Borehole overview

What is Borehole?

Borehole is a technical due diligence tool that analyzes software repositories to produce structured diligence reports for M&A deal teams, investment banks, private equity firms, and corporate development groups. It accepts repository URLs from GitHub, GitLab, Azure DevOps, Bitbucket, Codeberg, Gitea, and SourceHut, and runs 106 automated checks across seven dimensions: Architecture and Codebase (including AI provenance), Engineering Process and SDLC Maturity, Product and Engineering Maturity, Security and Reliability Posture, Observability and Operations, and Fit with the Acquirer. Every finding cites its specific evidence — the commit, file path, and line number it rests on — or documents what was looked for when something is absent.

Public repositories require no local installation and are analyzed directly via URL at no cost. For private repositories, a local collector runs on the user's machine and transmits only facts and short excerpts (up to 120 characters); whole files are never sent. This architecture keeps sensitive source code off external infrastructure. Checks span licence compliance, security advisories, release cadence, code review practice, test coverage, dependency health, and operational posture. Reports also generate deal-team questions for areas the code alone cannot resolve.

Borehole serves both sides of a transaction. Sell-side teams use it to surface code-level issues before a buyer's diligence team does, while remediation is still possible and before those issues affect valuation. Buy-side teams use it as a low-cost first read across every target in a pipeline, prioritizing where to commit expensive diligence resources and identifying the right questions to open with. A free tier is available for public repositories.
