LowRouter overview

What is LowRouter?

LowRouter is a cloud-based, OpenAI-compatible API gateway that sits between an application and multiple LLM providers, routing requests to the provider, model, and region of the user's choice. Compatible with existing OpenAI SDKs, LangChain, LiteLLM, and AI coding agents (Claude Code, Cursor, Aider, Cline, Goose, OpenCode) via a single base URL change to api.lowrouter.ai/v1, with no SDK modifications, plugins, or proprietary protocol changes required. Every API response includes a carbon and cost receipt, covering provider, region, gCO2eq emitted, and grid carbon intensity, sourced from open public grid data and a published inference energy methodology. LowRouter does not run models, retain prompts, transform requests, or train on user data.

LowRouter consolidates access to providers including Anthropic, OpenAI, Mistral, Scaleway, Groq, and AWS Bedrock under a single API key and unified balance, replacing separate accounts and invoices per provider with one EU VAT-compliant invoice. Token usage is billed at the upstream provider's per-token price in EUR with no per-token markup; fees apply only at credit top-up. There is no monthly commitment and no per-seat charge. Auto-routing selects routes by ranked policy: EU-sovereign providers first, then lowest grid carbon intensity, then lowest price. Jurisdiction-scoped routing IDs and per-key model and region allowlists give engineering teams precise control over which providers and regions are eligible for each request. The Anthropic Messages API endpoint (/v1/messages) is supported natively for Claude Code and Anthropic SDK users.

Hosted in France and operated within EU jurisdiction, LowRouter is GDPR-native and outside CLOUD Act reach. Keys, billing data, and usage metadata remain in EU jurisdiction. The dashboard provides a per-request breakdown of tokens in/out, upstream cost, and gCO2eq per model and provider, exportable as CSV, supporting auditable ESG and Scope 3 carbon reporting from the same data source used for financial records. Carbon budget policies can be set per API key, and any missing carbon data is reported as unknown rather than estimated, preserving traceability. Switching away from LowRouter requires only changing the base URL back to the provider directly, with no lock-in.
