Maestro overview

What is Maestro?

Maestro is an open-source, end-to-end UI testing framework for mobile and web applications, available as a free CLI, a desktop app (Maestro Studio), and a hosted parallel execution service (Maestro Cloud). Tests are authored as human-readable YAML files called Flows that simulate real user interactions at the device level through the operating system accessibility layer. A single Flow file runs unchanged across Android, iOS, and web targets with no recompilation required, enabling immediate execution after authoring. Maestro Studio provides a visual element inspector, contextual autocomplete, and a no-code flow builder, lowering the barrier for non-technical QA and manual testers. An integrated AI assistant (MaestroGPT) generates YAML test commands from natural language input. AI commands including assertWithAI, assertNoDefectsWithAI, and the --analyze Insights Report flag are routed through Maestro Cloud infrastructure with no external API key required.

Maestro Cloud provides hosted device infrastructure for parallel test sharding across multiple devices and browsers, reducing full suite runtimes from hours to minutes. Deterministic cloud infrastructure and built-in UI instability tolerance (automatic waits, retry on element shift, no manual sleep() calls) eliminate brittle tests and false failures from unreliable simulators. Step-by-step video playback, detailed logs, flake detection, and JUnit/HTML report output support post-run analysis. Result notifications route to GitHub pull requests, Slack, or email via webhooks. CI/CD integrations cover GitHub Actions, Bitrise, CircleCI, and Bitbucket Pipelines.

Maestro targets software development and QA teams of all sizes across mobile app development and software quality assurance, from individual developers using the free CLI to enterprise teams scaling on Maestro Cloud. The framework is trusted by engineering teams at Microsoft, Amazon, Meta, and DoorDash. A Maestro MCP server implements the Model Context Protocol, exposing live device screen hierarchy, screenshot capture, flow execution, and cloud submission to AI coding agents including Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, GitHub Copilot, Gemini, Windsurf, JetBrains AI Assistant, and Grok Build. Maestro Viewer, a companion web app embedded inside AI coding agents, displays live device state and MCP commands in real time.
