, and operation controls declared as directives directly on schema fields. Insights delivers operation-level traffic, cache health, security activity, and edge geography data without requiring SDKs or log shipping.

Configuration is entirely schema-driven: caching, authorization, rate limits, and invalidation are declared as directives on schema fields and versioned in the same repository as the schema, keeping policy visible to every team without separate documentation. Each tenant runs on a dedicated per-tenant WASM binary compiled from Rust in an isolated runtime, not a shared multi-tenant environment. GraphPilot UG is compatible with Apollo Federation cache hints and HTTP cache-control headers, extends existing schemas rather than replacing them, and requires no client SDK changes, no special headers, and no per-client tuning. Coverage extends beyond GraphQL to REST and any HTTP traffic.
