OpenTelemetry overview

What is OpenTelemetry?

OpenTelemetry is a vendor-neutral, open-source observability framework backed by the CNCF and major cloud providers. It provides a unified set of APIs, SDKs, automatic instrumentation agents, and a Collector service for generating, collecting, and exporting telemetry data — traces, metrics, and logs — across distributed, cloud-native, and microservices-based applications. Language-native SDKs cover 12+ languages including Java, Python, Go, JavaScript, .NET, Ruby, PHP, Rust, C++, Swift, Kotlin, and Erlang. Deployment options span on-premises, hybrid, and multi-cloud environments, with Kubernetes support via the OpenTelemetry Operator and Helm charts. No cloud account or proprietary vendor backend is required.

The OpenTelemetry Collector is a single binary deployable as a sidecar agent or standalone gateway. It receives, processes, filters, routes, and exports telemetry at scale using 200+ components, and supports export via the OpenTelemetry Protocol (OTLP) to any compatible backend including Jaeger, Prometheus, Zipkin, and commercial observability vendors. Distributed context propagation correlates traces across service boundaries and connects logs, metrics, and traces into a unified view. Semantic conventions standardize telemetry data structure across platforms and languages, and a continuous profiling signal via eBPF is available in public alpha.

OpenTelemetry also addresses AI and LLM observability through Semantic Conventions for Generative AI, which standardize how LLM operations — model name, token counts, prompt content, tool calls, and tool results — are recorded. Instrumentation libraries automate telemetry collection for LLM API calls, and GenAI metrics cover call latency, token consumption, and per-request cost estimation. AI agent observability standards are under active development for frameworks including LangGraph, CrewAI, AutoGen, and Semantic Kernel. Used in production by thousands of organizations across all industry verticals, including large enterprises such as Adobe, OpenTelemetry is governed transparently under the CNCF with stable, backwards-compatible APIs.
