Our commitment
Independent research methodology
Our researchers use a mix of verified reviews, independent research, and objective methodologies to bring you selection and ranking information you can trust. While we may earn a referral fee when you visit a provider through our links or speak to an advisor, this has no influence on our research or methodology.
Verified user reviews
GetApp maintains a proprietary database of millions of in-depth, verified user reviews across thousands of products in hundreds of software categories. Our data scientists apply advanced modeling techniques to identify key insights about products based on those reviews. We may also share aggregated ratings and select excerpts from those reviews throughout our site.
Our human moderators verify that reviewers are real people and that reviews are authentic. They use leading tech to analyze text quality and to detect plagiarism and generative AI.
How GetApp ensures transparency
GetApp lists all providers across its website—not just those that pay us—so that users can make informed purchase decisions. GetApp is free for users. Software providers pay us for sponsored profiles to receive web traffic and sales opportunities. Sponsored profiles include a link-out icon that takes users to the provider’s website.

PDMShell overview
What is PDMShell?
PDMShell is a Windows desktop scripting and automation platform for SOLIDWORKS PDM Professional, designed as a modern alternative to Dispatch. It provides a command-line interface and a reusable .pdmshell script engine that covers vault navigation, file check-in and check-out, rename, move, copy, delete, recovery, bulk metadata read/write, revision mapping, BOM access, and workflow transition automation. A visual workflow editor allows administrators to build and validate scripts on a canvas before deployment. A PDM add-in (.cex) extends automation into PDM menus, tasks, and event trigger points including checkout, check-in, state change, add, delete, move, copy, rename, and folder events, without requiring separate PDM Task configurations.
PDMShell targets CAD administrators, PDM vault administrators, data managers, and engineering teams across manufacturing sectors including industrial equipment, packaging systems, and general manufacturing. It supports large-scale data migrations driven by CSV input for bulk rename, re-pathing, variable updates, revision mapping, and workflow transitions. Permission and condition controls restrict script execution to specific PDM users or groups, and scripts can run on demand or on a schedule. The platform is distributed as a standalone Windows installer, as a Microsoft Store application, and via Microsoft-hosted download links that support air-gapped and restricted environments. Licensing is seat-based with per-machine or pooled vault activation managed through the PDM Administration Tool. Two editions are available: Free, which covers evaluation and lightweight use with a 5-item search limit and 5-line scripts, and Premium, which removes scripting limits and adds workflow integration, the PDM add-in, and priority support.
PDMShell also includes a version-matched MCP (Model Context Protocol) server that integrates with Claude Desktop and OpenAI Codex. The MCP server exposes available PDMShell commands, parameter definitions, and search expressions to connected AI clients, allowing natural language-driven execution of approved vault operations through the local SOLIDWORKS PDM environment. The MCP server is installed, signed, and updated alongside PDMShell, uses the existing local machine license, and exposes version information without requiring a vault login.
