Our commitment
Independent research methodology
Our researchers use a mix of verified reviews, independent research, and objective methodologies to bring you selection and ranking information you can trust. While we may earn a referral fee when you visit a provider through our links or speak to an advisor, this has no influence on our research or methodology.
Verified user reviews
GetApp maintains a proprietary database of millions of in-depth, verified user reviews across thousands of products in hundreds of software categories. Our data scientists apply advanced modeling techniques to identify key insights about products based on those reviews. We may also share aggregated ratings and select excerpts from those reviews throughout our site.
Our human moderators verify that reviewers are real people and that reviews are authentic. They use leading tech to analyze text quality and to detect plagiarism and generative AI.
How GetApp ensures transparency
GetApp lists all providers across its website—not just those that pay us—so that users can make informed purchase decisions. GetApp is free for users. Software providers pay us for sponsored profiles to receive web traffic and sales opportunities. Sponsored profiles include a link-out icon that takes users to the provider’s website.

PCB Design overview
What is PCB Design?
Proteus Design Suite is an integrated electronic design automation (EDA) tool for printed circuit board design, developed in the UK by Labcenter Electronics since 1988. It combines schematic capture, PCB layout, and simulation in a single environment, and is used by independent design engineers, hardware consultancies, electronics manufacturers, and higher education institutions internationally.
The schematic capture module provides a hierarchical multi-sheet design environment with electrical rule checking, direct import of over 15 million parts via integrated web component vendors, and a formal managed-library system for organisation-wide component governance.
The PCB layout module offers polygonal power planes, shape based autorouting, scalable and hierarchical design rule checking, and high-speed design features including differential pair routing, length matching, and net tuning. An integrated 3D viewer provides board visualisation with STEP and IGES export for mechanical CAD handover, and manufacturing output covers Gerber X2, ODB++, and IDF formats.
A dedicated Project Notes module provides reporting and auditing across nets, length matching, differential pairs, manufacturing, and component placement. ProPilot,
Labcenter's emerging AI capability, acts as a design assistant and generates component library parts directly from datasheet screenshots, placing Proteus among the early movers in AI integration with mainstream EDA.
In addition to mainstream professional PCB design, Proteus includes both mixed-mode and embedded simulation tools. Mixed-mode SPICE simulation covers analogue, digital, and mixed-signal analysis with over a dozen graph analysis types and interactive instruments including oscilloscope, logic analyser, and signal generator. Virtual System Modelling (VSM) co-simulates microcontroller firmware running on a virtual device alongside the surrounding analogue and digital circuitry, with supported families including Arduino, PIC, AVR, ARM Cortex-M, STM32, MicroPython-based ESP32, and Raspberry Pi. Peripheral models cover keypads, TFT displays, sensors, motors, and communications bus controllers (SPI, I²C, USB, UART).
Proteus is typically sold under a perpetual licence. For single users and smaller commercial teams (typically up to five users), licensing is local to each machine via a licence key, optionally coupled with a USB hardware dongle in higher-piracy territories. For larger multi-user deployments such as educational labs and enterprise teams, server-based floating licensing options are available, including LAN, WAN-distributed for full campus coverage, and a fully managed Cloud Licence Server hosted by Labcenter. Where these use a network connection, it is for licence verification only; design files remain on the user's local machine.
An optional annual maintenance contract provides software updates and technical assistance for a modest fee. If not renewed, the software is simply frozen at the last valid build and continues to be used in perpetuity at that version. Multi-year maintenance can be purchased in advance at the current price.
Primary technical support is provided directly from the UK head office by the development team, backed by a network of expert international distributors offering local-language and local-timezone support.
